As far as I've ever known, the phrase originated on the Bob And Tom morning radio show with a recurring Father Guido Sarduci-like character. A pope who was urbane, had a lot of pop-culture knowledge, and called in regularly to comment on things happening on the show. "Too pooped to pope" was always the last thing he said before hanging up.
I don't know which member of their production team did the character, but they have one or two that have enough talent for a room full of morning jocks.

I'm preferring "Pope Gives up Papacy for Lent" as the running gag.
Pope Benedict 'too old for this shit.'
There have been several popes named Urban.
I await Pope Rural.
As Craig Ferguson said, "When one Pope goes, another one popes up in his place."
Too pooped to Pope . . .
I wonder what The Dead Kennedys would do with that . . . hmmmmm . . .
"A man's got to know his limitations."
There is no human frailty nor unfortunate circumstance that at least a few asses won't try to exploit.
But then, I'm a concern troll.

My husband has been cracking up at the Pope Peel jokes. Sad.
