"Lots of photos of Perry having nothing whatsoever to do with this story, and not a single one of the rock. Well done, WP!"

The first comment at a Washington Post article about how Rick Perry, early in his career, used to host events at a hunting camp where there was a rock that had the word "Niggerhead" painted on it.
Ranchers who once grazed cattle on the 1,070-acre parcel on the Clear Fork of the Brazos River called it by that name well before Perry and his father, Ray, began hunting there in the early 1980s. There is no definitive account of when the rock first appeared on the property. In an earlier time, the name on the rock was often given to mountains and creeks and rock outcroppings across the country. Over the years, civil rights groups and government agencies have had some success changing those and other racially offensive names that dotted the nation’s maps.
Does this have anything to do with Rick Perry (who, asked about the rock, said the word is an "offensive name that has no place in the modern world")? Well, yes, if you're inclined to think that Perry's rural Texas background has bred something nasty into him:
Perry has spoken often about how his upbringing in this sparsely populated farming community influenced his conservatism. He has rarely, if ever, discussed what it was like growing up amid segregation in an area where blacks were a tiny fraction of the population.
So what's he hiding, eh?

Reading on, we see that — according to Perry — Perry's father leased the property in 1983, and the first thing he did was paint over the word on the rock. And every time Perry saw the rock, it was painted over. But WaPo found 7 individuals who say they remember seeing the name on the rock during the time when Perry's father's name was on the lease. And:
Longtime hunters, cowboys and ranchers said this particular place was known by that name as long as they could remember, and still is.

“The cowboys, when they were gathering cattle, they’d say they’re going to the Matthews or Niggerhead or the Nail” pastures, said Bill Reed, a distributor for Coors beer in nearby Abilene who used to lease a hunting parcel adjacent to the Perrys’. “Those were all names. Nobody thought anything about it.”...

“You know, Texas is a little different — you go where it’s comfortable,” Reed said. “. . . It would have been one thing if [the Perrys] had named it, but they didn’t. So, it’s basically a figure of speech as far as most people are concerned. No one thought anything about it.”
No one thought anything about it. Those who are looking for a racial issue to play know how to jump on a phrase like that. Okay, then, let him who is without sin cast the first rock.

Easy Target!

If I had to guess? The Washington Post (all the elites, and Obama), are all hoping "Jim" Perry wins the nomination crown.

Then we can spend our time guessing if on election day he gets 47% of the vote. (Like McCain.) Or, he gets less.

Sometimes the GOP just loves running for 3rd place. Which "could" happen if Independent, as crazy as Ross Perot ... enters IN.

Let's say it's Trump. Odds are then that he'd pick Sarah Palin for his veep, no?

This is a very serious argument against Perry. It changed my vote for ever! I will never ever vote for a Texan again, or any man, or any white person, or hunter, or anyone who owns a rock of any kind. Principles matter more than politics.

Niggerhead is the old name for a type of flower and vegetation formation. Probably because of the fuzzy texture of the formation.

Also for a certain type of rock formation. "an antiquated term for a large round rock sticking up from the surface of a logging road, used by loggers and log truck drivers in the Pacific Northwest". I've heard the term used by some of the old timers. You just wince and move on. There is no point in making a big deal about it. The old timers will fade away and so will the terms.

Old and antiquated terms. Things that used to be common are now offensive or politically incorrect.

Thus culture changes, slowly. Alpha Liberal evidently wants to hold Perry responsible for history, culture and expects hold him to personally repsonsible for the culture of the 1800's.

No, just for the signage on the hunting camp he used in the 1980s and 1990s. No need to go back to the 1800s. But yes, culture changes, sometimes for the better. One can generally thank the social liberals of a given era for that.

But it was Bill Clinton who said of Obama's meteoric political rise:

"In 1992 he'd have been ordered to bring me a cup of coffee."

Some white men think they'r superior.

IF this story has a motive it is to point out the obvious. Texas, itself, is DIVIDED into 5 parts. (I think two of them are Mexican. One is Black. And, what's left over belongs to white people.)

Texas is big. It contains a variety of cultures. Where you're gonna find good barbecue, you're not going to find tortillas.

So, there's this "rock."

And, the property Perry's dad leased way back in the early 1980's ... came with this "rock" already there.

