The Democratic National Committee puts up a site designed to trick you into thinking it's Romney's.

I'm surprised they think it's acceptable to engage in this kind of trickery... or that they want to be associated with deception.

I do understand humor, but I don't see why they think it's good for them to be fake and deceptive.

Yes, it's a dumbed down joke...just for you.

One would have to a complete moron to be "tricked" by the site. But you never can underestimate the intelligence of Althouse and many of her commenters.

Nonapod म्हणाले...

It's astonishing to me that the main theme of the Obama campaign in recent months has been to call Romney a liar. I mean, really?

This is coming from the guy that broke a promise to cut deficit in half by the end of his first term. This is coming from the guy
who broke promise to broadcast the health care negotiations on C-SPAN. This is coming from a guy who broke promise to reduce earmarks to 1994 levels. The guy who broke promise to allow five days of public comment before signing bills... repeatedly. This is the guy who is still saying that he wasn't aware of the situation on the ground and the embassy on September 11. This is the guy that insists that nobody high up in his administration was at fault over the whole Fast and Furious debacle. This is the guy who broke a promise he made to close Guantánamo Bay.

I could go on...

They can only snark about Romney.

clint म्हणाले...

Wow.

Usually, you expect things like that to be done at arms length -- this one says prominently that it's paid for by the DNC.

Wow.

The reason they think (correctly) that they can get away with this is that no one will call them on it. The Romney campaign has no interest in getting sidetracked by tomfoolery and small ball -- and, frankly, this isn't an issue he wants to keep talking about. (He's right, but it's a 5 minute answer to a five second taunt -- and in today's politics that makes it a losing argument.)

Did anyone else see the Ross Perot endorsement?

pauldar म्हणाले...

Oddly enough, I didn't see any of this on the site. I did speed read it so dang good chance I missed it.

Exactly how long did you chase the "get the details" button before you realized something was amiss.

I can see it now: "Meade, honey, come here. My computer is broken! This damn button keeps moving and I really want to know how Romney is going to lower taxes without exploding the deficit!"

Some fell for the video explanation, others didn't, via Insty:

RICE THROWS INTEL UNDER THE BUS: UN Ambassador Susan Rice is now backwalking her inane insistence that the Libyan/Egyptian and other attacks on 9/11 were spontaneous outbursts of anger about a stupid YouTube video. Apparently, the official line is now that “Intel made me do it”:

In an interview Monday with The Washington Post, Rice said she relied on daily updates from intelligence agencies in the days before her television appearances and on a set of talking points prepared for senior members of the administration by intelligence officials. She said there was no attempt to pick and choose among possible explanations for the attack.

“Absolutely not,” Rice said. “It was purely a function of what was provided to us” and had been given to Congress the day before.

Oh, what a tangled web we weave . . . .

Maybe if Obama didn't go back to bed and listened live & watched the drone feed?

Nah, there was money to raise.

Actually, my first thought on seeing that layout was "trojan malware bait". Of course, it's been a half-decade or more since the actual blackhats have needed to trick you into clicking a link to corrupt or hijack your machine, but that's definitely what this site makes me think:

Blackhat hackers trying to trick me into doing something I really, really don't want to do, something contrary to my own self-interest and self-respect.

Since people like Freder and Andy R's whole political life is about surrendering to the will of the party, I suppose the affect strikes them as charming, familiar: a minor technique of political seduction. They like it when a clever man with a strong pimp hand tells them it's for their own good.

Lem Vibe Bandit म्हणाले...

chickelit म्हणाले...

It's funny the sense that impersonation is funny, but usually people are expecting impersonation. This is just deception.

What's not funny is that deception is a core issue for both parties, and so this deliberate example seems new.

DADvocate म्हणाले...

No one is dumb enough not to get that joke.

Huh? It has to be funny to be a joke.

The real joke is, if you click on the page, a link comes up at the bottom of the page (Mitt Romney has ducked and side-stepped every attempt to get the details of his plan, which sticks the middle class with the bill for $5 trillion in tax cuts favoring millionaires and billionaires. Get the facts on his plan.) that takes you to the OBAMA TRUTH TEAM page!!!!

sakredkow म्हणाले...

Bob I agree deliberate deception would be bad - I'd be up in arms too. But this is so clearly not a deliberate deception. It's a joke on Romney for supposedly being evasive about his tax plan. It's a gimmick, not an attempt to deceive.

Like I said you might hate it because it's the Dems, it's not a fair characterization of plan, etc., but to pretend anyone's really deceived here strikes me as ridiculous.

Unless I'm missing something it's a joke with a political point. I'm not faulting you for not liking that because it's against your guy.

But tell me, worst-case scenario, who gets deceived and what do they lose?

The Democrats should be careful because I don't think that ordinary people find much humor in this election.

No? I think you overestimate the Internet sophistication among voters out there. Also, you underestimate the sophistication of the Obama supporters who practice to deceive.

But tell me, worst-case scenario, who gets deceived and what do they lose?

Normal voters, especially the flimsy "undecideds", are deceived by such things. Don'tcha think? There's all this talk about how the vote really comes down to the undecided 8% or so in the middle. Who are these people? How are they undecided? They might be somewhat naive, and probably not Internet-savvy.

It's a lame gimmick, and using the RRomney logo at the top is a tad sleazy. But this really is just a lame stunt -- not an attempt to fool people into thinking the Romney campaign said or sponsored something.

garage: "The deception is that the middle class and the working poor are going to end up paying for tax cuts to their rich friends. If Romney could detail exactly how that wasn't the case he would have done so."

Romney hasn't proposed any tax cuts. (He has proposed offsetting cuts in rates and deductions.)

How would he go about detailing exactly how he didn't propose something?

(Is it even theoretically possible to describe the manner in which one *doesn't* do something?)

What would that look like -- and how would it differ from the response he gave in the first debate?

Don't worry simpleton, everyone reading knows you can't prove any of your assertions.

The Obama campaign is in meltdown mode. Earlier today a spokeswoman said:

“President Obama takes responsibility for the safety and security of all diplomats serving overseas,” said Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki during a Fox News interview Tuesday. “Secretary Clinton of course has a great amount of responsibility as Secretary of State.”

Parsed, it comes out "I take responsibility (because I've been shamed into it, and I really NEED a gender gap), but it's her fault."

Note that once more Obama is having someone else do the talking for him. I wonder if he will be able to make himself concede that he might have had a role in setting the policy that led to Benghazi.

This comes to mind.

Poor garage mahal, so close and yet so far away. He's absolutely right "that the middle class and the working poor are going to end up paying" more in taxes. But they won't be complaining, because their take-home pay is going to be going up faster than their taxes.

Those who have no jobs are going to get jobs when taxes are cut and the economy starts booming, and will be damned glad to start paying income taxes once they have income, particularly at the new lower rates. And those who already have jobs will be paying more total taxes even at the new lower rates, because they'll be getting substantial pay raises, many of them for the first time in years. Under Romney, people won't have to move to North Dakota to get a job.

This. It's not the only thing, though. I am also positive that when Republicans in power have finished a long, hard day of cutting their rich friends' taxes, they secretly meet in a hidden, obscenely lavish DC hideaway. They wear monocles and top hats and light cigars with $1000 bills. When they're done feasting on the roasted meat of exotic endangered species, the entertainment begins. 100 poor black and hispanic orphans, some of whom happen to be gay, are ushered into the room so the Republicans can taunt and laugh at them. The grand finale: young liberal women are put in stocks and the Republicans throw Bibles and coat hangers at them.

Yes, people. This will be America's future if Romney wins.
