[Yesterday], Obama took a now-familiar path in adopting a program — this time a jobs and infrastructure effort--that can happen entirely within his domain. Obama directed several federal agencies to identify "high-impact, job-creating infrastructure projects" that can be expedited now, without congressional approval.Do your work or we'll do it for you.... Is that the tone Obama actually wants to take?
One week before he will make a major address to Congress on jobs, Obama is making sure they know he plans to move forward without them. The president has also directed the Education Department to come up with a "Plan B" updating the 2001 No Child Left Behind law in the absence of congressional action. The message to Congress is clear: Do your work or we'll do it for you....

Works for me. :-)
Obama thinks his job is to rule. The Executive branch has not been so abusive to Constitutional government since Wilson and FDR.
Cleaning up after his top-down messes will take a generation.
Why hasn't this been done already?
"Obama took a now-familiar path in adopting a program — this time a jobs and infrastructure effort--that can happen entirely within his domain."
It's good to be the King.
Another problem I have with this approach. If it is good to waive regulations and review, why do it for only 3 projects in each department?
He needs an audience to maintain the illusion he's not to blame...
"Do your work or we'll do it for you."
I'm really getting tired of the disingenuous assertion. It's NOT that they aren't doing their work. There is a disagreement as to what to do.
Impeachment is Congress's job.
Good idea -- really piss off both branches of Congress!
Obama may very soon get a deep understanding of who FUNDS the Executive Branch of government.
"The message to Congress is clear: Do your work or we'll do it for you...."
What's wrong w/ this message?
OTOH, it is true that the John Adams version was more cleverly (and harshly) constructed:
"In my many years I have come to a conclusion that one useless man is a shame, two is a law firm, and three or more is a congress."
This is amazing. Congress funds everything. How is all this supposedd to be funded?
Is that the tone Obama actually wants to take?
How can he take that tone?
Do you suppose he will explain why he waited two and a half years to take these steps?
What's wrong w/ this message?
What's wrong with it is exactly what Original Mike said.
I'm certainly curious to know what infrastructure projects fall under the purview of the Executive branch. Are we going to begin construction of a Great Pyramid help Obama's journey into the afterlife or something?
Next step, nationalize the oil industry!
high-impact, job-creating infrastructure projects
Yeah, but are they shovel-ready?
As per usual, the only thing Obama has that is shovel ready is the bullshit. The house republicans ought to agree to the gas tax extension but with a price: the Davis-Bacon Act has to be first repealed and any state and local government receiving federal gas tax revenues must also first repeal their versions of Davis-Bacon. lets see obama and the democrats justify why its so important to grossly overpay public works projects with the tax payer's money just to pay off their union supporters.
Let me see, Congress was OK last year, but this year they aren't doing their job. What could have changed over there to make Obama feel differently?
His plans can't possibly make a dent in the the enormous jobs pictures unless they include rebuilding the U.S. highway system from scratch, including that old run down bridge to the 21st century, wherever it is.
He is not really expecting this to create enough jobs, he knows he can't do that. He is hedging in case things improve before the election, so he can point to this as why. The odds are things will recover some by then. The fight is gonna be over who gets credit. Obama will win that, but the improvement will have to be pretty substantial.
It's telling how helpless the government is to fix anythin, that all they can do is hope it fixes itself and they get credit.
We truly are the ones we have been waiting for. WE will pull it out when WE are confident, that our government is not the enemy.
There's been another announcement. The obamas will be vacationing in Bali, sometime in November.
Have you heard the latest job-creator?
The NLRB is going to force all employers to post great giant 17" by 11" posters, bigger than any of the other posters they have for minimum wage and so on, notifying their employees in great, big, red letters that they have a right to unionize, that their employers have no right to threaten to shut down the business if they do unionize, and so on.
That's an interesting bit of law, by the way: I have free speech, but not if I'm saying the statement "We will shut down this business if you unionize," even if that statement is true.
How is that constitutional?
Is that the tone Obama actually wants to take?
What about the way Libya was handled, or this Labor Secretary/illegal aliens thing yesterday would lead you to any other conclusion?
His only prayer at this point is to somehow paint himself as an incumbent outsider. Literally...what other choice does he have? He can't run on his record and win, even with the racist monolithic thirteen percent of the vote in the bag for him.
Obama I is not waiting for the American Government's elected representatives to obey him anymore.
He says do it my way or the highway.
That is what the media has been hiding for 2 years now. That is SOP for of Ruling Chairman.
He must be baiting Congress to try to stop him. Then the Congress will appear to be the one Choke Holding the economic recovery.
The simple truth is that Obama has already done 20 terrible harmful actions to Jobs within the USA and refused to do 2 known beneficial actions.
So now he wants credit if he finally agrees to do the 2 useful actions he was refusing to do.
But he will double down on the 20 harmful actions in permitoriums and disgraceful EPA charades regulating energy and auto industries to death so he meets his 5 year plan target to destroy the American economy/dollar and thereby destroy its military power.
Obama is awesome...that is if you want the USA removed from all world influence and power.
Shovel ready!
gregg - Exactly. I suspect the Dems in Congress like this. They can try to deflect any responsibility away from themselves.
All the economy needs is time and freedom. This recession should already be over. We chose to lessen the blow through bailouts. We did. The cost was a longer recession. The total pain is the same, but we don't live forever. Besides that, bad policies have been implemented since. Again to soften the blow of free markets and life, but at the expense of prosperity and growth. It never works in the long run, and it didn't work much in the short run either.
"He is hedging in case things improve before the election, so he can point to this as why. The odds are things will recover some by then."
I used to think that, but now I'm not so sure. This Administration's policies are such a wet blanket (to borrow Steve Wynn's phrase) that it's possible that nothing short of Obama's ouster will revive the economy.
"gregq said...

The "no congress" actions are to appease the base. The plans that he brings forth, which will most assuredly be rejected by the House because they will be warmed over "stimulus" plans, will be his "party of no" strategy.
It will fail, but it's all he's got.
