Marty: Wait a minute, Doc. Are you telling me that you built a time machine? Dr.Brown: The way I see it, if you're gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?
Which make this car a collector's item, an anachronism, and a political statement.
Or, just found the damned thing and thought it would be weird.
Eagleton was on the "the ticket" for less than a week, I think.
So, they printed up a bunch of these things. Said, oops, send them to our secret DNC warehouse in sleepy Madison Wisconsin. And there they slept, until some VW drivin' fellow traveler happened upon them, snagged one, and achieved immortality.
Voted for mcGovern in my first election. Hated Nixon....
PS: He did 35 missions in a B-24 over Germany. The casualty rate for bomber crews was higher than grunts in infantry battalions. The upside was warm cots and hot meals.
Just returned from a happy hour at the Oval Room with the Committee to Re-elect the POTUS.
They are scared. There is a belief that Romney will have the best VP.
Here is what I heard:
- Rubio will not be selected. In one word: Palin. - Ditto for Jindal and Martinez. - Ryan will not be selected. WI has never been to GOP since early 1980s. Does not help. He is better in House for the GOP leadership. -McDonnell is good but is too conservative. VA will go for GOP anyway. He does not help women/minorities. - Perry, Newt, Rick: Do not make me laugh.
So, why is the Committee to Re-elect scared?
Hint: The state that is the model for demographers. It is not Colorado. What is it?
Think!
O-H-I-O!
Portman is the VP. He has distinguished career. He is a Gentleman. He will get OH and other midwest states.
Romney-Portman is feared. So, expect the Chicago HQ to start on it. -
Plus, OH gov. is GOP. So, the seat will remain GOP. Also, Portman is in the Senate and so he can outwit Biden in the debates. Portman has done more in his short time in Senate than Obama. He also did other work in House, trade, etc.
I am convinced that the Committee to Re-elect the POTUS is rightfully scared of Romney/Portman.
I agree that we didn't need a VP who had been hooked up to jumper cables, but what about the present VP? Biden at one heartbeat away... should be a very strong point in the campaign, and Romney can make it best by selecting a VP candidate who will make Biden look like the foolish ass he is, in their single debate.
A museum piece. The Eagleton business was a real mess. Shriver did the country a big favor by stepping into the breach when no one else would. According to Arthur Schlesinger's personal diary, the entire McGovern family voted for Jerry Ford. Guess no one could stand Carter.
Portman's a budget guy. Romney could do worse. I'd be happy with Ryan, too, but for now I prefer he stay where he is. Either of these guys would wipe the floor with Biden. I look forward to the VP debate. I hope someone asks Joe about gas prices.
Portman was in George W. Bush's admin, if Romney is smart he'll be looking for a fresh face and stay clear of Veeps with any taint from 08.
I still say the short list is Rubio, Martinez and Ryan, in that order. Rubio or Martinez gives the GOP a shot at increasing their share of the Hispanic vote for the next generation, while also giving them cover on tougher immigration policies. Rubio is the stronger candidate, but if they think they need to appeal to women - and if NM and CO look wobbly - they're more likely to tap Martinez.
But if Romney is feeling confident, and the polls show FL, CO and NM are all likely to be safely GOP regardless of the pick, Ryan could rise to the top. I think he's the one Romney really wants to pick, because he would be such an articulate, informed and yet likable and moderate-sounding attack dog. He would eviscerate Obama's record daily and turn Biden into even more of a stuttering old fool than he normally is. Would he put WI in play for the GOP? You bet; Sconnies have never had one of their own on a national ticket (have they?), and they would leap at the chance to vote for a Badger. Live here for a while, and you'll realize WI is a pretty parochial place. Oh yeah, Ryan also puts Iowa in play, since he represents a southern WI district and it's more a swing state anyway.
No Ann, you can't have a moment's peace because we elected Obama. You don't get to elect a guy who is a community rabble-rouser and then act surprised that the rabble is roused.
This bumper sticker is a perfect statement of the state of today's Democratic Party. Stuck in the distant past. And appropriately focused on the moment in political history when control of the party shifted from the old FDR/Truman/JFK/LBJ/Humphrey wing to the radical/communist/socialist Henry Wallace (McGovern was his protege) wing that controls it today.

That person should have his head examined. This is not 1972!
Wasn't Eagleton the one kicked off the ticked because he had used "shock therapy"?
VW
Thomas Eagleton, run some current through him and he begins to look like Richard Santorum.
Marty: Wait a minute, Doc. Are you telling me that you built a time machine?
Dr.Brown: The way I see it, if you're gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?
That bumper sticker is shock therapy.
Maybe it's time to put my Virginia Slade for Congress bumper sticker on the car.
I'm 1000% sure that bumper sticker didn't exist for very long. Should be McGovern-Shriver.
I have two McGovern/Eagleton buttons from 1972: link
He probably goes to bed humming, "Imagine", too.

Was that a 40-year-old car? Or did somebody put an old bumper sticker on a new car?
You can get one on ebay. This one is pasted on top of a dark blue one.
I'm guessing the dark blue one was Obama 08.
Another disenchanted hoper.
^^ the plot thickens
McGovern, such a great father that he neglected his own daughter so she died a homeless junkie in a snowbank in Madison.

That's just crazy. Shocking really.

I'll cut pacifists that win the DFC some slack...
Look Forward, they always say. Stop living in the past, they always say.

I like Romney/Portman. Rob Portman would make a good president.

They should be scared. The Democratic competition set the bar really low.
MisGovern / Biden 2008

Portman's in his first year in the Senate. Like a lot of Republicans, his time will be 2020.
"I'm still shocked."

Does Portman want it?
Romney/Portman.
OK, I guess. Not much name recognition.
But I would volunteer for the campaign if it was Natalie Portman.
I was about to say, wasn't Portman briefly the DCI, but that was Porter Gossman, or something like that.
I guess that's a previous-generation Jetta wagon, though the photo angle gives it the overly tall greenhouse of a Range Rover.

Liberals/progressives/socialists/Democrats are the true "reactionaries".
It's both funny and sad at the same time.

No. They went to the trouble of putting it on a newer car. They either saved the sticker or had it made.
Which is both funny and sad.
