Video from the "Guns Across America" rally here in Madison, Wisconsin today.

Here's some edited video showing the crowd and the signs.

In the middle there is a prayer, and at the end is the national anthem. Once you get to the national anthem, it's all national anthem from there on. I decided not to edit that part down because you get a good view of the people who attended the rally and their attitude.

The prayer is quite interesting, including some discussion of what Jesus said to Peter after he cut off a man's ear. (Jesus didn't tell Peter to surrender his sword. He told him to "put it back in the holster." My Bible says "sheath," but Jesus wasn't speaking English.)

At 2:07, you see a sign that says "Political Power Grows Out of the Barrel of a Gun. Mao," held next to a second, matching sign that says — in between 2 peace signs — "Support and Defend the Constitution."

At 2:15, I'm talking to this man about his nice-looking but hard-to-stop-and-read sign:

Untitled

He asks me if I recognize the face and (despite knowing I'm wrong) I guess Michael J. Fox. He lets me know it's Ayn Rand and I say I'll read it later (knowing I've got the still). It says: "The uncontested absurdities of today are the accepted slogans of tomorrow. They come to be accepted by degrees, by dint of constant pressure on one side and constant retreat on the other - until one day when they are suddenly declared to be the country's official ideology."

At 2:35, I talk to a counter-protester with a sign that says "Ban High Capacity Magazine Clips" and ask "What's a magazine clip?" She knew there was some question about that term, but she'd researched it on the internet and decided that was the term she wanted to use. Perhaps saying "magazine clip" is a way to signal which side you're on. A shibboleth.

ADDED: Other stills from the rally here.

A "magazine clip" is what she should get across the ears. Something about the size of Vanity Fair.

cryptical म्हणाले...

I like it when people use terms like "magazine clip" it tells me that they're not making a reasoned or well thought out argument.

Emil Blatz म्हणाले...

"Magazine clips" categorizes the gal as belonging to ignorance and stupidity. Which has a very large chapter in the city between the lakes.

edutcher म्हणाले...

Like the Tea Parties, quiet, clean, and orderly.

Interesting the only people who Ann talked to who weren't informed were the Lefties.

madAsHell म्हणाले...

You should have asked her about a barrel shroud.

Nichevo म्हणाले...

Such mistakes are actually not accidental. They are assertions of superiority and control over the debate. Apparently such faux pas were characteristics of royalty a la Louis XIV, who would use such "slips" to show their generals and so forth that they were in charge - if the king says a magazine is a clip, it's a clip; that, or knowing the difference is worthless.

Absent royalty, our elites and those who identify them seem to have adopted the tactic. One wonders if clangers like "corpse-men" were intended to such purpose.

Gumby म्हणाले...

4 people accidentally shot at 3 separate events today. Not from the Onion.
Darwinian?

Sorun म्हणाले...

Ok, now who in that video qualifies as a "nutty gun humper?"

madAsHell म्हणाले...

I watched the video.

They prayed??
They sang the national anthem??
The signs, and posters were home-made??
What kind of demonstration is that?

Where's the drum circle?
Where's the Hands-Off-My-Vagina chant?

Lawyer Mom म्हणाले...

What a civil and respectful crowd. I noticed the fellow at the end of the video put his cap back on when the anthem was over.

Titus म्हणाले...

Was anyone at this event not fat?

Geez Madison event protesters call Jenny Craig or Doctor Oz.

Unknown म्हणाले...

The people who control the language control the debate. Knowing the correct term somehow puts you on the incorrect side of the issue. Very subtle, but effective if you're "in the know."
It's a cool kids thing.

Unknown म्हणाले...

The coolest kid of all. Tits

Titus म्हणाले...

As a member of Gays for Guns and Gays for Gingrich I was hoping for more fab representatives.

James Pawlak म्हणाले...

Christians (And others) should read Luke22:35-38. That is His last "General Order" to all of his followers. Statements made by Jesus at and after his death were only to his inner circle.

Nobody had a "gub" sign.

Chip Ahoy म्हणाले...

My favorite part is the magazine clip lady who learns as she goes. She's got a good, "I'll figure this out as it's sorted" kind of attitude toward being politically antagonistic.

ricpic म्हणाले...

Old White Men - hiss boo - must die so that Barry may live and prevail!

Craig Howard म्हणाले...

You didn't recognize Ayn Rand?

No sarcasm meant there; I'm just truly appalled. Quickly, go read this as penance.

Bob Boyd म्हणाले...

She says, Its the thing that hold the bullets "I think". She doesn't even know for sure what the damn thing is?
I guess she's against Hi-Cap Mags because everyone she reads/hears tells her she should be.
Like Ann was writing the other day, the woman just wants to be a good person.
Reminds me of a line from The Quiet American by Graham Greene:
"Innocence is like a dumb leper who has lost his bell, wandering the world, meaning no harm."

Rick67 म्हणाले...

Hate to say it but that's a good quote. Ayn Rand was right about a great many things and we are living her novels right now.

furious_a म्हणाले...