"Obama is awesome...that is if you want the USA removed from all world influence and power."
I bet quite a few Obama supporters support this, as well as lots of "independents".
"high-impact, job-creating infrastructure projects"
Hey, I thought of one! The Keystone pipeline. Oh wait, we're not for that kind of high-impact, job-creating infrastructure project.
Of course he's taking that approach. All he can do for 2012 is blame Congress because by then blaming Bush is risible.
And this ... boy ... will soon thereafter run off to his boyhood home. How interesting to have what amounts to a large 12-year old as President.
"Do your work or we'll do it for you"
Isn't that how we got Obamacare, a near trillion stimulus that didn't work and Frank-Dodd? Not to mention the EPA rampage, NLRB, etc.
Rampage on, Bams. You own the results.
And the funding for this pipe-dream comes from where? Oh yeah, Congress.
If he can do all of this without action from Congress, then I have 2 questions:
1) Why has he waited so long to do it? Did he WANT the country to go longer without these wonderful jobs programs? and
2) Why does he need a joint session of Congress to announce these intra-executive-branch actions?
Thank god! Our infrastructure is crumbling. Crumbling!!!
Althouse:
At what age do you think Obama stopped learning new things and ceased adapting in response to new information?
Running Against Congress is a good tack for Obama to take. Who has lower approval ratings than Obama? Congress! I'm doing something while Congress sits and argues.
This is perfectly normal and sane. Executive departments should be maximizing the impact of their budgets. If the president wants them to make job-creating projects that don't need congressional approval a priority, that's his prerogative. (Will that prioritization come at the expense of longer-term projects or fundamental reform? Time will tell.)
The spinning of this as an exercise in presidential command -- or imperial overreach -- is inane. Obama is bravely/arrogantly working within the limits Congress has given him. Read the article.
The real question, why hasn't this happened already?
Obama is an ordinary left wing totalitarian screw-up, the last century was full of those nut jobs. He is also the first president of my lifetime that I think deserves impeachment.
Lessee, now.
It's September 1.
Have we invaded Poland yet?
rhhardin said...
Impeachment is Congress's job.
Even that may not save the Demos.
So, Obama's master plan has been to push the economy to the brink, blame it on Congress, then pull out executive orders to save us right before the election (without enough time to fully see the results of the projects)... thus demonstrating that Congress drools, he rules, and if he's given four more years, this time he can really make it work.
Really? Münchausen syndrome by proxy? That's his plan/campaign?
I have free speech, but not if I'm saying the statement "We will shut down this business if you unionize," even if that statement is true.
How about:
The expenses incurred by unionizing will make it unfeasible and impossible to continue to maintain this business, therefore I will be taking another career path, and I suggest you do the same. Have a nice day.
Uh huh. No money. Maybe, just toll roads? Except, to use NYC and NJ as examples, those are set by a COMPACT ... A State to State agreement. So that's one form of cash outside of Obama's pocket.
The other is if it would be Kosher? Like we're now arguing over the LAW (unfortunately signed by Congress, too), that mandates individuals to buy health-care insurance. Even in States that would prefer to keep their insurance companies under their bailiwick.
If nothing else it seems that Obama is making headway creating many jobs for lawyers.
And, IF Congress decides to go "all unich" ... will it be much different than Germany? Where Merkel knows her own team doesn't like her EURO "bonds" plan. But to dump the plan they have to dump her. AND seek new elections. Or, if they peel away ... she just goes to the socialists and the greens to pick up the 20 or so votes she'll need to give Belgium more powers than her own citizens have?
For the short term it always looks like the politician who has the powerful top job of prime minister and president ... always wins.
On the other hand ... Buildings don't explode all at once ... the degenerate ... and collapse slowly.
Here? Not enough the lame and stupid party has to fight health-care, they're gonna look like they're gonna allow another grab at Federal Powers ... which will exist in the Executive Branch.
Perhaps, Obama feels more people will watch the NFL? (Where he forgets that even so ... people join into discussions where the public doesn't let go of something they don't like.)
LBJ didn't want to listen on Vietnam.
Nixon didn't want to think the press has resal powers to destroy Presidents. He didn't have "immunity" from that!
Jimmy Carter didn't have immunity from his own stupidity, either.
And, the Bush Family is ... well ... the Bush Family.
Obama? Well, he's gonna come off as a schlemiel. There will be lots of jokes.
And, he could "win" his plan ... because the opposition can't figure out how to get off their own pork pots.
Germany's "decision day" is September 29th.
Theirs comes before ours.
While ALL politicians, once they are in ... know MOST politicians hate the system of "going to elections, and letting the people choose."
Here? Benefits to knowing what's up ahead of time.
Scott - "What about the way Libya was handled..."
And it appears that's worked out just fine.
What's your complaint?
Apparently, CNN disapproves on any harsh criticism of Obama. At Carol Costello's Facebook asking what Obama could say to end bipartisanship, I said, "Obama's at the heart of the bipartisan bickering. Stop the hate speech by you and your minions, like Rep. Andre Carson." The comment was removed. I noticed many comments removed that weren't vulgar, etc. Just harshly critical of Obama. Mostly ones that say he should give a resignation speech.
The real question, why hasn't this happened already?
Obama is Dorothy, and he had to wear the ruby slippers to the brink and back before he learned about their mighty powers.
I hate our president.
Bart Hall (Kansas, USA) - "Boy?"
Just couldn't help yourself, huh?
Jerk.
And this...boy...ain't talking about light bulbs or abortion bills? Worst ever!
Racist!!! Racist!!! Ack!!11!
"Executive departments should be maximizing the impact of their budgets."
Presumably this authority is maximized when dreadful earmarks are lessened or eliminated.
What's the point of this speech then?
Why is he wasting everyone's time?
Never thought I would say this, but go play golf Mr. President.
This is a campaign event for Obama. They are all campaign events for Obama.
You mean the President has the discretionary power to direct the activities and expenses of the Executive Branch and all that hysteria about the debt default was just made-up hooey to score political points?!? Say it ain't so!
