"It's the right of all Afghans to have their ethnicity listed on the card."

"Ethnicity is mentioned in the constitution and in the national anthem, so it should be on the card too."

The controversy isn't over whether the government will put each person's ethnic identity on the official ID card. It's over the new cards that will have the information only within an electronic chip.
"In Afghanistan, everything is divided according to population size of the ethnicities," [says one student.] "The military, government jobs, spots in universities — if we are shown as less, then we get less."

He argues it's critical to list ethnicity so that the government and society know the exact percentage of each group. He and many others argue the percentage of Pashtuns is overstated, and as a result, they get a larger share of power and jobs.

"It's a competition," says Mohsen. "We want to have more power over other ethnicities."

A successful genocide tends to obviate these sorts of concerns.

Maybe the American tax dollars we send there have some kind contagion attached, because we have the same problem with them here. I thought they laundered that money to prevent this kind of thing.

How different is this from affirmative action? At least they are trying to be fair and honest. Our race hustlers can't even manage that.

But.....diversity is good!?!?
Right???

I love the idea NPR is talking about this as if they actually have a clue.

Just like Shotgun Joe telling us the solution to the campaign in Iraq was to make each of the 3 old provinces a separate nation.

Ethnicity shouldn't matter, unless...of course...the economy is based on government hand-outs.

Maybe Afghanistan will lead the way to us tracking ethnicity for the sake of further diversity.

And cut down on the overreprestentation of Jews in the Ivy Leagues, and address the under-representation of Poles, Filipino-Americans, etc,

Cast an eye about obtaining diversity in the NBA by race, ethnicity, and sexual preference.

After all, Afghanistan is testimony to the strength of Diversity and how wonderful it is for everyone, much as Yugoslavia was, and Iraq is now.

Sure, why not? While yr at it, list sexual orientation also.

They'd fit right in with the Democrat party, wouldn't they? Remember how their delegates were allotted at the last convention, with half of the delegates required to be women, and certain percentages to be designated victim minority groups by race and sexual orientation. "We finally got our piece of the pie-ie-ie-ie-ie!"

Ha ha. Dumb goathumpers. Don't they know quotas based on tribes are bad? That's backward, regressive, and dull.

Here, smart professors support affirmative action -- not quotas -- that twist and contort to comply with laws requiring equal government treatment of individuals, and then we twist and contort some more to ensure that the right kinds of the right tribal minorities also benefit. That's forward, progressive, and nuanced.

It's exactly like the opposite of America (or at least ideal America)!

That said, it might be a better solution than an ethnic plurality (42% Pashtun) trying to Fix Things For Itself and starting a civil war...

We will soon have cards like that, too--except of course ours will list the contents of our characters.

Now, OUR diversity, for us here in the U S of A, would need all of NSA's computers to keep up with, for all those of multi-multi-ethnic backgrounds, which is most of us.

American Whites don't grasp the concept of tribe yet, but they will soon. Hopefully before 2035.

The big lie: diversity is a good thing.

Name a human endeavor - aside from education, where you need it to justify quotas - in which diversity makes things work better. Does diversity make road repair easier? Is diversity the key to military success?

In most things, where people are actually doing something, standardization of process makes things easier. And if you are truly standardized in method, it doesn't make a damn how many colors or ethnicities are engaged in the effort. We are made stronger by what we have in common.
