"Croatian romantic nationalism emerged in mid-19th century to counteract the apparent Germanization and Magyarization of Croatia."

"The Illyrian movement attracted a number of influential figures from 1830s on, and produced some important advances in the Croatian language and culture. In the Revolutions of 1848 Croatia, driven by fear of Magyar nationalism, supported the Habsburg court against Hungarian revolutionary forces."

In Croatia, today's "History of" country (wherein we read the Wikipedia "history" pages of the world's 206 countries.)

The Croats ate up their buckwheat groats.
The Jews ate up their kasha.
The buckwheat groats went well with stoats.
Kasha for Jews? A nosha.

It shouldn't be the best kept tourist secret destination in Europe, but it is.

Well, at least the She Devil of the SS can now tell her story.

If anybody cares.

Read Rebecca West's monumental Black Lamb and Grey Falcon to learn more about Croatia than you ever thought possible. It is beautifully written.

I was just in Zagreb, which is the capital and not really a tourist destination like the western Adriatic coast and the eastern national parks. The old historic central city was beautiful and the people were great... but the less touristy sections of the city were completely covered in graffiti which I found dumbfounding and depressing. 150 year old buildings just coated in spray paint. When I asked some locals about this, they said that 1) the penalties for graffiti were not harsh enough, and 2) there is an attitude left over from the communist era that taking care of the building is somebody else's responsibility so nobody was going to make the effort to clean it up. I have some photos on my blog if you care to look.

And so it continues even today. Both my Hungarian daughter and son believe that Croatia is still properly part of Hungary.

Croatia only pawn in game of life. The independent existence of a Kingdom or Republic of Croatia only adds up to a couple centuries, separated in time by vast seas of subject years, under Magyar kings, under Sultans, under arms in the Krajina for distant Hapsburg overlords, under the Dual Monarchy, squabbling with their fellow Slavs like so many crabs in a bucket and spitting at the Magyars yet again, under the Serb domination of Yugoslavia, as lick-spittles for the Nazis, under Tito at last.

There are ferocious stories of Croat border-lords in the years of Ottoman expansion, like that one count, holding a key fortress on the frontier, under hopeless siege by a Turkish army, standing at the breach of his last citidel, having lit the match to his own magazine, blowing himself, his retainers, and thousands of screaming Janissaries into the darkened heavens. What was that guy's name? Ah! Nikola Šubić Zrinski!

Don't look now, but that's the seal of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
