Great idea. A protest itself is a lot like a reality show anyway. There's a lot posing and performing for cameras. With MTV involved, there will be better editing and more poking into the details of the motivations of individuals and the interpersonal friction. As they say on in the "Real World" introduction: find out what happens... when people stop being polite... and start getting real. Scoff if you like, but I bet it's more real than what we get in the news.
And, MTV? If you want some protest vibe for your show, how about "Real World Madison"?

OWS is issuing its own casting calls: friends in New Orleans remarked that when the protest marched through Jackson Square last weekend there was only a cadre of 4 or 5 organizers with the balance of the group made up of the readily identifiable homeless people of the neighborhood obviously incented to hold a sign and walk a few blocks for their reward.
"but I bet it's more real than what we get in the news."
Like that's a high bar to clear. "Fake but accurate" is their philosophy.
um...isn't MTV part of a corporation?
Scoff if you like, but I bet it's more real than what we get in the news.
Scoff I won't, but MTV has ulterior motives. Making money is a motive. If they can make money off this, fine. I'm talking ulterior motives. As such, it probably won't be all that real.
And the media continues its role as the agit-prop arm of the Democrat party.
OWS-ies.
I'll take them seriously when they throw away their NorthFace gear purchased from REI, and sleep in hand knitted and hand woven gear, made from hand spun threads.
Anything less is a complete sell-out.
Well, we now have 1 OWS arrest for exposing himself to children and one reported rape.
This movement is so, like, popular.
Roll cameras MTV!
Isn't the ethos of OWS that there should be no stratification in society, especially within the OWS ranks?
Won't the selection of a cast, by a corporation no less, bring to the surface many of the youthful resentments that are fueling the OWS demonstrations?
Winners and losers, within the OWS ranks.
Left to its own devices, I suspect the cast would become ostracized from the rest of the protesters, something MTV could probably edit over.
But as a general trend, as winter comes, I predict OWS will become increasingly less organic and more professional in that "sponsorship" will be the key to longevity.
This movement is nothing. Nothing i tell you! Somebody LISTEN TO ME!!!!

Reinforcing yet again why I don't watch reality shows or much television at all.
Winter is coming. And I hope it is soon.

garbage,
this "movement" is so influential I wish there was a network that would broacast them 24X7.
Really, I think it would be great.
I had an influential movement this morning.
From little red wagon to little red book. Perhaps it's part of their maturation maturation process. At any rate, it's more a pose than a position. They're not truly there to protest, but rather to celebrate their significance, commitment, ideals, and general all around special goodness.....In America, there has always been a disturbing overlap between the leisure class and the revolutionary class.
this "movement" is so influential I wish there was a network that would broacast them 24X7.
Kind of like Fox did with the Tea Party rallies.
Well, I suppose having sex on police cars might be better to watch than people relieving themselves on them.
Maybe.

