"Can you think of any reason why the neck was severed if that baby was not born alive?"

The prosecutor takes a different perspective on what Kermit Gosnell's lawyer had asked the medical examiner: "Based on the totality of the evidence... you cannot testify to anyone that this fetus was born alive?"

Also: "Former employees testified last week that Dr. Gosnell gave different explanations for why he kept up to 30 specimen jars containing fetal feet." What were the explanations? Some special reason for keeping the feet? Fetus feet... feetus... a sick pun?

Yes, a lot of prolifers wear lapel or dress pins depicting the soles of unborn babies' feet. The point is that they are utterly and obviously human even when the baby is only a few months along. The friend of a friend I first saw wearing this said that they're actual size, too, which is part of the point. (I forget what number of weeks they were actual size for: I'm sure anyone interested could find out.)

I'm sure Ruth Anne is right: Gosnell kept the feet of his victims rather than some other body part as a sick sick joke aimed at prolifers.

Of course they were born alive, no need to snip the spine otherwise. I can't believe that anyone would think they weren't.

Too much cutting and decapitation and amputation lately. First there was this story pounding away every day, then a particularly graphic and sudden amputation on Game of Thrones Sunday, then all the legs yesterday. The images just go one to the next to the next in my mind.

Obama is still solidly Pro-abortion, in all instances and at all stages including late term.

It's awkward being green.

The Fox News White House reporter asked Jay Carney about the Gosnell trial. Carney said the president is aware of it and the details being reported are “certainly” “unsettling.” Given it is an ongoing trial, Carney, said, the White House could not comment further.

Henry continued with Carney, bring up the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act President that Obama opposed when he was a state legislator in Illinois (a position of the president’s that has long been largely ignored by the media). Carney had no comment. When Henry asked if the president might support any “commonsense reform” to “save lives,” Carney assured Henry that “the president’s position on choice in clear” and tried to get a lifeline from Bill Clinton, citing him and his “safe, legal, and rare” slogan.

So are you clear on where Obama stands on late term abortion? "Safe legal and rare!"
Even when it isn't.

It also depends on the meaning of "is".

Gosnell and his clinic aborted 56,000 infants. Even for blase America that seems like a pretty big number.

Anonymous said...

I may be wrong, but I don't think Gosnell was a ghoul without a purpose. I believe that every single decision he made in that " clinic" was based on money. I think he sold those little feet, that has yet to come out in testimony.

Or, not. I thought I read somewhere he destroyed the clinic's records.

The reason for the freezer full of fetuses was more mundane. Dr. Gosnell was disputing charges by his medical waste disposal firm. He froze the remains and other medical waste awaiting a resolution that never happened.

Like a lot of high school sophomores, 15-year-old Ashley Baldwin found a job.

Baldwin, however, wasn’t working retail or fast-food. She was doing ultrasounds, administering intravenous medicine and, ultimately, assisting in abortions performed by West Philadelphia doctor Kermit Gosnell.

Baldwin, now 22, and the mother of a two-year-old, today told a Philadelphia jury hearing Gosnell’s murder trial of her unusual hands-on medical apprenticeship.

She also told of seeing at least five aborted babies moving, breathing and, in one case, “screeching,” after procedures at Gosnells’ Women’s Medical Society clinic at 3801 Lancaster Ave.

“They looked just like regular babies,” Baldwin said to Assistant District Attorney Joanne Pescatore.

Baldwin said one baby she saw was so big that Gosnell joked that “this baby is going to walk me home.”

Lovely.

For some reason the story about the 15 year old got to me at yet another level. I guess I've long known and accepted that pro- abortionists existed and that the clinic workers seem to be able to harden their hearts by pretending the babies aren't really human. But for a clinic worker who had gone through that hardening of heart to then put her teenaged daughter into that situation was a scandal of a new sort that I hadn't seen before.

KCFleming said...

Gosnell should have kept a few frozen uteri around, and put the baby, er, delivered fetus, inside it, and then kill it.

Technically "in utero", so just another old timey boring abortion.

From James Taranto's column yesterday (quotations are from the grand jury report):

It was called the Mother's Day Massacre. A young Philadelphia doctor "offered to perform abortions on 15 poor women who were bused to his clinic from Chicago on Mother's Day 1972, in their second trimester of pregnancy." The women didn't know that the doctor "planned to use an experimental device called a 'super coil' developed by a California man named Harvey Karman."

A colleague of Karman's Philadelphia collaborator described the contraption as "basically plastic razors that were formed into a ball. . . . They were coated into a gel, so that they would remain closed. These would be inserted into the woman's uterus. And after several hours of body temperature, . . . the gel would melt and these . . . things would spring open, supposedly cutting up the fetus."

Nine of the 15 Chicago women suffered serious complications. One of them needed a hysterectomy. The following year, the Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade. It would be 37 more years before the Philadelphia doctor who carried out the Mother's Day Massacre would go out of business. His name is Kermit Gosnell.

Is anyone else getting the impression that this guy has had a lifelong obsession with severed baby limbs? I am.

Where was the Illinois EPA in all of this? There are regulations for disposing of "medical waste" -- keeping logs, for example -- and it sounds like Gosnell violated most of them.

Leit Bart,

Gosnell worked out of PA, not IL. Whether transporting women across state lines for purposes of obtaining an abortion was illegal in 1972 I don't know, though.

"Mr. McMahon has argued that none of the infants was killed, that they were in death throes from the abortion drug, Digoxin, that Dr. Gosnell administered earlier."

Prof. Althouse has suggested that what Gosnell did was not abortion, and was instead murder. Interesting that Gosnell's attorney is arguing the exact opposite.

Also interesting that according to the lawyer the infants weren't "killed" even though they "were in death throes from the abortion drug." That sounds much like the reasoning my brother and I tried on our mother: "I didn't hit him, he got in the way of my fist."

There is no immunity from murder when the victim is dying.

Suppose a person jumps off a 50-story building facing certain death as soon as he hits the ground. However, as he is falling past the 20th floor, someone pulls out a rifle and shoots him in the head, killing him before he hits the ground. Verdict: murder.

Gosnell and Obama are birds of a feather, based on Obama's position on infanticide.

And that's exactly why the MSM wanted to ignore this.

Interesting (and sick) that Gosnell "trained" staff as young as 15 years old for his special kind of abortion.

The CDC booklet details how carefully the abortionist must count up the feet and hands, arms and legs and other body parts to make sure that every part of the little one is removed from the uterus so that no infection can start up. If a person is accustomed to handling tiny body parts and counting them up, there is no telling what that does to his psyche.
