I'm amused at how the locals are so sick of winter already. But this is my first Midwestern winter in decades. I'll probably get sick of it eventually also.

It's snowing in the back yard and raining in the front yard in Ohio.

Aaarrrrggghhhhhh!

What part (just general locale (NE, SW), you don't have to give a town or county)?

We wanted the snow. Very happy to get it. Took a lunch break to ski at Odana Hills. I hope it stays a while, at least until the 10th.

Biology dictates the autonomic response to predators. In the big city, they are all herd animals, counting on safety in numbers. Sure a few will be tossed on the subway track or shot or mugged, but a lot of locks on their doors and a high dollar address will afford a lot of protection. It makes perfect sense to ban guns.
People outside the cities are Honeybadgers. You better have a tire iron, or better yet, a gun around, because you are isolated some of the time, and a prime target walking alone into a house at night.
Both self-preservation schemes work in their habitats.
There is no agreement between the two cohorts because they have totally different survival tactics.

Late February is not 'already'. By late February people who aren't sick of snow are either remarkably patient, or they are those insufferable skiers.

If it's still here in April, I'll be getting a bit more antsy. As for now, I'm still liking it - and I don't ski.

I'm near Verona.

Jeez, everyone really IS a critic:

Those sharks are a tough crowd...

Yeah, early April is the right time to be sick of winter. The spring equinox is past and Easter stuff is everywhere. Then it snows and you go, "It's supposed to be spring. WTF?"

Easter is March 31st this year.

I don't mind April snow. I know it'll be gone in 4 days, tops.

So I got evicted yesterday. It's weird having nothing but the clothes on my back. Gonna have to figure out the logistics of regaining of all my belongings. I wish I had an Amazon portal for donations!

When you ain't got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.

How does it feel? Terrifying, but exhilarating to have all these years of contention and dread about my apartment, finally, at a conclusion.

And I can't fall apart, I have a class to teach!

chickelit said...

Sorry to hear that Palladian. That happened to Ron too--another legacy commenter.

Palladian said...

Thanks chick. I remember Ron well.

George Gershwin would sympathize.

Hang in, this could be an opportunity rather than a disaster.

Wise words, and exactly how I've been thinking about it. Thanks.

God will provide.

Cool, but not too cold, I hope.

I don't think I like the one tree that's leaning in the direction of the power cables. If you haven't gone on amazon.com to get yourself a generator, you and Meade might want to think about it.

@Palladian, no place we can send a donation? Or buy a picture or something?

You can also ask garage for help -- over on the other thread he boasts about having the money to take care of everybody.

Ann Althouse said...

@Palladian I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope you have a place to stay while you work this out.

edutcher said...

Regarding the tree in the pic, Mike has a point.

Palladian said...

Big Mike, thanks for the offer. Unfortunately all of my artwork (nearly my entire life's work), my printer, my scanner, my digital files, are currently under lock-and-key, controlled by my landlord and a marshal, so I can't currently sell anything. If anyone would care to chip in a few bucks to help out, you can email me (address in profile or on my website) and I can give you my PayPal address. If anyone cares to do that, I'll send you an art print when I'm able to access my belongings.

I do, at least for a few days, and I'm working on finding a room until I can get things together.

It's amazing how easy it is for anyone to fall through the cracks.

You do have a lawyer, I hope.

Cracks are widening these days. I'm straddling one myself.

Palladian, I'm sorry to hear this.
I hope you can eventually get your stuff back.

Years ago I was homeless for a short time, but I remember it vividly.

If you can figure out a way to get it, I'd be happy to make a donation.

MadisonMan said...

Palladian, my sympathies, and I'm glad to read you are treating this as an opportunity. That's a positive, positively American, mindset for a setback.

Jesus Christ Palladian, I feel fucking awful. Seriously. What the hell happened.

Where can we send you some money.

I seriously feel awful even though I have been a bitch. You are an amazing creative intelligent man.

Titus said...

Palladian, can I ask what you owe to your apartment? How far behind are you? Can I help you with getting it back.

What the fuck are you doing and where the fuck are you.

Dear God, I am really upset.

Or buy a picture or something?

I did.. about three weeks ago. I disclose this to encourage others.

Good luck, Palladian.

Palladian said...

Thanks for your kind words everyone. The whole mess started for several reasons, I had classes cut because of lower enrollment at the school where I teach. Since we're all contract workers there, rather than salaried, that meant a loss of income. At the same time my mother developed a serious pancreatic disease and them suffered an unexpected heart attack at the same time. Since my mother is single and I'm an only child I had to spend a lot of money helping her and lost a lot of freelance jobs because of the travel and time commitments. And once you go underwater, it's very hard to surface again.

I mostly needed to vent about it, and for some reason that's easier to do with "strangers" than friends, even though some of you would certainly qualify as friends at this point.

All the best Palladian. Good fortune ahead, I hope.

Palladian said...

You do have a lawyer, I hope.

I don't, unfortunately, and my search for assistance through various aid societies has revealed that aid is only available for a couple of hours, twice a week, during my classes! You would think that a liberal paradise like New York would have a lot of help for people in my situation. Think again. I saw so many people at the housing court, many in more dire straits than I am, getting no help or advice at all.

Palladian, my sympathies, and I'm glad to read you are treating this as an opportunity. That's a positive, positively American, mindset for a setback.

Thanks. That's how I've been coping with it, as an opportunity for transformation. I'm alive, and free, and even though I love objects (and own a lot of objects), they're not my life. It's all opportunity at this point.

Palladian said...

Thanks again for that. I hope you're happy with it! One of my big concerns is rescuing my artwork from my place.