Just in case you got to Texas, and got lost. You could ask white people for directions to "the rock."

You'd have a gun in your pickup. The main feature of Perry's farm was to shoot animals.

Meanwhile, most cowboys couldn't read. So, they'd be told: "Keep riding." Eventually, you'll come to a rock that has alphabet letters painted on it."

The Libs of MA changed the name of a town on Martha's Vineyard from "Gay Head" to "Aquinnah". The original name referred to the colorful (gay) cliffs visible from sea, and had been around for a few hundred years. The new term was plucked from a random jumble of "Native American" place names.

"He claims they painted over the rock. Why didn't they rename the parcel entirely?"

Perry and his father didn't own the parcel. They had a "hunting lease" on the property which gave them access to the land for hunting purposes only. A rancher still owned and used the land for cattle. The Perrys didn't have the right or power to rename the parcel.

bagoh20 said...

Anyone in the West and Upper Midwest knows that "squaw" is a politically incorrect term (allegedly, a term for woman's genitals), and the PC police have been busily changing the many, many place names that have had the word "squaw" in them for over a century. Anyone associated with the word "squaw" is obviously a racist.

But look what we have from July 23, 2003!

The guest list for the wedding might have doubled as a San Francisco summit of the rich, the political and the famous.

To Squaw Valley came Paul and Rep. Nancy Pelosi; Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown and his girlfriend, Gap executive Ann Gust; philanthropists Ann and Gordon Getty; Detroit Lions coach Steve Mariucci and his wife, Gayle; Olympic ski medalist Jonny Moseley; actress Donna Mills; retired Judge Bill Newsom; Supervisor Gavin Newsom and his wife, Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom; Democratic Party donor George Marcus and his wife, Judy; and nearly 400 other guests.

I guess that Jerry Brown and Nancy Pelosi are racist Native American-haters for voluntarily attending an event in a location with a racial slur. And this was less than ten years ago, not decades ago...

Paddy O said...

"One can generally thank the social liberals of a given era for that."

This is an interesting comment, because while true it's also misleading. Because it equates the social liberals of our era with those in the past. But they were not and are not equivalent.

Positions on social causes don't have a political party allegiance and far too often social liberating positions get tagged with loaded political terms that are themselves misleading.

Like abortion. Social liberals now want to protect a woman's choice. The conservatives now, however, want to protect unborn babies. Which is more socially liberating? The former is about personal gain and against a broader form of liberation, that of letting the most defenseless live out their lives.

Which matches the slavery issue. Republicans were anti-slavery. The Christian College I went to was founded on strict abolitionist positions and the first president was very active in abolitionist causes. But he was a social conservative in almost every modern respect. But he was absolutely for a liberating social agenda.

Obama and Democrats want the mantle of Civil Rights era social liberating agendas, but they are actively, repressively, restricting freedom in a lot of ways. They rescind the call to not judge based on the color of skin, but emphasize skin color and racist artifacts from bygone eras in order to incite racial combativeness.

Paddy, here's the thing. The Republicans and Democrats of the 19th century were different from the Rs and Ds of today. Because they existed in very different points in time.

You need to reach awfully far back to ding the Democrats on race! Ha!

OTOH, the Democratic Party had an internal fight over racism and ejected racist southern Democrats at the 1964 convention. It was a big fight and people in favor of racism literally walked out of the Democratic Party.

People who left the Democratic Party that year and in the years to follow mostly went to the Republican Party. After all, the Republican Party has a racist Southern Strategy focused on recruiting those people.

These days it is Republicans who shout down and deny any mention of race. Unless it's allegedly against whites.

Like abortion. Social liberals now want to protect a woman's choice. The conservatives now, however, want to protect unborn babies. Which is more socially liberating?

The socially liberal position. Notwithstanding the views of a few otherwise fairly progressive Jesuits, it's no accident that the demographic pool for the hardcore anti-abortion faction tends to overlap with the pool that was pro-segregation in the 50s and 60s and is anti-gay and otherwise retrograde now. Once again, social liberalism for the win - regardless of political party.

A party that could accept Robert Byrd's much more significant gestures of racism and supposed statements of regret, seems like it has no place to stand upon this rock of Perry's parents.