Honestly, if he can reallocate some money to have a quicker impact without spending any "new" money, it's not the worst thing in the world.
Though I have faith that he and his brain trust of halfwits will find a way to muff it up.
Wait a minute.
Obama comes out. Instead of saying "Hello, Americans," he said, "Raise your right hand swear after me."
BINGO.
We're all members of the military. We all just got drafted. And, we could go to jail if we say "we didn't repeat the oath, or say AMEN."
But we'd get carted off jail.
And, as members of the military, suddenly we are all serving under the Commander In Chief.
Maybe, that's the plan?
Maybe Jay Carney & Circus will announce it? Maybe, even illegals will shift position?
Then, at the end of this, Obama says "I WANT TO WELCOME YOU INTO MY SERVICE. HERE ARE YOUR ORDERS."
Then, he can promise to do the same thing with marriages ... as he lines up all singles ...
Why not go for broke?
We're already broke, anyway.
What he's doing right now, he should have done long ago; forget about getting any kind of agreement from the right because it's obviously never going to happen.
Without providing any actual solutions or even realistic ideas, their only hope is for the President to fail.
Just do it and let the chips fall as they may.
*And what's really funny about all of the bashing he's taking here, all of the silly pouting and projecting...is that he'll be re-elected in 2012.
DBQ, I'm not a labor lawyer, but I'm pretty sure that your statement would get me into trouble with the NLRB.
I'm not allowed to go out and tell my employees "If you unionize, we will shut down the business." I don't think explaining that it's a matter of economics, or that the owner will choose to retire, would make it legal.
Even if all of those things are simple, provable facts.
Raul said...
Scott - "What about the way Libya was handled..."
And it appears that's worked out just fine.
Fighting is still ongoing, nobody knows who's in charge, and it's not clear how mobbed up with outfits like Al Qaeda the rebels really are.
Yeah, just fine!
Without providing any actual solutions or even realistic ideas, their only hope is for the President to fail.
Just do it and let the chips fall as they may.
Substituting R's for D's, your advise would obviously apply to Bush's administration wouldn't it?
Pastafarian - The next time you're in any retail enterprise, try calling any of the male workers of color "boy" and see how that works out for you.
I'm sure they'll think it's hilarious.
Yes, Raul; we need to spend ourselves out of this recession. It hasn't worked yet, but let's just spend harder.
As Obama said: We find ourselves in a hole, and we have to dig our way out. (No, seriously, he said it. He's not only unfamiliar with the "first rule of holes," but he's also unfamiliar with simple tools like shovels, and any other implement with which one could do actual work.)
wv: aphro. Racist wv!!11!
What else is he supposed to do? The republicans in Congress are actively working to prevent economic recovery in order to achieve political success...shameful.
Scott - I think Bush had a majority on both sides for six years.
Correct?
Correct?
That depends. Did Obama's uncle ask for special favors?
Day 1 job for the next Republican president should be to immediately expunge every single Obama-era executive order and administrative finding. Every one.
Pastafarian "Yes, Raul; we need to spend ourselves out of this recession. It hasn't worked yet, but let's just spend harder."
I never said anything of the kind.
Please provide the ideas and solutions that have been suggested from your side of the aisle.
And leave out cutting taxes on corporations and the wealthy.
Raul, I might call you an asshole, but that doesn't mean I'll walk up to some random dude and call them one.
And why would I go up to someone gainfully employed in a productive job, demonstrating more adulthood than President Knucklehead ever has, and insult them?
And why a "retail enterprise"? Do you suppose that this is the only place I'm likely to encounter one of those dusky creatures?
Bart Hall isn't a racist. There are a couple of guys here who are questionable, but he's not one. You, I'm not so sure about.
Bush had a GOP majority in the Senate for maybe about 4 years, and it was not, if I recall correctly, ever filibuster-proof.
I would also note the a huge proportion of the Bush-era debt was racked up in the final two years of his presidency - you know, when San Fran Nan controlled the appropriating part of the Government.
Scott - I think Bush had a majority on both sides for six years.
Correct?
As for the major story involving the "uncle":
My understanding is that the uncle asked to call the White House.
Did he? Did the White House accept the call? Does he have the right to make the call? Was he provided any "special favors?"
But back to reality: What does it have to do with you not having the guts to answer my response?
Raul: "And leave out cutting taxes on corporations and the wealthy."
Hmm...here's one: Cut taxes on corporations. And "the wealthy."
Our small business will pay 6 figures in federal income tax this year. If we didn't have to, I'd hire one additional person to do marketing, and I'd use the rest for a downpayment on a turning center that would be run by about 1.5 others running the jobs that marketing person would get for us.
But we're an S corp, so our business is one of those "wealthy" "people" that pay higher taxes every time you bump up the rates.
Shit head.
infrastructure
That means roads and bridges, right? I've been driving since 1963 and I can't ever remember a year when there wasn't road construction. Boy, oh boy.
holdfast "Bush had a GOP majority in the Senate for maybe about 4 years, and it was not, if I recall correctly, ever filibuster-proof."
The Republican Party kept control of both the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate until 2007.
The Democratic Party took control of both houses of the 110th Congress, by a very slim margin, especially in the Senate.
"What about the way Libya was handled..."
"Raul" aka Hoss the Romneytoid: And it appears that's worked out just fine.
Sure sign of a bootlicking phony--bless HRC and BO (and GOP-TP when needed),McCain, NATO, US military. It didn't work out fine (and that's just not the teabagger-GOP view). The rebels are not some...day-glo wearing freaks are they. There are many islamists in the ranks--it could get worse.
He is moving more quickly to "dictator" status than even I thought he would.
Raul wrote...
"...The next time you're in any retail enterprise, try calling any of the male workers of color "boy" and see how that works out for you".
Did you really write "male workers of color"? Are you really that fucking retarded? Perhaps you are a racist, or you have no color. Either way, you have got to be kidding me - male workers of color - what a pathetic piece of PC shit you are. Who the fuck taught you to use language like that, you fucking imbecile? You have to be a fucking moby, no real person would write like that.
