I got no flower skills. Although I pissed off a woman with flowers once. No, wait, two women. Inappropriate flower giving. It's my secret shame.

Here's Jon Stewart to cheer us up.

I think I got what the Germans call schadenfreude.

Not quite the correct flower for the poem, but Happy Memorial Day to all.

LTC John McCrae (1872-1918)

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Although I don't think it proper to wish people a happy Memorial Day, my condolences to all the Althousians who have lost friends or relatives in the service of their country and to wish the others a smile in whatever their plans.

Oops, not a café post, my bad.

Now I feel like Obama at Ground Zero.

Love ya with a feelin' Saint Croix, but it seems extremely disrespectful to play one-upmanship over people, presidents, and candidates paying their respects to the dead. I'm not feelin' that.

Going through my late father's papers earlier this month I found a letter to him from Navy Secretary James Forrestal.

Secretary Forrestal thanked him for his service in the US Navy, for his valor and courage, and wished him every success in his life after separation from the Navy.

Dad was on Guadalcanal, we knew that although he didn't speak of it until his last year. What we didn't know was that he was one of forty sailors in his battalion who survived that battle.

My man. Nobody could do this better than McCain. He must feel it every moment he's down there.

That is when he's at his best.