It liberals like you who think we need to change the truth so that the poor weak Black people can get though the day.

Not surprisingly, it's also your party that believes they need to be helped with every part of their lives even down to feeding themselves, because they are not up to it IN 2011.

Conservative respect them enough to say they are equal and can be treated like adults.

Racism is alive and well in the Democratic party. In fact it's their foundation. The day Blacks stop believing the lie, the Dems will be done. It's coming, maybe soon.

Paddy O said...

The socially liberal position is the most liberating on abortion?

How do you see a priority of self-gain that specifically destroys the life of another as the ultimately liberating position?

How? By entirely negating the very identity of those who suffer at the hands of this selfish choice. Which is exactly the arguments made 150 years ago.

It's no accident that the demographic pool for the hardcore pro-abortion faction tends to overlap with the pool of people who were pro-slavery.

It's also no accident that the demographic pool for the hardcore anti-abortion faction tends to overlap with the pool of people who were anti-slavery.

When you say 'liberal' you are equating positions with distinct political parties. Socially liberating is much more politically neutral and historically accurate.

He knew the word was bad or at least unwise, so where somebody had painted the name on a rock, he painted over it (unless Rick Perry is lying about that). In the South Carolina Low Country, near Beaufort, there is a creek called "Nigger Head Creek" The maps don't use the name but many locals, black and white, still do.

Likely it got that name after the 1739 Stono Slave Rebellion. In 1739 a group of slaves rebelled, and killed over 20 whites on their way south, towards Spanish Florida, where they could be free. The local militia caught them and after a pitched battle, the surviving rebels surrendered. A trial was held on the spot, and the majority of the slaves were convicted and sentenced to death. (Remarkably some were actually acquitted.)

The whites severed the heads of several rebels and placed them on stakes at visible points as a warning.

The warning was effective enough that it is remembered 270 years later.

This has nothing to do with Rick Perry either, but I thought I would share the story.

Er, no, the hardcore pro-abortion faction isn't largely composed of socially conservative white Southerners, who tended to be the hardcore pro-slavery group. Nice try.

When you say 'liberal' you are equating positions with distinct political parties. Socially liberating is much more politically neutral and historically accurate.

The term "social liberalism" is pretty well-known one among people who discuss political ideology in the US and it isn't linked to only one party. That's why you read about pro-choice Republicans being described as economically conservative and socially liberal. Sorry if you don't like the terminology, but that's how the terms are generally used.

And it will continue to exist because I submit it is ingrained in our nature which is not going to be changed by fiat

And just think, when we sometimes call each other those names — it's fun!

gadfly said...

So if Martin Luther King had named the rock or even painted the name upon it - there would be no offense as is the case when blacks call each other "Niggers."

Today's liberals believe that no social standard, other than the ones they believe in, were ever acceptable common forms of the language and human interaction in the past.

But without even a blush, the Great American (now racist) author, Samuel L. Clemons aka Mark Twain, long before writing about a runaway slave named "Nigger Jim," had this to say in 1853:

“I reckon I had better black my face, for in these Eastern states niggers are considerably better than white people”

Paddy O said...

"Nice try."

Indeed it was.

And I note again that it's weird arguing the pro-abortion position is more liberating.

Words may be in common use, but that common use often become distorting and deceptive. Liberals have very little interest in liberating on many issues.

Common parlance should be confronted when it is a tool for propaganda.

Judith said...

I grew up in the old Jim Crow South. Among my white peers the polite term for blacks was "colored" but "nigger" was also used casually. It's difficult to understand today, but (to us at least)whether it was pejorative or not depended on the context. "Call the nigger janitor" or "pass the nigger toes" (Brazil nuts) was neutral, while "that lazy nigger" was strongly pejorative. I don't know how blacks saw it at the time, but to us the word itself didn't become exclusively pejorative until the Civil Rights era. It was then that we realized that blacks had come to consider the term deeply offensive no matter the obliviousness of our intentions--so, for the most part, we quit using it. Thus I can understand the vestigial survival of a land feature "Niggerhead" and also how some of the locals accepted it so casually.

So.... you present Perry's version as exculpating for Perry? Even those others there disagree? This is logic?

Seems to be the Post's job to prove it was there and that it is relevant to today.

