Should on-stage performers dumb it down for the people who aren't sophisticated enough to process humor?
I'm sure it's all very amusing for Madonna, who gets big publicity and looks "edgy" again. People call her stupid, and then she one-ups them and can seem — certainly to herself — to be quite smart. (Did you hear she has an IQ of 140? Same as Hillary Clinton. And Shakira.)
Others wielding humor have more to worry about. Like Romney with his "trees are just the right height" and, more recently, about those airplane windows that "don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that." People aren't going to get it if they don't want to get it, if they're looking for material to use to say you're an idiot.
And Romney can't make the Madonna move and call his antagonists dumb. Mitt Romney — who, like Madonna, was born in Michigan, where the trees are just the right height — has an estimated IQ in the range of 130 to 139, which is smart enough to choose whether to dumb it down in self-defense.
ADDED: Look at how Paul Ryan's antagonists are trying to hurt him by pretending not to get his sense of humor. Are they stupid or pretending to be stupid? Tobin Harshaw writes:
There is no underestimating the literal-mindedness of the American reader: Years ago when I worked at the Times we published a satirical op-ed column by Steve Martin riffing on the idea that a NASA Mars probe had discovered millions of kittens on the Red Planet. Shortly thereafter, a subscriber sent a terse letter to the editor asking us to "inform your science correspondent" that the lack of oxygen on Mars made kitten infestation highly unlikely.Wait. Why is Harshaw assuming the letter-writer wasn't doing humor?
AND: Wait. Ryan never even made those "Stench" remarks. A Politico writer made them up and intended it as satire. I thought they were good enough jokes to be believable as the casual humor of a relatively young man, and I would have appreciated them as such. Harshaw is attacking Ryan's antagonists as so hostile that they didn't pick up that it was humor. I didn't pick up that it was humor, and I was defending Ryan. That's all very odd.
ALSO: I like the way Drudge is putting it: "MEDIA 'SATIRE' HIT PIECE ON PAUL RYAN BACKFIRES.../O'Donnell, Krugman 'fooled'..." Drudge is, I think, insinuating that Politico's Roger Simon intended to be misunderstood, for the Ryan quotes to be believed, and then to reveal that it was satire after the damage was done.
MORE: Fake quotes live on as real. Remember Sarah Palin's most famous quote: "I can see Russia from my house."

Madonna saying' something "ironic" in a quest to still be relevant in show biz. Shocking!
In what world is Madonna capable of "dumbing down" much of anything? She's not exactly dealing with high thought processes.
Romney runs into a lot of danger when he tries to make jokes because humor is a human attribute and too many people think of Romney like a robot.
Also, he does that weird creepy fake laugh all the time, so it's hard to calibrate when Romneybot is trying to make a joke.
Drunk or drugged out - revolting - and yet, you wonder... is there something the 'in' crowd knows that we don't? They can say it, but we can't even ask the question? ZERO outrage from the left, just a shrug. Any non D would be called every name in the book. Ridiculed. Smeared. Attacked. Threatened. Vilified. But not this creature. Amazing.
Romney is probably not going to attract to many votes from the stupid people although some might accidentally check the wrong box.
Hatboy, of course, is one of them in spite of his self regard. Be real careful with that ballot, hatboy
"I was being ironic. Yeah...that's the ticket."
I spent some time yesterday trying to explain to my left-leaning pals that Romney was just joking when he made his airplane comment. Made me feel as dirty as when I have to defend some of the inane BS my right-leaning pals say about Obama.
A good man is a good man. That's true.
But what does that have to do with Obama?
The point I was making is that a good man is a good man, no matter who he prays to.
Oh bullshit. If a good man is a good man regardless of religion or ethnicity, then why bring it up in the first place?
And seriously, no one wants to see you strip. You were hot when I was 14. But that was 30 years ago.
I'm sure Madonna convinced a whole bunch of people to vote for Obama who would have voted for Romney had she not made that confused rant. You bet.
And now people will talk about Madonna a little for like a day or so. It's almost like she's relevant outside of her typical demographic of middle aged housewives and gay men.
Just please don't let her get naked on stage. Or anywhere for that matter.
Rose, what names have libs called Ted Nugent, Hank Williams, Jr., Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Ann Coulter, Jon Voight, Chuck Norris, Mel Gibson, etc. other than accurate descriptions of their insanity!
btw, I like Tom Selleck and Clint Eastwood regardless! :)
On the plus side, irony is completely lost on Madonna's fans, even after she explains it to them. Right now there are thousands of gnat-brained sluts out there who think Obama actually is a Muslim.
Help! I'm at O'Hare. CNN is on everywhere. So incredibly stupid.

