"Hard to mock Santorum’s visibly emotional opening about his nephew’s illness and death."

"So I won’t."

How magnanimous.

Can't wait for Hatman and the rest of the compassionate Lefties.

Just another reaction to "when the personal becomes political", I guess.

MadisonMan म्हणाले...

Whatever happened to grieving in private?

The Progressive Consensus is broad but it's very very thin.

Revenant म्हणाले...

You don't have to be a leftie to think Santorum's a worthless human being. Especially when he uses the death of his nephew to push a political agenda.

Unknown म्हणाले...

Well, that went about as well as you could expect didn't it?

edutcher म्हणाले...

As opposed to, say, Albert Gore, who traded on his sister's death forever?

Truth in advertising, I have no great love for Santorum, either, but apparently the guy is affected by it.

He does get some dispensation for that.

It is a new mandate. Republicans must be given sanctified public crying space to so that they may show they are human beings - even though it's only in reference to tragedies that affect them personally.

Get with the program.

Ann Marie Cox, falling star of declining celebrity, and the queen of butt fucking jokes.

But she is known for a certain lack of integrity:

From Wikipedia: "On September 26, 2012, book publisher Penguin Group sued Cox for the return of a $81,250 advance and $50,000 in interest, payment for a humorous book Cox agreed in 2006 to produce and never provided to the publisher. Penguin cancelled the book in 2007 when Cox did not forward a manuscript."

"Al Gore's a Big Schmuck: Vote Santorum in 2016". There's a campaign poster for the ages.

Come on. When you boil it down, the speech amounted to "the tragic death of my nephew has caused me to reflect on how I'm still totally right about everything I believe". He's using a death in the family to push the exact same agenda he'd have been pushing if his nephew had live to be a hundred and twenty years old.

Feinstein tried the same crap yesterday, and I thought that was a load of hooey too. :)

Which is what, exactly? I don't follow the rallying fever swamps of right-wing self-righteousness displays, so whatever agenda Santorum could have been pushing for is as murky to me as this story of how he introduced it was.

Cedarford म्हणाले...

Santorum has gone to the well far too often exploiting death and tragedy near him for his own political advancement.

The man is a tool.

During the primaries, his ongoing stump speech was focused about 25% on "Blessed Baby Bella" as his totem and campaign prop to "connect" on an emotional level with his targeted voters.

It was not spontaneous..it was written and rewritten into his speeches by himself and his writers as a weapon to show he loved Jesus and Loved "Life" more than other candidates.

And where did I say I supported a Santorum candidacy for anything?

I just sympathize.

I wasn't implying you did, I was just poking fun at the idea that "Al Gore did it too" somehow makes Santorum less of a jackass.

But isn't the tu quoque (and other fallacies) a necessary ploy for a party committed to the destruction of reason?

If you start asking Republicans to think before they speak then God only knows what will happen.

More anger, probably.

I'm not that old but this is another instance where I'm glad I don't speak Twitter. Who follows Ann Marie Cox talking about CPAC anyway. Get a life, watch TV at least

That would, at least, be potentially worth listening to. It is dishonest to invoke tragedy to justify beliefs and goals you had well before the tragedy struck.

It is the same thing all the people trying to exploit Newton are doing. They wanted to ban guns before, but now that children are dead they... still want exactly the same thing. They just wave the bloody shirt to get it and hope nobody listening can think clearly.

Which is like really wrong and dishonest and exploitative seeing as how guns had NOTHING to do with Newton.

It takes a certain kind of magical thinking to believe that working to prevent tragedy is a way to "exploit" a tragedy.

He's next in line and has an excellent chance of winning the republican primary.

Iowa, check
New Hampshire, no way.
South Carolina, definitely.
Every Southern State, natch.

But he will get slaughtered in the general.

Vote for Santorum and win the primary but in the end lose badly.

A major dilemma.

And Portman is out for good now. Never to win a republican primary of any kind ever.

Which is only the most intelligent comment ever since the actual victims are too DEAD to "exploit" themselves.

Will the last brain cell left on Althouse kindly put the other organs to rest.

Santorum spends his time tearing at emotions. First of all, why was he at CPAC giving a speech instead of attending to his family?

During the campaign, he played his daughter's illness to the hilt. He now admits that how he worried about how "stepping off" his campaign last April due to Bella's pneumonia would be perceived.

Politics is more important to him than family. Rick Santorum does not have the credentials to be at CPAC in the first place and he spent the 2012 campaign lying about his record and that of his opponents.

Nichevo म्हणाले...

Santorum is also not an eligible natural born Citizen, as evidence has arisen that his father was not a US Citizen when Rick was born(US Naturalization Certificate dated after R. Santorum's birth)-- like the Usurper domestic enemy Obama.
Think it's a coincidence that so many that are not eligible natural born Citizens are running for President, or are mentioned as a presidential candidate---

McCain--- born in Panama Canal Zone and needed the poditive law of US Code 8 S. 1403 to be a US Citizen--- NOT ELIGIBLE.

Santorum--- Born of a resident alien Italian father--- NOT ELIGIBLE.

Jindal--- Born in La. of resident alien Indian parents--- NOT ELIGIBLE.

Rubio---- Born in Miami of resident alien Cuban parents--- NOT ELIGIBLE.

Cruz--- Born in Canada of a Canadian citizen fater, and US Citizen mother--- NOT ELIGIBLE.

Obama--- Born in Hi. of a US Citizen mother and alien British subject Kenyan father (student visa-- not even a permanent resident).---- NOT ELIGIBLE.

No, it's not a coincidence.
