I remember from art class that orange and blue are contrasting colors (opposites on the color wheel) and as such stand out when juxtaposed like that.

Vertical stripes are slimming.

The Swiss Guards are some kind of dandy.

The Swiss Guards are actually supposed to be really super tough with ninja skills. Maybe they win because attackers do not expect super tough ninjas to dress like that.

For me, the conclave won't be over until Fr. Guido Sarducci says it's over.

How does that uniform look on a woman? No one knows.

Always found it funny that the Pope is against gay marriage......while he wears a white wedding dress.

I love it.

Conclave starts tomorrow! Woo hoo!

Man, the commenters at NPR are a bunch of fookin douches.

Every time I've read 'cardinal' in a headline during the past week, my head goes straight to baseball or birds...then I realize that I have to change gears.

"Man, the commenters at NPR are a bunch of fookin douches."

The comment over there with the most "thumbs up" right now is the one claiming no one cares about the story. Yet all those people chose to click the story and read the comments. Exactly what I expect from NPR fans.

Kevin,

The Pope's twitter account was full of nastiness. Poor souls.

Fucking douches. No need to pull your punches here.

This post cries out for a cliche (OK, another cliche) to make it work best. But which one?

Fashion is as fashion does. Not that one -- just bland nothingness.

Fashion does unto others as it would have others do to it. No, no, no.

If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. Definitely not -- what would be the point of fashion without put-downs.

Yes, dear, you look lovely. That one always works.

Oh my gosh garage! A white wedding dress! Holy shit that is so funny!!! I've never heard something like that before about the pope. You must be the life of every party.

Sorun said...

It's edgy to ridicule the pope.

It's asking for trouble.

You do not mess with the One True Church any more than you mess with God's Chosen People.

Myles Keogh was a Papal Guard.

You aren't buds with Hatman, are you?

That foto would make a funny cartoon...

Everybody is wearing the fucking ribbon... look at these guys... we haven't got a chance... that's why the pope quit.

Same for red and green or yellow and purple (on the CMY grid). Anything that makes brown.

You other readers seem to be ignorant of the fact that Michaelangelo designed those guards outfits.

I'm disappointed that the cardinals all wear the same habit when they're acting in their "princely" function. Some of them belong to religious orders and have highly distinctive habits, for instance. They should wear their typical garb to better reflect their diversity.

Timothy Dolan would make a great Pope. He would make a great just about anything.

Makes me want to watch "The Borgias" again - that's some serious fashion and architecture eye candy.

I seem to recall a Mad Magazine parody of Catch-22 where Yossarian witnesses a bunch of sordid, seamy things going on in the streets of Rome and becomes convinced he's managed to escape the war because he's now in a Fellini movie.

Funny stuff.

Oh, by the way, thanks for reading this comment.

Here's my way of saying thank you.

That's merely popular tradition. There's no direct evidence that M Buonarroti had anything directly to do with the design of the Pontifical Swiss Guard ceremonial uniforms.

This brief post reminds me of the 1972 Fellini film, "Roma." Parts of the movie are insufferable, other parts brilliant. Toward the end of the fim, one humorous sequnce shows "...a fantasy runway fashion show featuring clerical garb and a papal audience." (source = Wikipedia, and check it out if you want to see what Fellini compares this to if you can stomach yet another anti-Catholic jab, probably ultra-edgy for it's day, but somewhat tiresome now.)

I like the spats.

kentuckyliz said...

The clerical garb is Roman to remind you that we still have an empire to run.

The security guards wear medieval to remind you that at any moment they can get all medieval on your ass.

My odds on fave are the guy from Brazil, the one from Africa, or Sean O Malley from Boston!

Dolan will never get it, he's too showy.

tits.

I don't doubt the Swiss Guards are tough. Seeing how the Greek Army is dressed, I expect those guys are lethal

dustbunny said...

Palladian, I had always heard the uniforms were designed by Michaelangelo, but you're right, it's a myth