Pastafarian - You just can't come up with anything other than cutting taxes.
Taxes are at their lowest ebb in decades.
The average wealthy American pay about 17% in taxes, with capital gains taxed at 15%.
Many of the major corporations pay absolutely NO taxes.
But back to reality: What does it have to do with you not having the guts to answer my response?
First, we had an unanswered stream of questions from yesterday. Garage is the only exception I make to the rule of engaging in new debate when there's old business afoot. He's an exception because he's a decent person and, well, "special"...short bus special, but special nonetheless.
Secondly, if commenting on a blog is your idea of "guts" you have some serious sheltering to break through.
Thirdly, you're stating the obvious and ignoring the point. Sure, he had a majority for the first six years and even while walking away from what fiscal conservatives would have liked him to do/not to do, he still kept unemployment at half what POTUS has done and kept his deficits at, what, 1/3 what this guy has done in half the time?
My point was more to the 2006-2008 period and the behavior of congress in regards to a GOP president. One only has to look as far as Reid's comments about the surge to understand their desire to see him fail.
Back to the "guts" thing. I'm really concerned about your mental health. Please see someone about this asap.
Raul said: "I never said anything of the kind."
But also:
"What he's doing right now, he should have done long ago..."
"He" meaning "Obama", "what he's doing right now" meaning instructing his minions in the various agencies to ratchet up the spending on bullshit infrastructure and make-work projects.
Oh, you don't want them to spend more money than they would have; you just want them to spend it...what? In some way that will "create" jobs?
Just how were they going to spend this money before?
Sixty - Tell me how you would describe a male worker of color.
*I referenced "male" since I assume the cretin I was responding to is a male.
Jim Jeffords defection in 2001 handed control of the senate to the democrats. Bush did not have both houses until the 2002 midterms. Four years, not six.
"A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee." -- Bill Clinton
That was back when we used to call people of obama's color, boy. I remember those days.
Pastafarian - So can I assume you're against putting Americans to work on re-building the infrastructure of the country?
Once again: Short of your cut taxes mantra: Give us some new ideas from the right.
Since congress has the power of the purse, that would seem to limit make-work programs to those of the "We'll pretend to pay you, and you can pretend to work" variety.
But execustive orders might cover some government mandates. Could an executive order somehow monkeywrench suppies of fossil fuels, thus "stimulating" vendors of alternative energy, mass transit, etc.?
"A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee."
For some reason I always thought that was Biden. I really need to get my Democratic closet racists in order.
I can't ever remember a year when there wasn't road construction.
I can't remember a year when pork-barrel spending wasn't called "investment in infrastructure."
pband wrote: Presumably this authority is maximized when dreadful earmarks are lessened or eliminated.
Presumably, yes, and one hopes Obama will ask Congress to do that next time he gives a speech.
Raul: "Taxes are at their lowest ebb in decades."
Revenues are down, because companies' profits are down. That's what they pay taxes on -- net income. Take your boot off the neck of employers, and revenue will go up. I really don't know how many times this has to be demonstrated to the left.
Move the rates up to 100%, and you'll see revenue drop off the table.
"Many of the major corporations pay absolutely NO taxes."
Because they show no profit; or they shift the profit to subsidiaries overseas.
Small businesses have no such recourse, and they've been in this administration's cross-hairs since day one.
I provided you with one concrete example of a small business that could employ 2.5 more people if they didn't have to pay taxes. All it would "cost" the federal government is about $125,000 in revenues. That's quite a bit better return than the usual dollars per jobs "created", isn't it, Raul?
their only hope is for the President to fail.
Just do it and let the chips fall as they may.
*And what's really funny about all of the bashing he's taking here, all of the silly pouting and projecting...is that he'll be re-elected in 2012.
Their hopes will be realized because he's doing the same thing that failed before. He's thinking "If I can get it just right..." But, if you're doing the wrong thing, it's never just right.
As far as him being re-elected, I know one idiot that'll be voting for him.
Allen - If you're looking for me to apologize for Clinton's comment, forget it.
A racist comment is a racist comment, regardless of who says it.
I'm really getting tired of the disingenuous assertion. It's NOT that they aren't doing their work. There is a disagreement as to what to do.
There is an honest belief among many that the conservative majority in the legislature is obstructionist. The Tea Party legislators are going Galt by simply trying to interfere with the efficient operation of the government. I have no idea how many truly believe this versus how many disingenuously promote the idea, but it's out there.
I can't remember a year when pork-barrel spending wasn't called "investment in infrastructure."
Spoken like a true melanist. You darkies disgust me.
Uh oh Raul the radical arguing for...raising taxes on the wealthy. At least for today, and on this site. But not ..manana when he's hanging with his Romneyoid/TP pals.
Yeah no shit--taxes should be raised. Even on small-medium sized businesses, including your sweatshop, and those of the small jobber Teabugs of Smurfhouse. Vintage Osmond tee's, priced to move too day
DADvocate - You and other keep repeating the same right wing drivel.
Provide the new and improved ideas we're hearing fro your side of the aisle.
And please: We ALL know about the cutting taxes thingie.
So, you guessed the author was male, and the "boy" part of the comment you were responding to didn't really enter into your stupid fucking PC equation. You need to sue the "educators" at the institution you attended - they have produced a moron. Your ability to reason is exceeded only by your arrogance and political correctness.
Now get back to whatever job you do at the sheltered workshop, you imbecile - you aren't supposed to use the computer, you get too much drool on it.
And Raul is some sort of minority name, is it not? You are a male of color, right boy? Is that you, Ass Crack? You can't fool us just by changing your handle, you racist cocksucker.
Why train them to be beehive makers, and honey technicians! And Book of Mormon salespeople.
A solid centrist plan. Romneyomics in action
Yeah no shit--taxes should be raised. Even on small-medium sized businesses, including your sweatshop, and those of the small jobber Teabugs of Smurfhouse. Vintage Osmond tee's, priced to move too day
Go ahead, do this, and see how little impact it makes on both the economy and the debt problem.
