Get bent: "When [the progressive faith] prevails, Wisconsin bends the arc of history toward justice."

Sentimental pap from John Nichols at the Cap Times, the morning after the recall election.

I see.

Today's theme is "I've asked you wingnuts to be magnanimous in the wake of victory, and now I'm gonna do my best to make that impossible. by quoting one crazy moonbat after another".

It's gotta be.

Progressivism is bad faith. It certainly isn't based on math or science.

chickelit ayon kay ...

He should played up some of the historical tension between Milwaukee and Madison--the Socialists versus the Progressives. I think it's still there beneath the surface.

Drew ayon kay ...

The Wisconsin story is an arc of history. It is long. But that arc has always been bent toward justice by a movement — progressivism — that had its roots in the Republican Party of the pre-Civil War days.

The radical abolitionists and socialist immigrants who founded the Republican Party at Ripon enjoyed an almost instant success, as they forged a party that opposed not just the sin of slavery but the corruption of politics and the economy by those who would monopolize wealth and power.

Nichols is concern-trolling, right?

"There is looming up a new and dark power. ... The enterprises of the country are aggregating vast corporate combinations of unexampled capital, boldly marching, not for economical conquests only, but for political power. ... The question will arise and arise in your day, though perhaps not fully in mine: ‘Which shall rule, wealth or man? Which shall lead, money or intellect? Who shall fill public stations, educated and patriotic freemen, or the feudal serfs of corporate capital?’ ”
Ann and Meade like their feudal serf gig. To quote Dylan, "you just want to be on the side that's winning!"

This Republican regime will not bring you smaller, more limited government. It will bring the opposite.

I read you folks saw Nichols on the street last week. If you want to see him most days he's @ the Ancora Coffee House across from the Isthmus office. He is one smug dude. And folks really kiss his ass.

Twill be a short honeymoon before Walker gets indicted. And the entire right wing will have a hard time decoupling themselves from Walker.

Sad though seeing a nice state overrun by smash and grab fascist tea party nutcases.

John, that was some of the best sentimental pap I've ever seen smeared on a newspaper. It's almost like mother's milk. While it falls a bit short of sugary treacle, I know you can do it.

And in a gesture of magnanimity, I just want to say that your pap not only bent the arc of history, it broke it, or at least it's now hanging hard left.

MayBee ayon kay ...

I thought the arc of history bent toward justice by some natural force, like phototropism. Justotropism.
I didn't realize it took progressives to do the bending.
So what happens now? Does the arc boing back up like a catapult?

-- Isn't the state cutting costs, keeping teachers on the payrolls and getting more jobs? Giving things back is... the opposite of smash and grab. Unless they smashed in the windows and left a check for damages plus emotional duress.

I've been being told Walker will be indicted for months. This reminds me of when Rove was going to be frog marched any day now. Just, any day... real Soon(TM).

This kind of shit is why I can never be in a "magnanimous mood" when it comes to leftists. I say rub their faces in their own shit, then go about proving to the rest of the American people that we deserve the right to do so.

Finally, they acknowledge their faith, which readily exceeds a constrained frame of reference, and consists of little more than a deception to exploit dreams of instant gratification without consequence. This public revelation represents positive progress.

The generational progressives have betrayed their classical progressive roots. They are determined to normalize involuntary exploitation (e.g. redistributive change). They are committed to denigrate individual dignity and devalue human life. Their faith sponsors progressive corruption of individuals and society.

MadisonMan ayon kay ...

One thing I think is true about Wisconsin voters is that they are pragmatic, and fair-minded.

That's really all Nichols had to say, but he had to write a column -- how many column-inches? -- and ended up boringly bloviating. As per usual.

MadisonMan ayon kay ...

But Chip (I'm chuckling at your comment), I thought wingnuts were on the left, and moonbats were on the right? Haven't you flipped them?

When this guy, Nichols, says everybody stood tall, does he include the morons that tried to jam the vidcam back into Ann's eye or the one that threatened to make her life a living Hell or the one who just wanted her dead?

Clearly it puts Chip and Becky on a higher plane, not only intellectually but biologically than our new village idiot.

PS In the Stopped Clock Dept:

He does make a point - Mrs Kleefisch is definitely a looker. Amazing how the good guys get ladies like her and the Left gets "Nuclear" Wintour.

Fen:

Exactly. There are two desirable characteristics of individuals who place their faith in a Christian God and who recognize it as a matter of faith.

First, they defer their dignity in the post mortem and not to alphas (or mortal gods) while they live.

Second, during their mortal existence they demonstrate a remarkable grasp of the natural order (e.g. evolutionary principles). They readily distinguish between matters of philosophy (or faith) and science. Their faith engenders positive principles, including a respect for individual dignity and the intrinsic value of human life, from conception to grave.

Both points are the definition of enlightenment which recognizes that we are individually unique and substantive.

The oldest game in politics is telling people they are not satisfied and removing the king/governor will make it all better.

Since most people are seldom satisfied, the winds of revolution will blow regularly.

The difference in our Christian nation was has been its unique system of elections used to regulate peaceful changes and create prosperity and stability for owners of property. The 1864 election did the job in desperate times.

Calling that system a source of injustice is a farce proposed by murderous and evil men, like the present Destroyer-in-Chief.

"It is what Robert M. “Fighting Bob” La Follette — who took his inspiration from those first Republicans and used it to lay the markers for what would become the New Deal — referred to as “the old fight.”

That's a good trick, trying to morph Republicans of the Progressive Era into New Deal Democrats?

And always, the automatic assumption that La Follette would have supported public-sector unions.

We don't know, because there were none in his day. But Progressivism was based on the assumption that government could be tamed and reformed so as to efficiently deliver services to constituents- sort of a faith that one could put all one's eggs in the Progressive Government basket, and then get results by watching that basket really, really carefully.

I don't see how you can do that when you encourage government-employee unions to extract as much as possible from government, even while the unions demand minimal accountability.

In what way was the old Progressivism comatible with public-sector unionization?

Glen Wishard ayon kay ...

I went to that link expecting to see a picture of Bob La Follette. Score.

Except that Bob La Follette would be stunned to a see a "Progressive" movement that looked like a really bad Soviet opera.

"Where are the farmers?" he would ask.

"The who?" they would say.

Simon ayon kay ...

I would be hard-pressed to think of another movement that has done more long-term harm to the United States than "progressivism"; why would a state want to burnish its ties with such a thing?