They failed on both accounts.

The whole account goes to character. Perry used land named and labeled as "Niggerhead." That says a lot about him. It speaks volumes.

So when Democrats call a piece of land something offensive, it can never be used by anybody else ever again?

Did PERRY call it that? No? Then how the heck is it relevant? His dad covered it up when he controlled the land. End of story. Some hunters claim they saw it --- but seem really vague as to WHEN they saw it.

And was that the official term for the land? I couldn't guarantee the land my home is on wasn't called something bad at some point in the past. How would I ever find this out?

How could anyone accept this self-serving, halo-polishing, sanitized account from Perry?

Evidence to the contrary seems lacking.

You need to reach awfully far back to ding the Democrats on race! Ha!

It's not conservatives who think blacks can't successfully get a photo ID either because they're too poor or stupid to do so. That's a TOTALLY progressive notion.

And aren't Democrats still inordinately fond of a man who referred to NYC as "Hymietown"?

Judith - the word itself didn't become exclusively pejorative until the Civil Rights era. It was then that we realized that blacks had come to consider the term deeply offensive no matter the obliviousness of our intentions--so, for the most part, we quit using it...

The problem of course is while black activists, liberals, and progressive jews of the media claimed it was deeply offensive and whites pretty much consigned it to a crude vulgarism not used in polite society - "nigger" survived and flourished in the black community.

Part and parcel of black culture and black vernacular.

If you ask any person under 50 in America where and when they 1st heard the word "nigger", or any immigrant - odds are the answer will be "black youths saying it" and "in school, on the street".

Anytime you see a white liberal or progressive jewish pundit or black NAACP official saying the "N-word" is so hurtful and offensive that it reduces blacks to piles of quivering, forever emotionally scarred plotoplasm, you have to laugh. "Tell it to the black youth and rappers and adult thugs". When they say the utterance of the word should be a firing offense, a school expulsion offense, even criminalized...you have to laugh even harder at the liberal, progressive jew, angry black..."Aren't there already too many blacks in jail, unemployed, or who have dropped out of school"...

Then they sputter and say they meant "saying nigger should be banned for everyone but blacks"

Actually, it's likely that he has. But I suspect that J approached Hegel just as he does everything else in his life - angry, combative, paranoiac, and so on. So I doubt that J truly appreciated nor in any way understood Hegel. Instead J just tortured some of Hegel's ideas into something that agrees with his view of the world.

Someone in another thread has already noted some of the tells that indicate that J is mentally ill. There should be some kind of real world intervention before he goes over the edge in some way, but I suspect there is no one still left in his life who cares.

There is nothing anyone here can do for him, leaving the best option as just ignoring him. At any rate, J shouldn't be taunted. He obviously can't handle it and it's likely doing a lot of further harm to a already teetering personality.

In a locker room a week ago a retired architect was mentioning that the Capitol building in Austin was 'built for nothing.' This had to do that the payment, at least for the stone, was state disposition of 5 counties out in West Texas, "worthless land." It was there that Perry's father raised the family as, I think, tenant farmers. There may have been cotton but I doubt it was what might termed "high cotton." So he gets a couple of nickels to rub together and joins the aristocracy, that is leasing at least for hunting purposes some other land. Having a little vacation, ooh. To come across land with a name such as it was reflects some appreciation as others have said to the top of head physiognomy of black people as it is compared to the land and also a kind of wry, 'get back to where you belong' statement to the visitors. In other words like a person enjoying the song 'You aint nothing but a hound dog' it's to some extent a self depreciating statement of the visitor to this 'worthless land.'

No vacations are allowed however from those who would use the 'w word.' I refer here to those who would use racial wedge words to divide and conquer. In contrast to President Ford, H. Cain has just jumped up on the desk and grinned, 'The long national nightmare is not over. It has only just begun.' Uhh, really and have you done this before. Obama does this so much better than you do. He was doing something to take it to a refractory period. I thought maybe a conservative black president would really show some nice diversity. Well, apparently my great-grandfather hated the Coulsons (I've never known why), and wanted everybody to call it the Wilcox place instead, after his last name.

130 years later, do you know what everyone calls it? The Coulson place. Heck, even my family calls it that. It's just the way it works.