You're so much better than both sides . . .
Actual the latest Quinnipac CBS Poll found that Michigan's trees are the right height, by a 65% to 31% ratio. QC/CBS 09/15 to 09/24
The sampling shows Michigan Residents (87%), neighboring states with a border (10%) and 3% did not know.
ALmost looks like the Media's presidential polls splits.
You owe Michiganders an apology Ann.

I guess the fool Madonna does not realize Muslims would KILL her for wearing the very cloths she wears (or not wears, so to speak.)
That is how clueless they are.
Truely they would sell them the rope used to hang them (and even sell tickets to the event.)
Madonna may have 'upwardly-mobile' intelligence; the kind that women who slept their way to the top have.
A good man is a good man because he has humble self-awareness. Not because someone says so.
Even my liberal family members and friends intrinsically know this.
Cocky assholes rarely get the 'good man' nod. Unless, of course, another cocky asshole is handing out the labels.
Madonna has entered mocking territory, as in "threatening" to disrobe if Obama wins.
Contest first prize: Ticket to Madonna concert.
Contest second prize: 2 tickets to Madonna concert.
That sort of thing.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer person.
(Did you hear she has an IQ of 140? Same as Hillary Clinton. And Shakira.)
And Joe Biden!
What would you estimate as Obama's IQ based on his performance in first term? I'd say maybe 115 but he sure aint't getting any smarter.
"Why is Harshaw assuming the letter-writer wasn't doing humor?"
Becasue liberals think no one except for them and their ilk have a sophiticated sense of humor. They want to believe we are all humorless dolts. Of course, it's always the liberal who ends up looking foolish in these circumstances.
Did you hear she has an IQ of 140? Same as Hillary Clinton. And Shakira.
I assume this means the "sum of".
I often wonder how women rock stars like Madonna, who have been sell trash everyone's daughters all these years, are going to respond to some young thug just using and debauching their daughters.
Who's endorsement would you want, Dirty Harry's or this cum dump.
Axelrod was at O'Hare today. Big guy with a big gut. He looked worried. We can hope he was.
(Did you hear she has an IQ of 140? Same as Hillary Clinton. And Shakira.)
And yet, when she heard about Bill fucking the help, she blamed something she called the vast right wing conspiracy. Anybody with an IQ of single digits would have figured out the story was true.
According to the source, Stephen Hawking and Quentin Tarantino have the same IQ: 160.
Just putting that out there.
Nothing against Tarantino, at all. Love the guy's movies.
I'm just saying: Consider the possibility that this estimated IQ is bullshit. Also, throughout the 2008 campaign there were "measure your IQ" ads all over the internet claiming that Obama had an IQ of 145. Now his "estimated" IQ is down to 120-130 even though there is no basis (grades, scores) for this estimate.
Madonna has become the Immaterial Girl. Her album is not selling, her concerts are boring. The only reason she gets publicity is because people assume her pronouncements are supposed to somehow make sense and proceed to waste their time trying to figure it out.
Everyone heard her say Black Muslim and they cheered. It's a case of being yourself when you're with "your people."
Romney should own the 47% remark because it's true and he said it and Madonna should own the Black Muslim remark because it's true and she said it.
How people respond to it is up to them. Which, is essentially what both of them are saying. You can't worry about influencing the group that will never agree with you.
My IQ was tested 3 times in college and was never as low as Madonna's here. I'm still dumb as dirt about most things, and say some stupid shit daily. IQ is bullshit, Madonna and I are proof of that. I bet Obama's IQ is 400.
Oh Madge. Still making headlines after all these years.
See Madonna understands irony now after having lived in England.
Is one of the questions to determine what your IQ is: "How many states are there?" I'll bet Madonna doesn't know either.
I took her comment as another celebrity demand for relevance.
Who thinks Andy Warhol's IQ was 86? Did he take a test and get that score or did someone who didn't get his style assess him based on things he said and wrote?
If he took a test, which I doubt, and got that score, I'd assume he didn't care about his answers. You have to want to get the answers right, and you have to get into doing some abstract stuff that many people find annoying. There's a whole emotional angle.