Can't remember when they were on 24x7.
garage must have DVRed them and run them non-stop.
The OWS should be jumping for joy. Goldman Sachs stock is down 38.9% ytd and BoA is down 49.9% ytd.
Serves those capitalist pig shareholders right!
Now pay my tuition!!!!
Seriously garage, if you really want to see this movement truly go somewhere then you must really have a penchant for a dystopian America.
They can't even articulate a coherent message other than life isn't fair!
They don't have a message!
The message is horrible!
With apologies to Dan Reeder, His song really breaks down the OWS theme.
http://danreeder.bandcamp.com/track/everybody-wants-a-cookie
except they hate the folks that do the baking!
OWS Girls Gone Wild, Playboy: the Girls of OWS, The SI OWS swimsuit edition, OWS of Victoria's Secret...
What is the message? I hear a lot of demands, pretty much the same kind if demands you hear from 8 year olds but for a serious political movement what is it? Give us more corporate money? Free education, healthcare and retirement? Top 1% should pay all the taxes?
All your bases are belong to us?
What's the message garage or do I need a decoder ring?
What's the message garage or do I need a decoder ring?
Probably several, I imagine many people show up for different reasons. I saw a few "Impeach Obama" signs yesterday, so who knows? I would say if there is one theme, it's that they want to change the system.
What's the message garage or do I need a decoder ring?
D-O-N-T-F-O-R-G-E-T-T-O-D-R-I-N-K-Y-O-U-R-O-V-A-L-T-I-N-E
I would say if there is one theme, it's that they want to change the system.
Yes?
But, to what? They have no ideas. No concepts of what to come, consequences, alternatives.....nothing.
"... I would say if there is one theme, it's that they want to change the system..."
Oh good. Nothing abstract about that.
Aren't there any OWS protest sites near you in IN? Maybe if you're that curious you could to one of their general assemblies and find out. I don't think any two cities are exactly the same.
The one here in STL is, for every day except for the very first weekend, a joke.
However, I fully expect the usual suspects to converge on us tonight for game 1. From what I can see so far, the city isn't fucking around security-wise. It was nowhere near this tight the last time we won in '06. That's 2006, not 1906 for you Cub fans out there.
(snicker)
"... Aren't there any OWS protest sites near you in IN?.."
Not to my knowledge. I mean Indy has its fair share of hippies but by Madison standards probably not too energetic. I haven't seen anything in the local news.
The last time we had a big protest was when Marion county jacked up property taxes.
"... That's 2006, not 1906 for you Cub fans out there..."
Dude...that's simply uncalled for. Funny as hell though!
What will be interesting to see is the dynamic that plays out when the target audience (young folk, I guess) watches this new show, and how their working parents chime in with opinions on the occupiers' tactics, beliefs, etc.
In other words, probably most young kids aren't paying much attention to OWS, but as a TV show, it will get its message out more effectively. How will it be processed?
it will get its message out more effectively. How will it be processed?
What message?
I mean if the complaint is DC being too cozy with Wall Street does it just mean banker and financial types or say, GM and the unions? How about certain energy companies that get guaranteed loans? Or public sector unions where government relationships are just as cozy?
Is the rich paying their fair share mean footing 70%, 80% of the tax revenue? All of it? Are these protestors with their ipads, iPhones, laptops really think they're poor?
If the message is different from city to city then that's the definition of incoherence.
Imagine if this happened at a Tea Party rally:
City officials said Tuesday they may have to shut down the Occupy Oakland tent city in coming days because it is attracting rats, alcohol and illegal drug use…
This comes on the heels of increasing reports of illegal drug and alcohol abuse, fighting, and sexual harassment in and around the camp of about 100 tents, Boyd said.
Or this:
protesters got fed up with 27-year-old Dave Park, who frequently showed up drunk to Zuccotti Park and allegedly groped several women, protesters said.
After repeated incidents and failed intervention attempts by Occupy Wall Street’s security team, the protesters finally went to the NYPD for help in removing Park, according to Paul Isaac, a member of the security team.
And their MO is quite illuminating:
At a recent meeting of Occupy Wall Street’s nonviolent conflict de-escalation group, those present discouraged protesters from going to police unless absolutely necessary.
These leftists are lovely people.
Just lovely.
Jay said: "...Occupy Wall Street’s security team..."
Really?!? Quite the mental image there.
@ Scott: Wall Street greed and sharing the wealth, I guess. I haven't been paying that much attention. One of my main points was that the target audience would be more readily reached through reality TV. The other was to wonder if parents and others would point out shortcomings to these ideas.
Hard to believe they're doing this with people in the streets protesting them:
The Federal Reserve and Bank of America Initiate a Coup to Dump Billions of Dollars of Losses on the American Taxpayer
"... Hard to believe they're doing this with people in the streets protesting them:.."
Are they aware the FDIC is funded by premiums paid by the banks?
Privatize the profits and socialize the losses.
I didn't see your comment at 3:44. But yes they do pay the fees, which are just passed onto us.
No no...don't so quick to judge now. I can see this!! Only MTV isn't taking it nearly far enough.
OWS: The Movie!

Big Foot as Mrs. Obummer

Ewoks as the OWS protestors
and Co-Starring a Block of Wood as Vice President Bite'em.

I'd pay to see it...not.
Ok new rules are that businesses cannot pass costs off to the consumer.
You have to admit BoA appears clueless. First a $5 debit card usage fee. Next lay off 30,000 workers. Then give two top execs 11 million golden parachutes. Whoever still banks with BofA gets what they deserve.
"Whoever still banks with BofA gets what they deserve."
Let the market decide! Your getting there garage. I see definite progress.
So MTV wants to do a real world..OWS? Let's see. A bunch of young slackers, living in someone else's house, fed and entertainment and booze paid for by someone else. And get paid to participate. Are we sure MTV didn't start this weeks ago?
I agree garage! My God there should be laws against dumb business practices.
The President garage is going to vote for:
“Obama has brought in more money from employees of banks, hedge funds and other financial service companies than all of the GOP candidates combined, according to a Washington Post analysis of contribution data.”
Don't worry garbage, you'll come up with some lame, incoherent reasoning to vote for Obama.

You voted for the President who bailed out these banks.
Also lost on you: get the government out of the financial sector and this wouldn't happen.
