Jimmy Carter thinks "it's okay" to legalize marijuana.

Well, then!

He took the federalism angle: "That’s the way our country has developed over the last 200 years. It’s about a few states being kind of experiment states. So on that basis I am in favor of it.”
... I think we can watch and see what happens in the state of Washington, for instance around Seattle, and let the American government and let the American people see does it cause a serious problem or not.

the libertarian in me has absolutely no problem with legalized marijuana. I am already buying stock in munchies--I am hesitating about condoms however because depending on the degree of stonedness (?) it isnt clear to me that potheads will remember to use them.

sonicfrog म्हणाले...

Carter's been on this page since he was President. He was not a big supporter of the "War On Drugs", and I seem to recall one of his Secretaries was a pot head... Actually, probably most of them were, as were 2/3'rds of Congress.

The libs likes them some federalism, in select cases.

Eric the Fruit Bat म्हणाले...

Maybe we'll all live long enough to see a brand of marijuana named after the President's brother.

That's most politicians, not just liberals. See "marriage amendment" for an example.

I knew enough farmers in eastern WA that were already growing it--mostly in hydroponic operations in potato storage sheds. If MJ is going mainstgream I wonder how soon MJ growers will be asking for federal crop subsidies.

Ask President Carter

Walter Cronkite: Do you have a question for the President?

Peter (on phone): Uh.. I, uh.. I took some acid.. I'm afraid to leave my apartment, and I can't wear any clothes.. and the ceiling is dripping, and uh.. I, uh..

Walter Cronkite: Well, thank you very much for calling, sir..

President Jimmy Carter: Just a minute, Walter, this guy's in trouble. I think I better try to talk him down. Peter?

Peter (on phone): Yeah..?

President Jimmy Carter: Peter, what did the acid look like?

Peter (on phone): They were these little orange pills.

President Jimmy Carter: Were they barrel shaped?

Peter (on phone): Uh.. yes.

President Jimmy Carter: Okay, right, you did some orange sunshine, Peter.

Peter (on phone): Very good of you to know that, sir.

President Jimmy Carter: How long ago did you take it, Peter?

Peter (on phone): Uh.. I don't know. I can't read my watch.

President Jimmy Carter: Alright, Peter, just listen. Everything is going to be fine. You're very high right now. You will probably be that way for about five more hours. Try taking some vitamin B complex, vitamin C complex.. if you have a beer, go ahead and drink it..

Peter (on phone): Okay..

President Jimmy Carter: Just remember you're a living organism on this planet, and you're very safe. You've just taken a heavy drug. Relax, stay inside and listen to some music, Okay? Do you have any Allman Brothers?

Peter (on phone): Yes, I do, sir. Everything is okay, huh Jimmy?

President Jimmy Carter: It sure is, Peter. You know, I'm against drug use myself, but I'm not going to lay that on you right now. Just mellow out the best you can, okay?

Peter (on phone): Okay..!

Willie Nelson Smoked Joint on White House Roof During Carter Admin

Nonapod म्हणाले...

Soon it'll be legal to smoke a joint in a restaurant... meanwhile those hateful tobacco smokers will only be able to smoke in the privacy of their own home and only in their state licensed smoking area of the house.

Of course not in the affluent suburbs, keep it in low income neighborhoods.

So Carter thinks the headline should be "Feds Stand By As States Experiment With Marijuana?"

Me too - too bad libruls don't have the same attitude to most other programs.

Seattle, the new Amsterdam. Not to be confused with the old New Amsterdam. Or something. You wanna swing that splif back in this direction, buddy?

America has changed since the 1970's SNL skit. Back then the idea of a presidential raffle was considered humor.

I'm Full of Soup म्हणाले...

I wonder if libruls will lobby to have Workers Comp rules changed so blood tests, etc do not screen for marijuana use? Of course, that would put the libruls on a collission course with the nanny staters like MADD etc.

traditionalguy म्हणाले...

I predict Jimmy Carter's State will be the last one to legalize MJ.

All available evidence indicates that marijuana use, pornography, and gay marriage will not subvert or corrupt the moral order of society. Neither will they exalt, liberate, or in any subsstantial way enhance such moral order.

Good for Jimmy. It will probably never happen but it would be awesome if the dems started pushing federalism.

We need to legalize marijuana, for the simple reason that it will either turn out to be no problem at all, or will serve as a poignant reminder of why it was banned in the first place.

Personally, I don't like it being legalized. De-criminalized, yes, but it needs to be kept in check.

Then again, I wouldn't mind living living in a world full of drugs and other dangerous things in which the majority wasn't interested in taking them and the minority used them respectfully.

We'll see.

Not if you wrap a towel around yourself first. At least, that's what they tell me.

Never happen. The idea that something, somewhere is unregulated by experts terrifies them.