In 2000 I flew up to Kodiak to visit relatives. While I was there, Alaska flight 261, the same flight I had used coming up, plunged into the Pacific Ocean off Anacapa Island. It dominated the news for at least a week. A couple of days after the crash I flew back to California. Changing planes at SEA-TAC, I was subjected to CNN for several hours. Interestingly, they never breathed a word about a plane crash. I hadn't realized until then that CNN had a unique news product just for airports.
Yeah, that Politico "stench" article was supposed to be satire. Funny how their attempts at 'humor' are always from the viewpoint of ridiculing Republicans. If called on it, they just say they were joking. If not, the lie stands.
Wait...Madonna is a muslim?
My theory on making jokes: If they fail to land, that doesn't make you clever.

Clint Eastwood mocks 'dumb' Republican invite to convention
"Clint Eastwood has heaped more embarrassment on the Republican Party by stating anyone "dumb enough" to invite him to a political convention has to "take what they get."
Indeed!
"Clint Eastwood has heaped more embarrassment on the Republican Party by stating anyone "dumb enough" to invite him to a political convention has to "take what they get."
Um, he was probably joking too.
"I didn't pick up that it was humor"
I think the line "PowerPoint was released by Microsoft in 1990 as a way to euthanize cattle using a method less cruel than hitting them over the head with iron mallets" might have been a clue.
If you've ever spent some amount of time in the desert, then, yes, when you do get back to Ohio or Michigan or Pennsylvania or the like, the trees are the right height.
RE: Eastwood.
Liberals are fairly tone-deaf when it comes to self-deprecating humor.
Obama has taken a stab at this, but not effectively enough.

It's the same source you used to quote Madonna's IQ, so I think you should give it the same weight.
I like how Drudge yesterday headlined: "Madonna threatens to strip if Obama reelected," damning her with faint praise.
Speaking of humor and Madonna, I thought it was hilarious how the French booed her a few weeks ago.

Further proof that irony is lost on Madonna fans.
I think that that proportion of the electorate that thinks Obama was born in Kenya is about the same as that proportion that thinks 9/11 was an inside job. We're all pretty stupid but we have different areas of willful ignorance.....Perhaps Madonna has ironic tits. Naomi Wolfe's vagina is in dead earnest, however.
IMO, Madonna long ago said "fuck you" to straight, white male America. It's hard to laugh at that, hence the Schadenfreude.
There are aspects of the IQ test that if you "grok" you can seem more intelligent than you are. I blow away the geometry part of the test, but then I have always loved geometry. Reading books about it in gradeschool...that's why I am such a good carpenter. One of the best, if I may say so. Also loved science so that boosted my score, and reading, too. But I absolutely suck on the humanities, and writing portion.
My wife, who I've tested a few times because I didn't believe her at first, scores over 180. She cheats in that she has almost an eiditic memory. Show her something once, and she generally knows it forever. That's why her stroke pisses her off so much...you can see she knows what she wants to say, she just can't remember the words anymore(nouns specifically).
All that, and she's a stay at home mom.
Heck, the only reason I can keep up with her is I'm sneaky smart, and have a wider range of experience.
And Bagoh, the humbleness is nice, but everyone can tell you're a sharp cookie. Your arguments, and comments are always spot on and clever.

