My cat was doing that yesterday, wallowing around on the deck in the sunshine. He misjudged though, and rolled down the steps. This has been such a cruddy spring that my tulips are only now beginning to bloom, almost a month later then usual.

Quasy does that a lot.

Rolling... grass... *jazz music plays in background*

Is this supposed to be a metaphor for Obama's college years?

He looks like rhs.

That's a smell roll, not a scratch all over roll.

That's what I read here.

It's a German pinscher, not a Doberman.

A good roll in fresh grass is a vastly under-appreciated pleasure.

The etymology of Pinscher is source dependent. The OED link claims relation to the English "pinch" in the odd context of clipped ears. I say odd because to pinch in German is kneifen which looks and even sounds like (but appears to be a false cognate with) our word knife.

My Duden Herkunftswörterbuch recites (translating):

Pinscher: The origin of the name of the dog breed, used since the beginning of the 19th century, is unclear. Pinscher is possibly derived from Pinzgauer and designates a dog type which stems from Pinzgau, (Salzachtel, Austria).

I always have believed that the dog is rubbing the scent of other dog's urine onto himself. Maybe its like celebrity worship in the smell world.

Here's my mother's dog, Maggie, doing an amusing full-body scratch on some scratchy carpet.

Another kind of rolling that Spring brings to mind

Didn't know that there was a German pinscher. Re-looked at the video and noticed that she was not as slim and leggy as a Doberman.
The German Pincher (Standard Pinscher) is one of the foundation breeds that were used to create the Doberman. The Doberman was created in Germany by a tax collector Mr. Louis Dobermann. Many crosses were used to create the Doberman. German Pinschers, Rottweilers, Beauceron Pinschers, Manchester Terriers, and the addition of the Greyhound gave the Doberman its' sleek and racey look.

re: Maggie, she is sure one cute chunker!
