Remember that television show "Don't Eat the Daisies?" It was about a college professor's family. The wife used to be his student. That show would not be possible today.

There are a lot of professors in the universities who are married to former students. It's hard to start a new policy like this when it casts aspersions on real marriages of actual professors!
This idea of professors using students as their dating pool! But they have. I can't imagine getting into that frame of mine, myself. And I was a single professor for 20 years.
@Althouse, Yes but you had to wait for the invention of the internet to get hitched again.
On a serious note, most of these rules are far too sweeping. They should concentrate on the authority the faculty member has over the student. Why shouldn't a chemistry professor be able to date a history student?
John Jay Faculty Senate President Karen Kaplowitz said stricter rules will protect vulnerable co-eds and prevent them from trading steamy extra-curriculars for easy A’s.
Protect our vulnerable coeds!
Who would never, ever lodge a false charge of harassment to get a disliked prof in trouble!
There seems to be a fairly bright line b/w sex with students in a prof's class and just sex. Also, there seems to be another obvious line b/w undergrads and post-grads.
But I'm so worried about Our Vulnerable Coeds that I think they should only attend women's colleges with all-female faculty. Cuz only hetero sex is a tool of oppression.
It's a comment revealing of a certain cast of mind. No one is trying to ban "love," they are banning (or delaying) actions. Apparently it doesn't occur to them that a thought can be had without being acted on.
It's simple. Only ban the non-love relationships. Have a Love Panel that can certify that you are in love. It could be confidential. Then fuck like rabbits for a year until your love license renewal comes up.
Is it OK if you wait until the semester is over and then hit on her? This, depending on their relative ages and marital status, doesn't sound so scandalous. TA's have such meagre lives. Allow them a few crumbs.
Aren't there sexual harassment policies already in place that deal with this? As for the good that banning does find the study that introduced the concept of money to monkeys and see how soon after money was traded for sex.

The problem is much deeper than mere sexual harassment. Certain women can "sleep" their way to good grades with lecherous professors, unfair in an academically competitive environment such as law school. There were several such women at my law school (30+ years ago). One pole vaulted from bottom half to top ten. Lots of grousing and gnashing of teeth.
Why aren't we worried about the sensibilities of tender young men (what is the male version of coed?) who might find themselves seduced by the grade power of female professors? Can a male professor get his reputation/job/life back after he's falsely accused of rape by a really enterprising young coed? Does that issue even come up when the professor is a female?
If my employer can prevent me from dating our vendors, why can't it prevent me from dating our customers? Seems professional to me, and it would go a long way into making the college more professional.

Well, at least that settles the matter for CUNY. CUNY ended its open admissions policy in 1999, but it's still a long, long way from the "academically competitive environment" it once was.
Why assume the professors are lecherous older men? I had professors, men and women, who were only a few years older than I. Moreover, not all students are nineteen.
Students should not be allowed to manipulate their instructors with sex, and vice versa. Students are not there to screw the staff. Instructors are not there to boink their students. It isn't professional in the least to sleep with students, regardless of what their major is.
If you can't get punani any other way than to date the paying customers who most likely can't buy you as drink due to their age, you are a sad, sad person.

As did Calista?
Raise the age of consent to 40.
What, pray tell, were her grades under said prof?
Nah, nothing untoward could happen.

I wonder if the New York Post couldn't find any female professors who objected to this or if they just didn't bother to try.

I told you guys!
Free birth control for co-eds is what every red blooded Phd should support, and go ahead and make it mandatory for the co-eds.

Oh, wait! It's about love!?
Never mind.
