"I don't think any of this is a risk that's above and beyond what we do on a daily basis. It's part of the job. It's an inherent danger to be a police officer. It's an inherent danger to be a bicycle officer. But the five in a month is obviously more than we'd like to see any time."

Riding a bike in traffic is dangerous. A least a bike cop can shoot the driver who gets out of control. The rest of us are usally not packin!
I'm not afraid to say that running over a cop after a few beers is probably a bad move, but it's just a theory.
bagoh20, only if you get caught!
Oh wait, this is not The Agitator, my bad!
Do the have sirens and flashing blue lights? If not, it's no wonder they get no respect.
Do they bike patrol in winter?
I appreciate the problem, but it just isn't as dashing as "Adam-12".
Yeah, of course it's hazardous. And I suspect more humble. And harder work.
Good for them for doing it.
They should pull a little red wagon with lights and stuff. How about a little paddy wagon?
Wow, officer squishy talks about danger. Try riding with a banana seat donut eater.
For various reasons, cops tend to vist the ER at the drop of the hat.
The ideas that the bikes are both well-lighted and that being on a bike makes it easier to sneak up on people seems contradictory to me.
I think I understand what they mean, it just is worded oddly.
Is it just a fluke that there are more accidents than last year or could it be that people who have come in from out of state for the protests are unfamiliar with the area and are more focused on finding their way than they are with what is around them? The hit-and-runs, not the people they caught.
I'd like to have a Glock and a license to kill when I am out riding. The snowbirds are starting to return to FL and the risk to bicyclists increases exponentially.

Milwaukee is 90 miles (and a million light years) away from Madison.
Milwaukee appears to have the same problem as bicycle police in my city. While they may have all the lights required by law (assuming this is really enough), it appears they are wearing a black uniform when patrolling at night (contrary to standard public safety advice not to wear dark colors near traffic at night). Perhaps a lighter color uniform or a florescent orange or green vest?