We're having a conversation about lefties missing humor and one gives us an example. That was quick !
I almost ruined a keyboard.
Politico is slipping.
All over the place. That article is a mess from the start and I would tell them this over there but I must register over there and I do not care to do that. They're bastards. Lying-ass bastards. Of the lowest order.
Imagine them trying to mislead my tender developing easily-influenced mind. With crap like this right off, Ryan distancing himself from Romney, patently false within the first paragraphs.
And in the next paragraphs, who boos a 78 year old mother? Other 78 year old mothers. No, politico, that would be AARP lobbyists, not other 78 year old mothers, you penis-breath fuck-face lying-ass bastard, what are you trying to do to my tender developing easily-influenced mind? So I quit reading it right there before I started to become a little teensy bit unkind.
Oh, the long list of people who couldn't tell Roger Simon was engaged in bad comedy. Ace has a small list.
MDNA: "Those kind human beings did not die for nothing! They fought for our freedoms! So y’all better vote for [expletive] Obama, okay?”
"For better or for worse, all right, we have a black Muslim in the White House, okay?"
How exactly is this "ironic"?
How does 'the meaning being different than what she expressed' convey anything useful or humorous or meaningful at all?
She means what, that Obama is the opposite of a black Muslim? Which means.....???
Everyone knows that Madonna is a truth teller!
God bless her.

Should on-stage performers dumb it down for the people who aren't sophisticated enough to process humor?
I don't think there's much reason to. But honestly, when I read about this yesterday, my immediate reaction was "Haha, another stupid entertainer." It's hard for me to perceive ironic humour in pop music stars like Madonna because my mental image of pop music stars is that they're all dumb as rocks.
If Obama shares the dreams of his father, and some sects of his Luo tribe, then it would seem reasonable to believe that her irony was itself ironic in its revelations.
I didn't pick up that it was humor, and I was defending Ryan. That's all very odd.
Maybe, just maybe, you're not as brilliant as you think you are! Especially since the article you linked to was about people not getting that the quote was Simon's rather feeble attempt at satire.
So Madge and Hilla have the same IQ.
Explains not only "Shanghai Surprise", but the Reset button, as well.

As humor is a human attribute, leave it to Hatman to louse up its explanation sufficiently to convince all and sundry that the spore theory concerning his creation is correct.
I don’t know how anyone could have taken this as true and not satire, given how over the top the supposed Ryan quotes were. However, people should have picked up on the article being satire when they reached the long discussion on PowerPoint, PETA, euthanizing cattle, restricting PP to conference rooms since you can lock the doors from outside, and so on.
I really think this was meant for the loony (and not so loony) left to pick up on and run with it as being true. It doesn’t matter if Politico comes out with a big banner on their website saying “SATIRE” in big flashing letters, this is now out there, and will be endlessly repeated as being fact. Looking at some of the sites and comments the Bloomberg post links to, the loony left knows it had to be true, because it “fits the narrative”. One MSNBC blogger gave an update on the possibility of it being satire, but said it had to be true, since “the column is filled with details and anecdotes that are, in fact, accurate”.
I guess I need to stop being amazed when I see people believing something as true, just because it shows up on the internet.
And seriously, no one wants to see you strip. You were hot when I was 14.
I've seen the pics of young, nude Madonna.
Meh, I've seen better.
IQ means nothing. My mother termed me as such when I was younger:
"Book smart, but common sense of a cockroach."
I know she didn't mean what she said, but that just gives people an excuse to believe that he is. Wonderful, ma'am.
My initial reaction was that it could go either way. IQ wouldn't have anything to do with it - you don't need one to be humorous, ironical, or to understand irony.
Madonna has always been weirdly stilted and clumsy with her interviews and humor. Never could understand why - maybe it's the old timey theatrical pretensions? No matter how street she tries to be, there's always a theatrical formality that bungles the joke. It works in stage performance, but not in verbal exchange.
Chip Ahoy - haha. That made my day.
Indeed. Politico is slipping.
Democrat operatives with bylines.
IQ is bullshit. I test around 140, but I've always been good at taking tests. My brother would probably test out at 110-115, but he is a sculptor who produces magnificent works in stone and bronze. I have never seen an IQ test that measures aesthetic sense, or perseverance, or good work habits. Bullshit, I say.
I do think that they served bean pie at the last state dinner a tip-off. Don't you?
At least Obama has to cut checks to Stephanie Cutter, Axelrod, Carney and Pory Pig (Gibbs). Politico and the rest of the MFM are more than willing to cover for him and spread his lies for free.
Andy, Garbage, Allie et al still thinks Palin said that.
WHAAAAT!? She didn't say that? Oh no say it ain't so!
I knew as soon as I read it,that it was a coordinated scheme by the journolisters to fool people into thinking it was real & only after it did the damage they intended, would they pull their "oops,it was satire"excuse. It's how the Media Collaborators for Obama roll. They hope some people will believe it. Thankfully most people are smarter than typical dem. voters,so it won't do the damage they wanted.

