Thatcher had a strong will that did not backed down. And she communicated her resolve to opponents in a civil manner.

In politics a woman with those qualities is better than a man without those qualities.

So I would chose Palin over Romney.

You just have to know how to negogiate.

Patrick বলেছেন...

I'd be more excited about this if I trusted Hollywood to do a fair job. They like to see things as very black and white, which is always less interesting. Here's hoping I'm surprised.

As my whimsy leads me.. বলেছেন...

She looks more like Pat Nixon.

Along with Reagan and John Paul, Dame Maggie won the Cold War.

I would agree with Patrick that I'm just a tad leery of what Hollyweird will do to a great woman, the greatest in British history since Elizabeth I.

KCFleming বলেছেন...

How will they portray a woman they despise?

I'll defer judgement, but I have my doubts.

Mebbe shoulda been a musical, like Mamma Mia.

William বলেছেন...

Meryl Streep sympathizes with the characters she plays. Perhaps in the way that Jack Nicholson gave Col. Jessup a moral force that was not inherent in his lines, she will make Thatcher a greater figure than the script indicates. But don't hold your breath. As a general rule it takes liberals a minumum of four generations to appreciate the good qualities of a conservative leader.

X বলেছেন...

sounds like they're using the theme from Moon.

Palladian বলেছেন...

Oh God, not another installment of "Meryl Streep Plays Dress-Up"... After her execrable performance as Julia Child a few years ago, I don't understand why anyone considers Streep a good actress. Another costume piece with her marginally imitating someone who has/had a distinctive voice... she's turning into this century's Rich Little, only not as funny, and Rich Little was never funny.

নামহীন বলেছেন...

You know who else has a high-pitched voice? That guy who propositioned Thatcher in the elevator that one time.

Robert বলেছেন...

Would rather see a movie about Jeane Kirkpatrick.

Anna বলেছেন...

I fear it will be a hatchet job on Lady Thatcher. Hope to be surprised.

Robert, can you imagine Jeanne Kirkpatrick and Sarah Palin having a conversation?

The Crack Emcee বলেছেন...

Very cool.

It definitely beats this.

Unknown বলেছেন...

Wow. Now that is a teaser!

Robert বলেছেন...

Robert, can you imagine Jeanne Kirkpatrick and Sarah Palin having a conversation?

About as easily as I can envision Nancy Reagan talking with Roosevelt's wife.

Carol_Herman বলেছেন...

Meryl Streep does it again!

I wonder who will play the queen? The queen absolutely hated the woman whom she thought of "as a daughter of a grocery store owner."

Then the queen said: "There will come a time she won't be re-elected. But I'll always be queen."

Diana was alive at the time.

I wonder if the script wrote itself? I'm sure politicians hire the putz'es who come along and take money for "advice."

It's like the movie business. Where you ask: Do people actually get paid for doing this work?

Carol_Herman বলেছেন...

Does Streep win another academy award?

Tom Hanks crapped out.

While, who knows? Hollywood may just have a hit on its hands?

I'd go to see this movie. Won't you?

PaulV বলেছেন...

Crack, Will Streep do an honest job or whore out to moonbats like Moore will? She is getting old to have another failure but Hollywood pressure has screwed things up before

Carol_Herman বলেছেন...

You know, even though the film says it's coming in January 2012 ... I'll lay a bet that it's shown in December 2011. Even if just for a "special engagement" at a top theater.

Interesting, to me, that I can spot a lie right off the bat.

This is not a movie scheduled to avoid the academy's attention. Heck, it can even win in Cannes.

I bet the queen is even more pissed off than when obama didn't stop his toast for "her song."

Alex বলেছেন...

It was all downhill after "Sophie's Choice". I'm sure it's another Hollywood hatchet job on a conservative.

chickelit বলেছেন...

In honor of her ladyship, I gave the world "the Maggie": link

Alex বলেছেন...

Remember Streep is "alar lady". Never forget her commie-ness.

virgil xenophon বলেছেন...

How will Hollywood treat a woman it despises? "Damning with faint praise" is the phrase that comes to mind..

Titus বলেছেন...

I loved Meryl as Julia Child.

Julia lived in Cambridge, Mass, fab, natch.

KCFleming বলেছেন...

I fondly recall Palladian's riff on Streep as Julia Child. Hilarious.

"Streep doesn't get the voice but worst of all, she doesn't get Julia's bearing: pay attention to the moment when the potato cake lands on the stovetop. Streep plays it like a gaffe, complete with a frustrated little fist-shake; Child smiles slightly when it happens, keeps her confidence and instantly turns the flop into a "teachable moment". If you can't manage to get the subtle nuances of your character when you're doing a verbatim remake of an actual television program starring the person you're imitating, how exactly do you qualify as a great actress?"

