Looks like it's going to stay ugly in Syria. Hope genocide either way doesn't happen. The Allawites and Christians supporting Assad are in big trouble if Assad loses.

I used to listen to KFAC in Los Angeles. It was a classical station and, about 10 or 15 years ago, changed to hard rock or rap, or something. Now, the only classical station is KUSC, run by my alma mater.
It used to have an evening program called "The Gas Company's Evening Concert." That announcer had a very distinctive voice. One night I went to the Hollywood Bowl a few years after KFAC vanished. The gas company announcer was the announcer at the Bowl. He got a standing ovation from 20,000 people.

I remember a few years ago when the middle east was looking like it might be headed in the right direction, with Al Qaeda embarrassed and demoralized, the first real Arab democracy in place, people openly celebrating their freedom, and the most destabilizing leader in the region hanging from a rope.

There was a report on BBC early in the revolt. The bodies of teen age children were returned to their parents. The bodies were bruised and their genitals were mutilated. That report was on that one day, and there were no follow up reports. The coverage of the abuses at Abu Ghraib, by contrast, went on forever. There are people doing time for the abuses at Abu Ghraib. I don't think there's much chance that those Syrian child torturers will be ever brought to justice and, except among their immediate family, there will be no outrage either....The dynamic of the middle east is such that all change is for the worst.

In modern left-wing ideology, "religion" is the opiate of the masses, and is therefore replaced with political ideology if the religion doesn't support the left-wing ideology. Hence why
China has people who regularly test citizens on knowing party dogma---rather like inquisitors "testing" local populations in the middle ages for lack of orthodoxy.
Stalin used such tactics, as do all communists: lack of fealty to the political dogma, in the form of required government quizzes, makes you an un-person. Hitler had similar plans for his empire, once he exterminated those races he deemed too cancerous to be Nazis (Jews, Slavs, Poles, blacks, etc.).

What is needed in Syria, and most other places in the Mideast and North Africa is a whole lot of sudden death. Georgde HW Bush and George W. Bush tried hard to keep the wars small, in hopes that the "moderate Muslims would corral the crazies.
Considering that I would trade every Muslim in the world to prevent so much as a skinned knee on one of my grandchildren I am hoping that Assad flings so many of his chemical weapons around that it kills everyone, including him.