IQ's are a valid measurement, for what they measure, but the don't measure everything. Artistic talent as mentioned for example; or people skills, determination or drive, or many other factors. One with a high IQ will more likely do well in school. Doing well in school means getting into a good college, then grad school, etc. Not that you can really do anything.
And to conclude, so there are no kittens on Mars? Then what is the point in going?
Obama's the first Muslim in the White House just like Bill Clinton was the firt black president.
A lot of so-called respectable "journalists" on the left want it to be true. Isn't that enough?
Funny, these leftwing "journalists" don't seem so respectable anymore. They look like hacks.
Naah. Obama's the first gay president.
Plenty of idiots out there still think Palin said what SNL said.
Then they got on the short bus and went to a Madonna concert.
Another day, another desperate media ploy from Obama's Palace Guard.
Alanis Morrisette also struggled with irony.
Just goes to show how hostile the press is when biting satire is mistaken for another in a series of hostile articles.
It's ironic that someone who looks like Madonna can't do humor, and it's funny that she doesn't know irony.
I'm sure Roger Simon's heartfelt apology to Ryan and Romney will be forthcoming momentarily.
Campaign sign but which campaign.
"Campaign sign but which campaign."
Muslim Brotherhood?
I'm just saying: Consider the possibility that this estimated IQ is bullshit.
That's kind of a bad example, though. Both are brilliant in their chosen fields and mediocre outside of them. Highly intelligent but monomaniacal.

Joe Biden's alleged IQ of 140 is a typo. Someone inadvertently put a zero where the period belongs.
Give Madonna her due. It takes a lot of smarts to make a fortune from so little. She knows her audience well and gives them what they want.
As for estimated or guestimated IQ, Romney has released his SAT scores. Obama hasn't. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to come to the obvious conclusion on who has the higher IQ.
I believe Ann made a mistake. It wasn't Roger L Simon of PJ media but rather some other Roger Simon.

Yes it was a laugh riot in those years, when unemployment was half the level of today and the annual deficits were today's monthly deficits. So much better than the tragedy of the last four years.
"was being ironic"...assumes M. Louise Ciccone was making a pretense of ignorance -- the unanticipated result of her public beclownment is a more apt use (but I don't think she knows that).
...kinda like Joe Biden doesn't know the proper use of "literally". Literally, he doesn't.

That's like saying you don't like Microsoft Word because it's not a flight simulator (that would be Microsoft Excel). I don't think any psychometrician has ever argued that IQ is supposed to measure aesthetic sense, perserverance, or good work habits. My recollection is that at best, high IQ is somewhat correlated with good work habits and perserverance, but that's certainly not what it's trying to measure. Aesthetic sense isn't even in the same universe of what IQ measures, and no one seriously pretends it is.

