"When people come and visit me and have a hat made..."

"... it's a little bit like visiting a psychiatrist, but they don't actually realize that."

If the right hat would solve your mental problems, what would that hat look like?

At the black Baptist churches, the mature ladies wear the most outrageous hats, with about a foot of ornamentation piled up on top of their heads.

Plumage is especially favored.

Sometimes, the hats make the ladies look like crows!

What movie is that? Sabrina?

Ann, you are one of the unkindest people around.

Yes, psychiatry may have been inapt. Perhaps a better reference would have been psychology, as in talk therapy, as in they come in and express themselves in the specification of a hat, review and sampling of hats, and then feel better. Perhaps a variation on bartender therapy.

But everything with you is a dig, a prod. You congratulate yourself on your willingness, your liking to disturb. I bet being beaten, raped and having a finger or an ear cut off would disturb you, but you wouldn't be so quick to advocate it. You are seriously annoying.

LOL! Khematite@aol beat me to it. (I'm batting O for 2 this am, wyo sis beat me to the "rolling stone" bit on the other thread as well)

PS: I don't know about all hats, but some manage to induce nausea: My Mother once said that: "If I see one more picture of Jackie Kennedy on a magazine cover wearing that GD pink pill-box hat I'm going to throw up!"
LOL!

In the primitive so-called "bigfoot" style of cartooning, a lady's hat is an open container with some flowers or maybe some fruit.

Thanks, but you didn't answer my question. I'll suggest, for you, a helmet.

You know, it balances on your head just like a mattress balances on a bottle of wine.

My favorite hat is a cowboy hat of course. My grandfather had three Stetsons in rotation at all times. A beautiful perfect one worn for church and special occasions, a less perfect one for going into town and an old beat up sweat stained one for work. All Stetsons, all a grayish fawn color.

Depends- does the new hat fit over my everyday tinfoil one or does it replace it?

Mein Hut, der hat drei Ecken,
Drei Ecken hat mein Hut,

So wär es nicht mein Hut.

It teaches children the subjunctive.

Think of hats as subjunctive.

I'm guessing you grandfather was quite old when you came along.

That color suggests a man who didn't want to advertise his presence coming over a hill.

The right hat would look like this.

At that price, it's probably wool felt. Spring for the fur felt -- it's worth it. Wool felt distorts when you get it wet. I have a fur fedora I've worn through driving rain, though, and it's come through just fine.

My grandpa was 51 when I came along. well after the days of outlaw ambush, but in the days when a cattle ranch was a moneymaking proposition.

I just had a long conversation yesterday about fur felt. Read the Wikipedia article on felt.

Fur felt is rabbit or beaver, I think.

I've got a fur felt fedora myself. A man's hat (the only kind that fits).

Loved Sunday brunching at a soft jazz place in Baltimore and seeing all the Black Church Ladies in their fabulous hats.

Hats make me happy. The bigger the brim, the happier I am. Just now my favorite is a black gaucho hat with a band of big silver beads. In real life a hat itself is enough of an attention grabber that elaboration such as the swan in the link is vulgar, don't you think, and better suited to the stage than the street? When can vulgar ever promote mental health?

Just now I'm searching for someone to help me refurbish a much loved beaver cowboy hat that goes perfectly with my full length red wool coat - female version of a duster.

Chuck म्हणाले...

Haha.

I actually thought I might have a shot, at being the first to mention Audrey Hepburn's "brand new leopard skin pillbox hat."

I see I have been beaten to the punch x 5.

I don't think that there was any particular connection to Audrey Hepburn, "Charade," or even Jackie Kennedy (who also wore one, and who is credited as popularizing it). Probably a friend of Dylan's, possibly Edie Sedgwick, wore one and Bob went off on it.

My husband has a fur felt fedora too, though I'm the only one who's worn it in the last ten years.

Who knew so many people bought fur felt fedoras? Or do they? Is that just a thing on this blog? Is the fur felt fedora the official hat of this blog?

After seeing the old hat pictures, I can't believe women gave up that style. Imagine it being normal to an outrageous headdress everyday. That should be brought back.

I like looking at hats, although few people around here sport anything beyond the dreary baseball cap, but I can't stand wearing one, of any kind. I can feel its constant constriction squeezing and squeezing until eventually I wind up ripping it off. I call hats head-bras, as a bra seems to be another constricting item of apparel that one would always be aware of having on.

My younger sister, on the other hand, enjoys wearing hats so much that she even took a course in millinery.

BTW I couldn't help but notice that most of the hat models at the link were not wearing bras. Coincidence? Hmmm. . .

Here's the fedora I wear: Borsalino Alessandria.

I wear a bunch of hats and caps. One popular with others (they tell me) is my moose cap--big nose, eyes, and antlers. Used to have a rodeo (ro-day-oh) straw hat--high, wide, and handsome if you appreciate it.

Funny. There's also charcoal. Mine is black.

Balfegor म्हणाले...

Two interesting videos on hat-making -- Stetson and Akubra. Of the two, Akubra's felt feels a little coarser, but also lighter and more durable. I like my Stetsons, but they feel a little fancier, so honestly, I almost never wear them. Also never worn my huge black Stetson cowboy hat (received as a gift when I graduated from college) in public, but that's for different reasons. Someday, though.

I can only hope then that Obamacare covers visits to the milliner.

If purchasing a custom hat is like seeing a shrink, then the mentally ill should be able to purchase and possess firearms if only they can be made to wear the right chapeau.
