"A great example of where ['Liz and Dick'] doesn't dare go as far as reality is the way the movie depicts the end of Taylor's marriage to Eddie Fisher."

"In real life, as in the film, Burton really did demand that Taylor pick between him and Fisher, and she chose Burton—right in front of Fisher."
In Liz and Dick, this scene marks the end of Taylor's marriage to Fisher. In real life, though, the cuckolded Fisher hung on for quite a while longer. According to Furious Love, Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger's incredible book on Burton and Taylor based on their diaries and letters, Fisher called Taylor's villa days after the confrontation and Burton answered. “What are you doing in my house?” Fisher asked. “What do you think I'm doing?” Burton responded. “I'm fucking your wife.”
ADDED: Here's "Furious Love," which is only #30 in the "Rich & Famous" subcategory of the "Leaders & Notable People" subcategory of the "Biographies and Memoirs" list at Amazon. Who's leading among the "rich & famous"? Bruce Springsteen, followed by Rod Stewart. Aging boomers prefer a rock 'n' roll milieu for their vicarious memories.

And to say that in those stentorian tones would have been a real killer.

I remember Jean Shepherd mocking the tabloid-reading ladies whose only interest was Liz's marriage, back in the 60s.

I would feel sorry for Eddie Fisher if he hadn't dumped Debbie Reynolds for that harlot.

Yes, her window of opportunity is arriving. And I don't mean for entering a convent.

Oh boy. I thought Liz and Dick was a loving story of the relationship between the former vice president and one of his daughters.

I would have been surrpised in the theater.

Real life is messy. It would be tempting to think a movie or book could get to the truth about people. If it could it wouldn't be this one. Lindsey Lohan playing Elizabeth Taylor isn't going to uncover any deep truths about the human experience.

Liz really was a slut wasn't she?

Lindsay Lohan is a great ginger beauty, so all is forgiven.

Why would anyone bother with such tumultuous relationships?

Farking allah, who cares, either about the movie or what these losers did in real life?

Azzholes, every one of them, each in their own way.

They love drama

Both Fisher and Taylor lost a lot of public approval after Fisher dumped Debbie Reynolds for Taylor. Not many felt sorry for Eddie Fisher when Liz left him. Liz at this point was just a force of nature and no one expected any better from her.

Carrie Fisher, the daughter of Debbie & Eddie, had an HBO special where she discussed her parents' marriage and divorce. It was very funny. Debbie went on to marry two men, both of whom took her to the cleaners. Carrie remarked to her mother that Eddie had turned out to be the good husband.....I think celebrities live on another planet where the laws of gravity and economics are simply not applicable.

Maybe people love drama because they lack hobbies. Maybe we could increase the stability of marriages if we promoted hobbies.

Once there was Midnight Basketball for at risk youth, now we could have Model Trains or Great Books for at risk marrieds.

I don't want to get into model trains, but I'd like to have a neighbor who is into model trains, or even a neighbor who is into making models of any kind. Or electronics. Or funny mechanical gadgets.

How about a neighbor who is building a boat in his garage? Was that a fad for a while?

Once I joined up with a friend and her little brother to start a yard work business called 2 1/2 Musketeers. Our business was pretty limited because we were too little to use lawn mowers or weed eaters.

We went door to door unsuccessfully until an old man hired us to do some weeding. He led us through the house to his backyard, or, rather, a surprise botanical paradise. We were awed. It was incredible. This unassuming little house with a relatively normal front yard had an Eden behind it. It was one of those neighborhood secrets that is revealed to you over the course of childhood.

All I know is that Taylor & Burton were fantastic in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolff?". That's a must see film.

Great movie, some critics of the time said they were playing themselves.