I'm fine with it. Own higher taxes in an recession.
J - Once again; I have absolutely no idea where you get the "Romney" tripe, but I have to assume you're either high on drugs or just plain dense.
I'm obviously a liberal and haven't the faintest idea why you or anyone would think that I would vote for Mitt Romney or any Republican.
If I remember correctly, I think I said I could "live" with him...over the other extremists that are in the running.
"Living" with the worst of evils is not the same as supporting.
See if you can squeeze that into that strange and cluttered little mind of yours.
Scott - I think Bush had a majority on both sides for six years.
Correct?
No. That is not correct. It was only for four years from 2003-2007.
Raul, we should spend money to rebuild infrastructure when it needs to be rebuilt; not because we want to give some jobs to AFSCME members so that they can funnel more contributions to the people who brought them the jobs.
There's nothing wrong with the roads and bridges around here. Maybe you're from Cleveland, and things are different there.
See, here's the thing: The economy can function just fine all by itself. It doesn't need a special educated class of bureaucrat with their hand on some imaginary steering wheel at all times, making their super-smart adjustments and tweaks.
So the solution that I offer: Get the fuck out of the way, and go out and look for actual productive employment, instead of serving as a leach on the ass of the economy. If you gutted the government, eliminating whole departments (like the NLRB) and these hundreds of thousands of people had to go out into the real world and create actual wealth or starve, we'd see an economic renaissance in this country.
Not just a recovery; we'd see prosperity beyond imagination.
The problem isn't (just) too much taxes, it's too much spending, and spending on things that are counterproductive.
I don't know if you work, Raul, or where you work, but I did factory work for my livelihood and I worked with male workers of color. When we started to hire a lot of Hmong men (do you know what those people are?) some of the worse racial prejudice came from the mouths of those male workers of color. Does that surprise you? The whites and mexicans got along ok with the Hmong, but not the male workers of color. Why is that?
E.M. Davis - "Own higher taxes in an recession."
Maybe you need to read more and post bullshit less:
Republicans might want to check the record of the conservative icon, former President Ronald Reagan. As Reagan’s first budget director, David Stockman, told Bloomberg News that Reagan did exactly what the Republicans are campaigning against:
“That put the lie to the current arguments of Republicans that the economy is too weak to bear a tax increase” because “the next year 3.5 million jobs were created,” said Stockman, who says tax increases are now needed to help reduce the deficit. “When the Republicans rhetorically say now, ‘Who would raise taxes in a recession?’ the answer is Ronald Reagan.”
Allen - As I said before; racism is racism.
And yes, I still work, and I've had many jobs over the years, working side by side with people of color, especially in the construction trades.
Regardless of where you see or hear it; it's ugly.
As for calling the President of the United States, "boy."
Well, that's not only uncalled for and just plain ignorant, it's also un-American.
"...Scott - "What about the way Libya was handled.
And it appears that's worked out just fine...."
Ok just so I understand, attacking a sovereign nation that posed no imminent threat to the US, without the approval of Congress is fine with you only because it 'worked out.'
Gotcha.
I'm obviously a liberal and haven't the faintest idea why you or anyone would think that I would vote for Mitt Romney or any Republican.
If I remember correctly, I think I said I could "live" with him...over the other extremists that are in the running.

"And it appears that's worked out just fine...."
Just out of curiosity, are you "fine" with the word games this administration has played since taking office? Kinetic military action (not war), man-caused disasters (not terrorism), etc?
It's like someone going out of their way to call someone African-American instead of black. The PC bullshit that spawned all three is certainly cut from the same cloth.
I'm obviously a liberal and haven't the faintest idea why you or anyone would think that I would vote for Mitt Romney or any Republican.

The message to Congress is clear: Do your work or we'll do it for you....Do your work or we'll do it for you.... Is that the tone Obama actually wants to take?
Apparently.
Raul, the word "boy", used in the context that Bart Hall used it, doesn't have any racial connotation at all.
Am I a racist if I call the kid who delivers the paper "paper boy"?
Bart was pointing out that Obama behaves like an adolescent. And I'm not surprised; this is typical of someone who's been cocooned in the university, and then in "public service", their whole life and has never done anything actually productive, ever, in his entire fucking life.
"... As for calling the President of the United States, "boy."
Well, that's not only uncalled for and just plain ignorant, it's also un-American...."
No its not, its about as American as you can get because unlike other countries we have the freedom to do so. Like when you guys called Bush the second coming of Hitler for 8 years
Raul said...
There were supposed to be budget cuts from the Demos to match the tax increase, that's the only reason Reagan went along with it.
But, guess what?
The Demos went back on their word on the budget cuts.
That lie is getting real old.
Raul also forgets Reagan pushed through the biggest tax cut in history.
Oh, boy.
As they say.
Bart was pointing out that Obama behaves like an adolescent.
I thought the ... before and after were a dead giveaway for that. Apparently not if you've been worshiping at the alter of political correctness for decades, though.
the next year 3.5 million jobs were created
Because of the tax increases, or due to other factors?
Show me causation.
Like I said, I'm all in. Let's do this. Let's raise those rates ... I'm thinking 63% on the highest earners. That sound good?
I'm being totally serious. Let's see what happens.
Brennen - I was wrong...kind of:
I had forgotten about Jeffords switching parties and giving the Dems the majority i the Senate, but that was only until Wellstone croaked and Talent took over for Carnahan, with the GOP regaining control.
So the Dems effectively had control for about one of those years 2001 - 2002.
My deepest apologies.
That's brilliant, J.
How will the gas pumps know the make of car?
While we're at it, maybe bump the rate up on people with those slanty-3 nascar bumper stickers. Those annoy me. And left-handed drivers. And on those cars that are sort-of-purple, sort-of-green. I mean, what the fuck -- make up your mind.
My deepest apologies.
Hysterical. That took "guts".
Scott - Defend it as you may, but who the hell calls the President of the United States "boy" in any context?
And especially if he's a person of color?
Are you dense?
*Oh, and you never responded to how that Libya thingie worked out.
