Interesting phrasing describing the Obama Presidency: "which is pledged to shut Guantanamo"
The trial "will take years," and the Obama administration had pledged to shut it down during the 2008 campaign.
Now it merely is pledged to do so, you know, whenever is fine.
Is the reason that Republicans don't want him tried in civilian court because it would be hard to get a conviction because of all the torture that Republicans engaged in?
OK, so shoot him.

No, it's not torture. And all the people who said it was have been exposed for the liars they are.
Thank you, Jose Rodriguez
PS How about because he made war on the US?
I get a Manson family vibe from these dudes.
They should make KSM Charlie's cellmate.
Now, that would be a reality TV show.
Cool beard.
Lincoln's April 14 assassins were tried by a military tribunal and executed on July 7. Eight defendants were eventually tried. All were convicted and four were sentenced to death. Numerous suspects were released without trial because of lack of evidence. All of this happened about two and a half months.
The only appeal was to President Johnson, who rejected all appeals. The rejections included declining Mary Seratt's request for a commutation of her death penalty. A majority of the members of the tribunal had a change of heart regarding her execution. (It took only a 5-4 majority of the tribunal to sentence death.) Johnson went with the original verdict.
Two members of Johnson's cabinet publicly opposed military tribunals are argued for civilian trials. They included Gideon Welles, whose beard has a strong resemblance to KSM's.
The Nuremburg trials, far more complex and involving hundreds of defendants, took a couple of years.
The wheels of justice grind much more slowly these days, even where domestic politics are not involved. In this case the political overlay has been amazing. It does not reflect well on us.
David, I think what it reflects is straight up schizophrenia. Viewed from the outside the United States must appear to be a country with two distinct fairly reliable somewhat predictable personalities that switch back and forth for prominence in its outward expression. So, insane.
For unbelievable speed, you just can't beat the prosecution of the dude who tried to kill FDR, before he was inaugurated. FDR was in Miami and a poorly prepared assassin cranks out 5 shots, none of which hits FDR, one of which mortally wounds Anton Cermak, Mayor of Chicago. The shooting takes place on February 15th, Cermak lingers and dies on March 6th. Charges are bumped to First Degree Murder, and the assassin pleads guilty and asks for the electric chair, which request was granted on March 20th.
In by 9, out by 5. If only...
Breakdown of shared assumptions and values, Chip, a kind of schizophrenia. It may work itself out over time. You could live to see that. I won't.
I would feet so much better if Eric Holder was handling the prosecution.

Is that why Bush is afraid to travel to Europe?
Is that why the CIA destroyed tapes showing water-boarding to try to avoid prosecution?
So the man who claims to have personally murdered Daniel Pearl is demanding fairness.
So the man who claims to have personally murdered Daniel Pearl is demanding fairness.
No, our Constitution and American values are demanding fairness.

========================
I think any Euro nation that succumbs to the pleas of any Lefty /ACLU type lawyer activists and grabs Clinton(rendition), Bush (Islamoid interrogations), or Obama (summary execution of Islamoid terrorists) or Putin (oppression of the Noble Chechen Freedom Fighters) - will deeply regret it.
Russia and America are not Chile, at the far end of the globe and unable to project power.
I think it would be a fine occasion to slap down the weak Euro nation that tries it, or stand by and let Russia do it. Put the cheese-eaters in their place.
The general wisdom is the Euros are smart enough to realize that if they mess around that way, a couple hundred Russian or American cruise missiles might hit them. (The serving President or PM that orders the strike would get a 20 point boost in the polls). And lord help the weak sisters of they seize Chinese officials. That would go even worse for them.
That makes the Euro-Lefty and Progressive Jewish NYC activist lawyer threat of "Off to The Hague, in irons...Rule Of Law!!" - a hollow threat. Only said amongst themselves to delude themselves that their strident advocacy matters in the slightest.
Sort of like the Islamoid threat that in the name of justice they will "Mercilessly Destroy all the Infidels!" Or the NORK threat that all capitalist running dogs will soon die at the hands of the Heroic People's Forces...
Ah hell, just drop him out of a plane over the ocean like OBL. Don't even bother with shooting him, just push him out the back door at 10,000 feet.
Then he can refuse all the questions he wants.
I have to agree with Andy R on this one. I know , hard to believe , but he did get one right. In fact, since it is impossible for KSM to ever get a fair trial that would satisfy both sides I think we should just lock him up in protective custody for ever. On a diet of BLT's hold the LT, intil he dies of a coronary.