Where's the Hands-Off-My-Vagina chant?

Where are the giant, paper-mache' puppets?!?

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

"You didn't recognize Ayn Rand?"

Not from that sign.

Rick Lee म्हणाले...

I thought it was a young David McCallum.

Jerome म्हणाले...

I am thinking more Flannery O'Connor;

“She would of been a good woman," said The Misfit, "if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life.”

ErnieG म्हणाले...

It's like a special handshake. People who say "magazine clip" are communicating the same message as the people in the '70s who said Neehaaarrrraguaah and ThaanthaalbaaDORD.

Petunia म्हणाले...

It can't be a proper Madistan protest without giant puppet heads and a crocheted uterus or two.

SH म्हणाले...

Magazine clips huh? Shuurre ban em if you want.

jr565 म्हणाले...

She also wants to ban the scary guns. and the shiny guns and the ones that go pop pop pop really fast.

SH म्हणाले...

" jr565 said...

Go ahead and ban 'automatic' 'guns' too. :)

Does the blueing solution work on stainless?

Nichevo म्हणाले...

Yeah, Ernie, you dig it. It's kinda like a shibboleth. Maybe GWB did this with his use of "nucular."

Nichevo म्हणाले...

And Titus, you're busted. We all know you weigh 400 lbs and the reason you don't like to give up your ass is because nobody's been able to spread your cheeks wide enough to stick it in.

I assume you got the hubby because you dropped the rag on a stick you use to wash yourself and because Indians work cheap. Tell us, what caste is it who are allowed to bodyslave for morbidly obese white boys? I mean white men because your boyhood is so far behind you.

bagoh20 म्हणाले...

"yep...safer...

Damn, you people are dumb on the left.

How many were shot in D.C., Chicago, Detroit, and L.A. with all that effective gun control, and those ones weren't accidental. They were murder or attempted murder.

Gun control, yep...safer...

Synova म्हणाले...

More people were undoubtedly seriously hurt from falling down stairs today.

Thank God for these people that they're covered under ObamaCare.

Synova म्हणाले...

Though if we're going the anecdote
route...

Deputies say the girl was home alone when a man she’d never seen before, rang the front doorbell. They say when no one answered the door, the man went around to the back of the house and kicked a door open. That’s when authorities say, the girl grabbed a gun and hid in a bathroom closet. . . ."

The man went through the entire house and finally got to bathroom closet. Seriously... what is it with robbers? No one answers the door so they don't just grab electronics or the jewelry on the dresser, they search the whole house including the crawlspaces and bathroom closets?

The 12 year old shot him through the door of the closet.

Yes... safer.

Alex म्हणाले...

what is your point garage? That because there are dumbasses who don't know how to use guns properly therefore all guns should be banned?

Were you referring to this ObamaCare?

"The essence of the government’s argument is that it has the authority to kill Americans not only in secret, but also without ever having to justify its actions under the Constitution in any courtroom,

Adam Lanza = 20 Children.

Barack Obama = 62+ Children

Snark म्हणाले...

Such a deluded part of the culture. And you'll never see it. Unfortunate.

TexasJew म्हणाले...

With 200 million guns already out there, whats the point of gun control anyway, except to intimidate law-abiding freedom-loving Americans?
ie, Conservatives

Rusty म्हणाले...

With 200 million guns already out there,

300 million. In the hands of 80 million plus gun owners.
if just 2% of those gun owners organized to resist the government there is nothing the government could put against it. Barring obviating the Posse Comitatus act.
I'm sure the bureaucrats in Washington have figured this out too. I know the ones in Illinois have.

TMink म्हणाले...

As a nation we are having a discussion about our personal security. Some of us think we should further outsource our security to the police and government. Private gun ownership is contrary to that outsourcing. I am not sure what they think the overall problem is, but reducing access to guns is a large component of their greater vision.

Another group of Americans is dissatisfied with outsourcing. They believe that the crime problem is in part due to the outsourcing, with specific problems such as criminals not being punished or isolated from society enough, as well as law enforcement too focused on status and freedom reducing agendas rather than crime fighting. To these Americans, owning guns is part of taking back the responsibility for personal and family safety. Even neighborhood safety.

The Black Panthers originated as a group that felt the need to take responsibility for their community's safety in Oakland. The "Stand Your Ground" laws are attempts to codify and legislate the personal responsibility approach. Calls for disarmament are attempts to codify outsourcing.

Cordial ,courteous, and clean was the 2nd. amendment rally crowd. The few anti-gun protesters that attended the rally were treated with respect.

My question to the readers is:
What possible public benefit can come from selling weapons to known drug runners and criminals?

Where is the rage of the American public for the conspiring of murder, and sanctioning of murder by the Dept. of Justice operating "Fast and Furious".

Kirk Parker म्हणाले...

Jerome,

Love, Love, LOVE that quote!

Nichevo म्हणाले...

Oh please, Tit-us, one of your moobs weighs 155. You are as flabby as your prose. We'll be hearing about the paramedics cutting into the walls to get you out of your bedroom some day, I can see it now.