I know that Obama is a Muslim, and I have known that since he referred to "my Muslim faith," during the 2008 campaign. His actions since then are consistent with his Muslim faith, including his repeated lying to infidels to further Islam.
I think it's hysterical we have a Black Muslim as president & was attacked on 9/11 again under his watch.
People might even die laughing.
Madonna is just trying to get attention, she doesn't matter anymore. Where is Lady Gaga at?
"People in this country" just don't get it. Not like Madonna and Ann Althouse and Obama and all those other sky high IQ's do. I'll bet Romney, who just misses the magic 140 mark, doesn't get it either. This country people so don't get it. Which is why Althouse' last minute walk to the polls decision will be for her fellow too-clever-by-half fool.
What's the deal with all of the winking on Drudge?
Romney saying the "trees are just the right height" was a joke?
Jesus, you people will say anything at this point,...
Don Imus has a measured IQ of 164--make of that what you will..
Why don't the liberals do a poll of Muslims in the Middle East and ask them whether they think Obama is a Muslim.
Considering that his father was a Muslim, and (as I understand it) if you are born to a Muslim father, Muslims consider that you are a Muslim, I bet easily over half the Muslims in the Middle East think Obama is a Muslim.
Of course, in our Western tradition you are whatever religion you decide you are, so if Obama says he's Christian, then according to our traditions, that's what he is. But I find it a little amusing that liberals like Maher hold up the fact that some Americans think Obama is a Muslim as some self-evident proof of idiocy, when actually, technically, and based on his being adopted by and raised for part of his childhood by an Indonesian Muslim, it is not a ridiculous belief.

Pretty sure the flight simulator was in Excel, not Word, hence my parenthetical.

I think that your argument is not precisely in opposition to mine. I'm calling out those who seem to equate "IQ" with "wisdom" or "worth". I'm not saying Word is lousy because it's not a flight simulator, but I'm definitely saying Word is not the only software you will ever need.
I'm kind of amused by how obsessed Romney-haters are with the tree comment.
Ah, the old 140 IQ. Seems like everyone in politics and showbusiness has it. Sharon Stone, Jodi Foster...
It's all bullshit, of course. What these people have is a bunch of hangers-on telling them they're "soooooo smart, you know?"
Frank Zappa supposedly had an IQ of 160+ ...
Well i turned around and i said "ho, ho"
And the northern lights commenced to glow
And she said, with a tear in her eye

Re: Eric:
It's all bullshit, of course. What these people have is a bunch of hangers-on telling them they're "soooooo smart, you know?"
Eh, they might be incredibly smart. But no matter how smart you are, being surrounded by a bunch of people constantly telling you how great you are is enough to make even the greatest genius dumb -- that kind of feedback just makes you lazy.
Re: Tyrone Slothrop:
Fair enough. I don't think there are actually that many people (other than Mensa, maybe?) who think IQ is the only thing that matters. IQ (or g) is just the most important thing for highly g-loaded tasks.
"I was recently on a tour of Latin America, and the only regret I have was that I didn’t study Latin harder in school so I could converse with those people." - falsely attributed to Dan Quayle.
It was really a Dan Quayle joke told by Rep. Claudine Schneider (R-RI).
"Romney saying the "trees are just the right height" was a joke?"
It was a joke. Out west there are a lot of scrub trees/bushes.
Of course the Usurper is a Muslim. He was born of a Muslim, British subject father, and has recited the shahada. If he would have renounced Islam, he would be marked for death as an apostate, rather than lauded in the Muslim world when he spoke in Cairo. He is a practitioner of Taquiya (lying to advance Islam), and has said he will stand with the Muslims. What else would he be?
I got an IQ of 140. Do at least one stupid thing a day, maybe two.
