Sarah Palin could be the next Oprah.

That's what reality-show maestro Mark Burnett thought, but Sarah said no.
Burnett has insisted that Palin do the show from either New York or Los Angeles, which would require her to move for a significant portion of the year from her residence in Alaska where she lives with husband Todd.
Whether that was really the basis for the no or not, it's great PR. She's devoted to Alaska and her husband Todd. That's the kind of thing that gives women — some women — chills of feeling, I say — experiencing this bodily chills, even as I'm am typing out the skepticism toward PR that reigns over my rational mind.

I wish she'd be an Oprah. If lots of women are going to watch those shows, I wish one were available with a different perspective.

Holistic "medicine". That sounds a lot like "Washington Ethics".

Ask Steve Jobs how all that cleansing crystal BS worked out.

People believe that crap simply because if they try it on 100 people odds are it will "work" on a small percentage of them (e.g., those who were never going to get the illness).

Gullibility cannot be overestimated.

MadisonMan ayon kay ...

I suppose it would be hard to get people to fly up to Alaska for guest stints.

My favorite sneaky politician story is when our old senator was a representative she stepped down 'to stay home with her twins' and two ish years later she was running for Senate.

I think you're making a bit too much of this one, though. She may be holding out for more control or a better offer or she may just like Alaska, but those considerations are probably weighing higher than some imaginary chills she is trying to create. The people who love her already love her. They don't need any convincing. The rest probably won't be convinced by anything.

Sell your soul by takung the money and running or staying true to yourself and a great place/home. I had a chance to take a college teaching job with a tenure track in Nebraska 35 years ago. I turned it down to stay on the beach with my surfboard (and girls who basically ran around in less than their underwear most of the year), sailboat and great lifestyle. You have to be true to your heart's desire. As the Aussies say, "Good on ya' Shelia (Sarah)".

Maybe that talk about a Senate run is more than talk.

That's the real point.

Besides, the sticking point was shooting the show in LA or Gotham. The piece on Newsmax said another, less Lefty venue would have been preferred.

I can't believe she would have had to spend that much time in the lower 48. A week's worth of shows a day and how many weeks of new shows?

That sounds like post Bob Dylan's stress reaction.

Do you find yourself humming, "If you're traveling in the North country fair where the winds hit heavy on the borderline, remember me to one who lives there. For she once was a true love of mine."

Sarah's theme, like Lara's theme, has lots of very cold winter in it.

One wonders what they will do with Rand Paul.

She won't be pushed into "women's TV"... not when men are a huge percentage of her supporters.

I think many people overlook the irony of this fact. We are constantly told how men fear or dislike empowered women yet Palin is widely admired by men and largely loathed by women.

The real truth is that men do admire strong, bright women whereas women, despite their so called sisterhood, can't stand Palin for no other reason than her popularity.

That's why I never take feminism seriously. For all its talk of female solidarity and empowerment, they can turn on each other like rats on a sinking ship over petty jealosies.

so people say 'men like her' and that's okay, but people say 'women don't like her' and that's a problem?

LOL.

A lot of women I know don't like her because she's attractive and their husbands like her.

One of my best friends is allowed to mention various show biz type women he finds attractive, but he's not allowed to mention Palin.

It's comical.

Colonel Angus ayon kay ...

Or maybe you meant a certain subset of women rather than all of them.

In my previous paragraph I said women largely loathed her so call it a large subset. I'm sure Palin has her female admirers but I will wager its a minority.

But I'll stand on my opinion that women tend toward hostility towards other women based upon petty jealousies. For example if two women show up at a party wearing the same outfit, rest assured there will be catty gossip over who looks better. If its two guys, they'll likely become friends for life.

If you're going to make crazy money, why not live in California? It's beautiful.

My hubby and I were remarking on the beauty of California this weekend last as we were driving through miles of walnut, orange, olive and almond orchards on our way home to the still snow capped mountains where the wild flowers are just beginning to bloom. We could see the remains of homes built in the 1900's and earlier that lasted until the last few years as homes of working farmers, retired and people who want to leave the cities. Some were next to the NEW larger homes. Others were just abandoned, boarded up, looted or decaying; the evidence of the dying dreams and ambitions of the "Okies" and earlier pioneers.

Our comment was....."Isn't California beautiful? Too bad it is full of crazy moronic liberals bent on destroying it." THIS is the downside of California. You are surrounded by liberal loons who control your life.

I agree with Prairie Wind. Palin would not want to be a "women's TV" host and the vapid daytime audience of clueless Obamabot types women would not be attracted to her.

That came out wrong. I mean, she's not eating her Gayle King (that would be cannibalism), but just eating in general.

She could 'eat' her Gayle King, which I'm sure would titillate some of the crowd here indeed, and generate some sweet ratings.

Titillates.

No, the problem is marking all women as full of petty jealousies and comparing them to rats.

Guests aren't the problem - the live studio audience is.

In a big tourist city, it's pretty easy to keep an outside group from stacking your audience.

In AK, Moveon can charter a couple of buses from Seattle and stack the live audience.

Colonel Angus ayon kay ...

I'll go under the assumption you have a small circle of female friends. ;-)

Also I don't 'hang out' with women. I have one at home and that's enough.

One of my freshman roommates did it on a motorcycle. Other folks do it.

And, there's also the alaska marine highway http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/

Bottom line - it's fairly cheap to get 1-200 people to alaska as one might expect from a tourist destination....

Why bother to make crazy money if most of it is going to be taxed away from you? Besides, California's beauty is overrated.

I like Palin! Just not as VP of the USA. I watched that episode with the Mom of those sextuplets, when they were out in the feild with her and her kids. It was very amusing to see how Sarah handled this woman's incessant complaints. She's good as a reality star, she may have been really good as a talk show host.

PianoLessons ayon kay ...

I don't know Althouse - when in grad school in Chicago (2004), we went to see "Taming of the Shrew" at Navy Pier Shakepeare theater and 15 of 20 in the class (all women) walked out before Kate gave her "We should support our men" speech in Act 5.

BTW - this play - along with "Merchant of Venice" - have been silently censored in 9-16 education.

Some women can not stand the idea of "stand by your man" and think it means they should stay home baking cookies - ya know?

The irony of Clinton and Obama is that they are both propped up by amazing, strong women who "stand by them" through thick or thin. UGH.

Andy Freeman ayon kay ...

I forgot to mention that said motorcycle was also carrying everything he needed for for his freshman year. (His parents didn't think that there were stores in CA.)

Mapquest: Seattle to Anchorage. 43 hours + driving time. Not counting stopping to pee, poop, eat, sleep. 2356 miles. Would take about a week. Yep...everyone does this.

And Move On will pack buses full of libtards to stack the audience of a Palin talk show. All I can say is those are some REAL dedicated people.

"The Tea Party Leadership Fund, the group that commissioned the poll, has been pushing to try to draft Palin to run for Senate. The group’s chief spokesman Niger Innis said this poll’s results show “Alaskans have made understood there is only one potential candidate for the U.S. Senate that will stand up and fight for their state and our nation against the bullying and tyranny of a Harry Reid-led Senate, and that's Sarah Palin.”
“The only question that the poll didn't answer is will Sarah Palin listen to Alaskans and answer the call to run?" Innis said.
