Whats the water temp? It looks cool.

Patrick કહ્યું...

That is the very beach upon which I commented earlier in the week. It's gorgeous, and stays warmer than most beaches on Lake Superior because it remains shallow. My family and I spent o very wonderful here. Thanks for the pictures!

edutcher કહ્યું...

Excellent!!

Hope you swam, canoed, canoodled, anything that made you happy.

The blog has been a lot of hard work this year for you, I'm sure.

PS Like the pic of the beach.

Ann Althouse કહ્યું...

Not sure what the temperature was, but where it's shallow, it's fine for swimming.

chickelit કહ્યું...

"Canoe" is a word brought back to English second or third hand via Columbus. He learned it from Caribbean islanders. No doubt "canoe" had it's own word amongst the early Natives to Madeline Island. But that word, like the peoples, has apparently vanished. Or has it?

I forgot to mention that I noticed the orange and white Blogger icon that used to appear in the Bookmarks drop-down and the title bar for Althouse has been replaced by Mrs Meade's dashing profile.

A definite improvement.

wv = "canoodled" vb [perh. fr. E. dial. canoodle, n., fool, silly, lovemaker, perh. alter. of noodle, vb., dial. to play, caress, fondle the man in boat.]

Lovely. Like the first photograph very much: an idyllic scene (love the tiny human figures caught in postures of leisure), a sliver of summertime, framed by those heavy branches & their foreboding shadow.

A few years ago I wandered all over that beach looking for agates. Couldn't find any.
Back in the 60's I would have found agates. The world has gone to heck since then.
We had dinner at the Rittenhouse. Good, solid Old World hunting-lodge-style cuisine.

I have a sudden inexplicable urge for Madeline biscuits, with a nice cup of hot coffee.

What are system canoes?

reader_iam કહ્યું...

For that matter, what are system rules?

I did notice that. How did she do that? I want to do that too. I want to drip my blue puddle everywhere.

Titus કહ્યું...

It looks so pretty there, yet so vacant.

Lem Vibe Bandit કહ્યું...

I noticed the same thing.. the professors profile is up on my favorites tabs too.

Titus કહ્યું...

And, that is not really a beach Mary.

A beach is at the ocean, not on some lake.

Sorry.

sand + water = beach

Doesn't matter where those two items are located, if you can step from one to the other then you're at a beach.

And yes, that still counts if it a wading pool in the middle of a volleyball court. :D

Man,you guys are so, SO overdue for *serious* exposure to Ken Nordine.

$10 an hour

Probably mostly liability insurance.

In 1959 a whole airplane for $6.50 an hour, in Lake Placid NY, before deep pocket liability and punitive damage awards came on the scene.

KCFleming કહ્યું...

Under a gracious northern sky, the beach lovely and serene, a canoe steadily slices through shallow waters, its use made simple by the honor system, words rarely used anymore for reasons too sad to consider.

My wife and I are heading up to Madeline Island next month. It will be our first visit. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to stay in the area?

Patrick કહ્યું...

"some lake" indeed.

Tank કહ્યું...

That is sweet.

It would also be a great place for a secret video camera to watch how different people "deal" with the honor concept.

G Joubert કહ્યું...

How's the surfing? (I find myself agreeing with Titus on this one).

Aridog કહ્યું...

Test only ... on this semi open thread. My Blogger / Google identity is not working on other sites, including Blogger, and nothing posts. Wordpress works not at all, can't ever pull up WP sites. New computer, WinXP Pro+ OS, MS Office Pro 2010, all new Adobe, Autodesk, and Kodak applications, etc. Many things fixed that were not broken IMO.

If this posts here, hot dang, a small victory over the internut gremlins.

Joe Schmoe કહ્યું...

sure it's empty. not everyone has summer weekdays off like the college professoriat.

am i jealous? of course! Ann taunts me with her photos of high-end bistro food, bike path jaunts and lakefront strolls. i picked the wrong career path.

Aridog કહ્યું...

Bottom photo reminds me of the Boundary Waters canoe area near Eli Minnesota. Gorgeous ... but how is the mosquito situation at Madeline Island?

I've always felt the mosquito should be the Minnesota state bird.

KCFleming કહ્યું...

Is honor but a word?

Rialby કહ્યું...

Man, I wish I was there right now. Have a good time!

MadisonMan કહ્યું...

I've been under that pine tree many times. That is a great, great beach. Thank you so much for the pictures!

A world away from this serene scene, bombs awaken people's anger yet again.

Honor is a fine word facing corruption.
We have "Your Honor" as a salutation for judges;
"Honor thy father and thy mother" as a fifth commandment;
but we also have "honor killings" as a threat to common decency.

Right here, right now, in downeast Maine the temperature is 95 Fahrenheit. This ain't the way life is supposed to be. Generally, I would not trade downeast Maine for the shores of Lake Superior. Your photos and today's heat in Maine make for an exception. Enjoy your cool day at the beach on Lake Superior.

Harrington કહ્યું...

@Bushman: I would recommend that you stay away from "Bog Lake Outfitters" properties unless you inspect the property before you occupy. On the mainland, the people at Winfield Inn manage numerous properties, all of which are somewhat upscale. Either place, (i.e., mainland or island), is lovely with a lot to see and do.

Harrington કહ્યું...

@G Joubert: The best surfing is west of Madeleine Island, in the Keewenaw peninsula of Michigan. Best time of year is December. The elements there will definitely let you know if you have any future in surfing.