"... The Tea Party legislators are going Galt by simply trying to interfere with the efficient operation of the government...."
Am I the only one who read the last five words and laughed so hard I cracked a rib?
We spent $800 billion on stimulus 2 years ago and now you're saying its interference because some rational thinking people are opposed to borrowing billions more on the same cockamanie scheme?
Jesus Christ.
Show make and model to the clerk. Eazy, Pastaman, and one might say Just--ie, a quarter per gallon is nothing to a... CEO, or country club GOPer. But to middle or working class people, it does add up quickly. Then economic Justice--not a concept in the teabagger-Randian lexicon. Galbraith suggested something of the sort.
If Obama "rolls out" an infrastructure construction program relying on waving regulations and expediting the processes, it is going nowhere. Never mind Congress, even if Congress does fund this insanity, the various agencies, Federal State, and local, will revolt and sabotage each other like nothing you've ever seen before.
I have said it before, and I will say it again: Obama and his crew just do not know or understand how things work - in or out of Government.
You tell us, Raul, how has the Libyan thingie worked out? Who's in charge? I don't know. What political persuasion do they represent?
Raul, I'm surprised you didn't call me a racist for using the word "cocooned" with respect to Obama.
One must read between the lines, after all, to be sure to weed out all of the oldspeak.
Raul, so far you've called Bart Hall a racist and ScottM dense.
You're 0-for-2. Maybe you should call MadisonMan an extremist or AllenS a pussy and go for the trifecta.
*Oh, and you never responded to how that Libya thingie worked out.
Two or three others pointed out exactly my point. For you to call it "fine" shows not only a heaping helping of counting chickens before they've hatched, it's incredibly ignorant of the facts on the ground.
Come back in five years and let's discuss if this worked out "fine".
"... - Defend it as you may, but who the hell calls the President of the United States "boy" in any context?..."
How about moronic child?
"... Oh, and you never responded to how that Libya thingie worked out...."
How did it? Last I looked fighting is still going on. What imminent threat did Libya pose to US again? Just wondering as that seems to have been the standard liberals have established after Iraq when it comes to using military force against a sovereign nation.
Or doesnt that apply when a liberal Democrat is in office?
Yeah, that's an awesome idea, J. We'll just show our car to the clerk whenever we get gas, so they can adjust the tax rates for us.
You're an idea-man, J. That's probably what they call you down at the 7-11 -- The Idea Man.
And with that, back to work, to earn money for my masters, J and Raul.
Raul said...
Scott - Defend it as you may, but who the hell calls the President of the United States "boy" in any context?

Harry Belafonte called the Secretary of State (or was she NSA at the time) a house slave.
Raul thought that was funny, I'm sure.
All who dare criticize Dear Leader are racisss. I has spoken.

Yeah Pasta, a sliding scale of taxes--a bit deep for a tweeker such as you, Pasta perp. Like income tax rates--complex and mysterious!
J is an impressive cat. He hates everyone including Jeremy aka Raul.
Complete anti social psycho and can bench press 400 lbs.
Impressive. Most impressive.
Raul, since the beginning of time, people have had their prejudices. As long as people are alive, they'll have their prejudices. That's just the way it is. That's the way is always will be. Do you think that a group that calls itself The Congressional Black Caucus is racially motivated? It is clear to me that they are prejudiced.
Jeremy aka Raul
Seriously doubt this is the case. Completely different styles in a way that would be very difficult to fake. Plus, "duh" is conspicuously missing.
My own $0.02, of course.
A bit more impressive than you, Hoosier Sodbuster. I can read and know that Raul's no Jeremy. He's .....a thespian! A Big Hoss-Hamlet for yr Log Cabin self, Hoosier-joto. Toe tap for it, HD
Wait, you mean La Raza is The Race as in racial and not Mexican version of nascar?
sonofaBITCH!!!!!
Watching J and Raul go at it is like watching Godzilla battle Rodan.
You have to figure out who to root for.
I got your back J. You the man!
You and other keep repeating the same right wing drivel.
Spoken as an expert on drivel.
Provide the new and improved ideas we're hearing fro your side of the aisle.
Ditto. FDR of color redux.
You said "fro" you racist. It's your unconscious racism showing through.

No, it's like watching Hitler fight Stalin.
You wish there was a way both could lose.
PS and OT: How'd you come out in Nanny Bloomberg's flood?
Scott M you should know that there is no doubt that Raul is one of the people who write the "Jeremy."
Previously known as Luckyoldson, Michael and Jeremy it is a group effort spearheaded by a professor from Southern California who is attempted to derail this blog by disrupting the conversation. RIght Gene?
The style is basicly the same but he is trying to cover it up by not be too obvious. He will be using "Duh" and calling everyone Teabaggers soon enough. Just give him a couple of days. He can't help himself.
Irene was just a big fraud. It did cost everyone a lot of money because they shut the subways on Saturday.
Bloomberg should be impeached.
Previously known as Luckyoldson, Michael and Jeremy it is a group effort spearheaded by a professor from Southern California who is attempted to derail this blog by disrupting the conversation.
Possibly...but do you think the three of them together could bench 400 pounds?
I keep it somewhat real York--"Raul"'s only PC when it suits him. We're arguing for Galbraithnomics....not Romneyomics or Ahhhnuld.
adjustable sales and gas taxes--a sound idea. The Fed. does it with income, and....state could via sales
That's true J. You are real and an original. There is nobody and I mean nobody who is like you.
Good stuff. Keep it up.
I keep it somewhat real York
Hysterical, John.
You are the James Ellroy of this blog J.
I must confess I am a big fan of his novels so your stuff is quite entertaining.
I bet one of them alone weighs 400 pounds.
Unless you really are James Ellroy?
Could that be possible?
I have some big name authors who have slummed at my blog so maybe the professor has the current reigning genius of hard boilded crime and conspiracy novelists here.
That would be way cool.