And do watch his Meryl Streep vs. Julia Child video!.

Known Unknown বলেছেন...

sounds like they're using the theme from Moon.

The music nearly ruins the teaser. Dreadful.

Known Unknown বলেছেন...

Very cool.

Is Mariska Hargitay not available?

She'd be a much better Palin.

Fred4Pres বলেছেন...

I like that playful gleam in Streep's eye. It is sexy.

Jason বলেছেন...

Heh. For a second, I thought it was Johnny Depp playing the Mad Hatter!

David বলেছেন...

So Julia Child was Prime Minister?

Wince বলেছেন...

She wanna Pearl Necklace

She's really upset with me again,
I didn't give her what she likes.
I don't know what to tell her,
Don't know what to say.
Everything got funky last night.

She was really bombed,
And I was really blown away,
Until I asked her what she wanted,
And this is what she had to say:
A pearl necklace.
She wanna pearl necklace.
She wanna pearl necklace.

She gets a charge out of bein' so weird,
Digs gettin' downright strange.
But I can keep a handle on anything,
Just this side of deranged.

She is so tough, as pure as the driven slush.
And that's not true what she's talkin' about,
It really don't cost that much.

Quaestor বলেছেন...

The doubters are giving Streep (and all film actors) too much credit if they worry whether The Iron Lady will be a hatchet job on the the career and character of the wonderful Baroness of whom many us here are so proud. The real story telling power rests in the hands of the director. Even if Meryl Streep had it in mind to make Lady Thatcher look like a buffoon/witch/sadist/megalomanic she could not accomplish her aim without the cooperation of the director, in this case one Phyllida Lloyd. From her bio she she appears to be a charter member of the Kensington/Chelsea/Mayfair Arts and Marxism Punting Society, so she's bound to be harboring some deep resentments towards her subject. However, that may not be fatal to the project. The problem with the truly great and good is that they are remarkably impervious to character assassin's weapons. During her long tenure at 10 Downing Street Margaret Thatcher was the target of some of the vile slander and calumny ever directed at a head of government, yet she cruised serenely above the filth the British Left creates and lives in like swine.

dick বলেছেন...

Phyllida Lloyd is Emma Thompson's mother. I am surprised that she didn't cast Emma in that role - or Helen Mirren.

Phil 314 বলেছেন...

Director, Phyllida Lloyd, previously did "Mama Mia", though she did previously direct opera.

So its not as if Oliver Stone was directing where we could predict the politics but...

I'm pretty skeptical about the treatment of Maggie Thatcher.

Shanna বলেছেন...

And do watch his Meryl Streep vs. Julia Child video!.

Nice! Julia Child has a warmth in that video that isn't present at all with Meryl Streep.

Big Mike বলেছেন...

What's with the weird expression on Streep's face when she tells her makeover advisors that "the pearls are absolutely non-negotiable"? That's not the look of a strong woman. Not at all.

For something completely different, here's the real Margaret Thatcher at the height of her political powers.

The Crack Emcee বলেছেন...

PaulV,

Crack, Will Streep do an honest job or whore out to moonbats like Moore will?

I'm voting for whoring. Whoring's all we've got. Everything's about whoring.

Well, not everything, but you know,...enough.

wv: "combois" - look it up. Probably stands for whoring.

Penny বলেছেন...

So Margaret Thatcher, a woman, will be portrayed by Meryl Streep, a woman, who will be directed by Phyllida Lloyd, a woman, and you think the emphasis will be on liberal and conservative politics?

Seems to me that the bases are loaded, and we're NOT playing coed baseball.

After all, gentlemen, "The pearls are absolutely non-negotiable."

caplight বলেছেন...

I will wait for Ann and Meade to go and review it. If it's another Hollywood hatchet job on a conservative I'm not gonna give them my money or my time.

rcocean বলেছেন...

Usually the Brits hate it when American actresses play British, and usually they're right. For some reason Brits are natural born actors.

But since England's Chattering classes still hate Thatcher, we won't hear many complaints.

Unknown বলেছেন...

The trailer looks...bad.

They just don't know how to deal with a powerful conservative woman, do they?

The Crack Emcee বলেছেন...

Penny,

So Margaret Thatcher, a woman, will be portrayed by Meryl Streep, a woman, who will be directed by Phyllida Lloyd, a woman, and you think the emphasis will be on liberal and conservative politics?

Seems to me that the bases are loaded, and we're NOT playing coed baseball.

After all, gentlemen, "The pearls are absolutely non-negotiable."

Then that's feminism, and feminism is NewAge, which is the belief system of liberalism.

So, yes, I think it'll be about liberalism AKA whoring, as I said.

wv: "pangn" - it's like paganism, but with non-stick cooking spray, everywhere.

Pass it to who, exactly? See the problem?