Yeah...you'll learn more about writing--if not politics--from an Ellroy, Chandler, Hammett, Jim Thompson than you do in college town, even like at Peoria State where Scottie got his BS in Agricultural Economics. And much more than you do from the Book of Mormon (seems to be a fave of many Ahousers).
Are they making a new Ellroy flick, TY?? White Jazz, or 6000, Ive heard. Done correctly Jazz would be....NC 17
I was kinda hoping that I'd find out who was running Libya, but it doesn't look like I will.

Don't fret. Raul said it's worked out fine. Right, Raul?
So the Dems effectively had control for about one of those years 2001 - 2002.
My deepest apologies.
You're still wrong. Even after Wellstone died in the plane crash, the GOP did NOT control the Senate. Senator Daschle was Majority Leader Daschle from 2001-2003.
Jim Talent was elected in 2002, but even that didn't change the Majority leader.

If Obama "rolls out" an infrastructure construction program relying on waving regulations and expediting the processes, it is going nowhere. The President is from Illinois, yet he really doesn't get it that government doesn't work.
He's silly eyed for government. He just cannot see how ineffective it is at addressing the problems he sees.
He must learn by failing.
Raul is Jeremy. I'll bet one of Trooper's best store bras and a month supply of J's Ritalin on it.
you can't even get the dope right, Hoosier Sodbuster

Raul's not a Jeremy, A-tards. Think Hoss Cartwright, on meth. Dat's Raul.
"White Jazz" would be a great movie. I don't know who would do it though.
Maybe Brian De Palma but I think he lost his fastball.
Maybe Tarrentino?
But if they are going to make an Ellroy movie I hope they do "American Tabloid."
That would freak some people out!
educher - "Raul also forgets Reagan pushed through the biggest tax cut in history."
I didn't forget...and that's exactly why he had to raise taxes at least four times; to offset the massive lack of funds coming into the treasure.
You always leave out the factual elements of Reagan's ill-advised
tax cuts at the beginning of his tenure.
Read Stockman's book.
Pastafarian - NO, "tax rates" are at their lowest ebb in decades.
Hoosier - "What imminent threat did Libya pose to US again?"
Our assistance was and is based on humanitarian efforts, not an "imminent threat."
Do you ever actually read newspapers before posting ridiculous comments?
But, since you raise the point of an "imminent threat," I guess we could ask the same of Iraq.
Did you feel we were were on the verge of being attacked by Iragi forces when Bush invaded?
Now...just for once, try to be honest.
Brennen - You're forgetting that Cheney had the deciding vote.
Our assistance was and is based on humanitarian efforts, not an "imminent threat."
Then why aren't we in Syria?
adjustable sales and gas taxes--a sound idea. The Fed. does it with income, and....state could via sales
Naw. The sound idea is quit spending so much. Leave us alone.
Yes Raul, but I though waging military operations against sovereign nations was supposed to be about imminent threats. That's what you guys said about Iraq so just trying to see if you're consistent, which you're not.
We picked a side in a civil war to overthrow the legitimate leader of Lybia. Don't think that's in the NATO charter either. The Germans didn't think so either which is why they refused to participate.
Funny how Obama won't intervene in Syria where Assad is murdering his own folks. Hmmmm. Maybe certain brown people don't qualify for 'humanitarian' aid eh Raul?
Oh and the 'don't you read newspapers before commenting' is classic Jeremy.
K I'm done with that tool
Tabloid isn't my favorite Ellroy though fairly entertaining--sleazy as f*ck--the days of J-Edgar. WJ was near the edge of porn and sleaze, though still ...powerful, and against police corruption--with AT he crossed over into the..."ding an sich." Nihilistic, really.
Ellroy reminds us that law and order types (whether GOP or Demos) are often as reprehensible as the perps and mafiosi they are trying to bust--as with LA-Con's Dudley Smith (Ive read thats based on a real LAPD cop). LA Con was a good flick, but ....not quite great--(Basinger did well as the ho, at least).
Id like to see a flick made from Hammett's Red Harvest (there was one, IIRC--but updated, harder). Butte in 20s and 30s---like hell on earth, and a much larger city than it is now.
Wow--Ellroy chat--a bit superior to hearing mormon putos such as R. and S and HD whine
Roger Clemens when once asked if he had intentionally hit a batter replied "The ball went where I threw it."
Had I meant to be strictly racist I would have capitalized Boy. That said, Obama doesn't have the administrative ability to be somebody's houseboy, and at age 50 I doubt he's trainable.
It's the folks who voted for him on account his skin colour who are the racists.
I voted against him and continue to find him desperately off-putting because he's a profoundly immature, arrogant, incompetent, militant, idealogue who actively hates the things about America that have made it the greatest force for good in the history of humanity.
And just so idiots like Raul know where I'm coming from, my family spent over a million dollars in today's money buying slaves in Richmond -- families about to be split up -- and then signing their papers of manumission.
My family have also brought forth officers for the defence of this nation in every single generation since 1701, so I have little patience for mental midgets, babbling boys, and incompetent idealogues who wish to tear it down from inside.
Obama's three out of three, but Raul's giving him some competition.
You're forgetting that Cheney had the deciding vote.
No. I'm not.
The Majority Leader steers the US Senate. The Senate President just breaks ties.
I understand your claim. It's basically D- minus quality work.
Here are the facts. President Obama, with a Democrat party controlled Senate and House, has steered the United States fiscal policy into the ditch without passing an actual budget through the Congress in over 600 days. This aggregious choice is now compromising the United States economy by littering it with uncertainty.
Brennen - I'm done arguing the point.
Bush had control of the Senate and House - for even 4 years...
And look what he left behind.
You can bitch about Obama all you want, but America knows what kind of President and Vice-President we had from 2000 - 20008.
And based on the dunces the GOP has running around in circles right now, you can bet your ass Obama will win again.
Bart - "Obama doesn't have the administrative ability to be somebody's houseboy..."
And once again.
Houseboy?
Denigrating your own President with silly, racist innuendo.
You're nothing more than a Bush wingnut apologist who just can't stand having a dark-skinned guy running the show.
Classic Jeremy.
Those old hits just keep on coming.
You're completely ignoring the original point that had nothing to do with how long the GOP or Democrats held Congress.
Your original comment was
Without providing any actual solutions or even realistic ideas, their only hope is for the President to fail.
And then you advised POTUS to just go ahead and do it and let the chips fall where they may.
My response to that was that you could have easily been advise given to Bush...I didn't even say WHEN during his administration, but it doesn't matter. The Democrats were doing exactly what you charge the GOP are doing now.
The entire point of the exercise was to point out intellectual inconsistency.
You would have to agree J that "My Dark Places" is just about the best true crime writing this side of "In Cold Blood."
It is more or less Ellroy's masterpiece.
Required reading for anyone who wants to understand how a crime or tragedy can set the course of someones life.

I enjoy talking baseball or books with you J. You are well informed.
"I didn't realize Ellroy was Crack's pen name."
Funny you would say that but I often thought they had a lot in common. They both express their pain through their art. Crack is an artist if you read his blog. It's just that sometimes when he is pulling your coat and lecturing you it feels like the end of that Lenny Bruce movie.
But I still love the guy.

He is Otay in my book.
Racist.
Raul said...Denigrating your own President with silly, racist innuendo....
You are a racialist. Racialists, because of their dishonesty, are far more poisonous to society than avowed racists.
Racists can be ignored out of hand, and have no argument to counter that dismissal acceptable to an honest and ethical person. Racialists know this very well and leverage it. They decry disagreement as racism, where no racism exists, because it serves their purpose to use the popular abhorrence of racists to marginalize their political opponents. Or line their pockets a la Al Sharpton.
Not only are you a dishonest debater, you are also a racialist.
You suck, to be blunt.
Raul, a grew things:
1) Bush had majorities of both Houses for four years. Not 6.
2) Given that Obama has not provided a single plan yet since his disastrous budget in February, your whining that Republicans have produced no plans is kinda funny.
3) Can you name the companies who paid no taxes? Did any of them turn a profit?
4) Did you actually imply that cutting taxes is an old idea while advocating infrastructure spending?
5) Growth under Reagan would've kicked in much quicker without the tax hike. But Reagan got a "no-brainer" deal of $3 in cuts for every $1 in taxes. Guess how much spending was cut in that deal?
6) would it be okay if we called Obama a "chimp"? If not, why not since Bush was called that repeatedly?
7) Libya? Well, they are protecting the terrorist murderer of hundreds and arresting blacks at random for the allegation of fighting with Khadaffy. Their Constitution is set to be based on sharia. Its working out real well. Truly.
8) if Libya was vital for humanitarian reasons, why does Obama hate the far more oppressed Syrian and Iranian people? Their governments handles their uprisings far more brutally. Syria is still brutalizing its people.
Raul...So where does you claim the Rich tax Bracket starts?
Is it at 200,000 or is it at 1,000,000 annual income?
Fooling the voters is not nice.
silly, racist innuendo.
The last resort of someone with no foundation to stand on, call them names.
Condensed version of Raul: "Racist!"
Then why aren't we in Syria?
As I can see Raul has posted since this question was posited to him, I can only surmise that he doesn't have the "guts" to answer the question after declaring Libya has worked out just fine.
Raul -- Can't stand "dark skin"? Look at my picture, taken in winter. You can't see the shape of my nose or my non-existent beard. You can't even see me this time of year, but many of my ancestors were here a long, Long, LONG time before yours. Greeting those odd-looking folks getting out of the boat at Jamestown.
Nor can you see my wife, also mixed blood, who's rather darker than I and has, shall we say, extremely curly hair.
You're a silly, tired, anachronistic old shell of an idea and have somehow missed out on realising that Spades are no longer trump.
That I can so totally rattle your cage with very mildly racial innuendo demonstrates how super-sensitive you are ... even when I lay it out in black and white.
Obama is priming the pump on a dry well.
The economy and unemployment will not improve until the $17 trillion in off-shore corporate earnings are repatriated.
There is nothing to gain by keeping it offshore, the Treasury will not receive another dime than has already been levied and paid.
There is a lot of grumbling coming from Sandhill, the VCs are not happy.
That I can so totally rattle your cage with very mildly racial innuendo demonstrates how super-sensitive you are
You're a smug condescending glibertarian doucehbag, that much is abundantly clear.
Bart - do you live anywhere near Ottawa, KS. I'll be there Saturday to watch my son and his team play football against Ottawa University.
More proof that Obama is not serious about job creation. Not only is T-Mobile likely to fail, or DT will sell it off in parts after they pocket ATT's $3 billion in default. ATT will not bring their customer service ops back on-shore.
(Telecommunications CS jobs in the US, the few that are left, are good paying, full benefit, union jobs.)
Who will pay the $3 billion? ATT customers and the taxpayers as T-Mobile lays off workers (also union jobs).
Raul,
How about those Congressional Black Caucus boys and girls?
And who in the fuck is running Libya?
We have an articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking man of color in the White House who lives more lavishly than royalty, has run the debt up to record levels, has proven himself inept, incompetent and out of touch.
Criticizing him is racist.
How many times have we heard that meme?

You're a smug condescending glibertarian doucehbag,
Hey, Garage, thanks! Coming from you that's a real compliment.
Don't worry, Raul, you don't have to answer me now about the Congressional Black Caucus. When you come back and post a comment, I'll ask you again, and again, and again...
Don't you think it's strange that so many pundits for so many years criticized the "imperial presidency," but now that we really and truly have an imperial presidency, there's nary a peep?

Re: "My Dark Places"
I never read Ellroy's novels, but that book is a killer.
You should check out some of his work Pogo.
My favorites are LA Confidential, American Tabloid and one of his first works "Killer on the Road" originally titled "Silent Terror."
But pretty much any of his stuff is off the wall and a lot of fun.
He writes like J talks.
That's why I think Ellroy is posting here.
It's the same when Cedarford posts. You pretty much think you are listening to Martin Bormann. Just sayn'
And Carol Herman...the original Sybil.
