"Palin Wanted a Tanning Bed in the Governor's House."

The NYT is picking through the Sarah Palin email oeuvre, and that's the first nonscandal extracted from the 24,000 printed pages.
Sarah Palin's tanned good looks may have gotten a bit of help.

An e-mail from the manager of the governor's house to Ms. Palin in early 2008 makes clear that Ms. Palin had inquired about the possibility of installing a tanning bed in the house.
The outrage! How can we trust a politician who would hide the source of her skin coloration?

By the way, ALL of DC is tanned! Maybe, it's just a political habit?

Do you remember when Reagan was accused of using hair dye on his head? He was so funny! And, yes. He had a spectacular head of hair!

Journalists would "sneak in," or pay barbers, for the hairs that were trimmed off. So Reagan's hair could be analyzed.

Reagan taught the world it didn't matter what the journalists said, as long as you controlled the visuals!

Tanned and ready. Sarah Palin doesn't miss a beat.

By the way, the implication that this is unspeakable luxury—a private tanning bed!—is risible. A tanning bed costs a grand or two; maybe a little more in Alaska for shipping. Meanwhile, a swimming pool costs a lot more of that and an awfully large number of not especially rich Americans, ahem, splash out for one.

The Times is publishing the e-mails, and we’re asking readers to help reporters sift through the voluminous correspondence in the coming days.
For now, it remains unclear what reporters might find in the trove of documents. Such a peek inside the workings of a state government would be unusual under any circumstances. But Ms. Palin’s celebrity, and the possibility that she might run for president, have given the effort more attention.

Or shorter version,
This is not just important work, its God's work.

Given their readership are they a little bit concerned about the bias in the "sifting"

Here's a tip to the Upper-West-Side-is-the-Universe crowd of the NYT: everyday working people use tanning salons in Alaska in an effort to mainatain healthy levels of vitamin D and to offset SAD.

My ex-girlfriend's extended family in Wasilla and Anchorage all use them: a city building inspector, a plumbing-supply business owner, a retired frameing shop owner.

I guarantee you that a week of tanning treatments costs less than one of Pope Abramson's lunch tabs.

kk म्हणाले...

And bear in mind, this is in Alaska. Where several months out of the year, there's very minimal sunlight. In a place like that, there are a couple of non-frivolous reasons to want to get some sun, even if it's artificial, low vitamin D and seasonal affective disorder being two of them.

Oh, they know. Remember O'bama refused to part with his crackberry, so NSA had to bolt on encryption?

The real scandal is that the WH staff don't use their secure WH email accounts for "sensitive" business because it will end up at NARA or subject to a subpeana. So they use gmail to hide their tracks. The Chinese know this, so in keeping safe from Judical Watch they got "spear phishing attacks from the PLA cyber team...

June 4, 2011: WASHINGTON — The computer phishing scam that Google says originated in China was directed at an unknown number of White House staff officials and set off the FBI inquiry that began this week, according to several administration officials.
Tweet 6 people Tweeted this.ShareThis .
It is unclear how many White House staff members — or those of other departments in the executive branch — might have been targeted, according to two officials with knowledge of the investigation. But the intended victims ranged across different functions in the White House, and were not limited to those working on national security, economic policy, or trade areas that would be of particular interest to the Chinese government.

Administration officials said they had no evidence any confidential information was breached, or even that many people fell for the attack by providing information that would allow a breach of their Gmail accounts. White House classified systems run on dedicated lines and information on those systems, the officials said, cannot be forwarded to Gmail accounts. But investigators are trying to determine if the attackers believed that some staff members or other officials used their personal e-mail accounts for sensitive government communications.

If you believe that nobody got speared, then you are a bigger sucker... NSA now knows who was naughty

Part of the year, Alaska is the most glorious place in this country. They have the tallest mountains, biggest forests, most and biggest wildlife, and longest coastline. And, the rest of the year, they have serious problems with SAD, etc. Imagine, a couple of hours of dark at the summer equinox, and a couple hours of light at the winter one (and worse, the poor people in, say Barrow, where there is no sun some days in the middle of winter, have a large alcohol abuse hospital that is empty in the summer, and filled by Christmas).

At the start of her bus tour I thought that she was trying to start a preference cascade, hoping to change the minds of those who said they liked her but didn't support her because she didn't have the support of enough other people. As of yesterday, I thought her gambit had failed.

Now I think that this idiocy can give her just the boost she needs. First, it solidifies the idea that she is uniquely feared and hated by the opposition, to a nearly pathological degree, which supports the "heaviest-flak-is-over-the-target" view of her. Second, it shows the lengths that the opposition (which obviously includes all elements of the MSM) will go to bring down anyone else they come to fear or hate, so it offers a foretaste of the 2012 campaign. There will be no other Republican aspirant who the primary voters can be sure of being able to withstand a media onslaught to the degree they can be sure of her. If the election is to be fought over policy-wonkery, she's not the best candidate. But if it's going to be a war, then she's the Republicans' Joan of Arc.

That's a pretty good tie-breaker for undecideds. In fact, it turns the whole "electability" issue upside down.

Goldwater was portrayed as a crazy man for his belief that the Soviet Union had to be defeated. Just the same as Ronald Reagan.

Back in 1964, there was no opposition press, no cable TV networks to stick up for Goldwater, and no internet to present the other side. In other words, the press, which was and is leftist, had free reign to portray Goldwater as an extremist.

Goldwater was right, as Reagan later proved. The correct strategy was to fight to destroy the Soviet Union.

Well, except that we don't even know that the tanning bed was for her own use, do we? Maybe it was for Todd. Now there's a scandal -- a Native American using a tanning bed.

The last time Republicans chose a candidate that terrified the majority of Americans was 1964.

Instead LBJ was elected, escalated in Vietnam and over 50,000 Americans died for nothing.

Correct. She isn't going to run anyway. It's far too much work, and she is way too lazy. She couldn't hack governor of Alaksa for Christ's sake.

Who is Christopher Titus & he threatened to kill Sarah?

Seeing Red म्हणाले...

Via Samizdata:

Noting with approval Ellen's clarification of Godwin's Law above; Glover is neither joking, nor engaging in a pitiful attempt to match Swift's Modest Proposal.

The imposition of tyranny implies convincing the mass of a people that resistance will bring a bad end. This generally requires exemplars to bring the truth home. The initial part of that process is the creation of a class of designated scapegoats who are dehumanized as a meme, and any subsequent violence is therefore justified.

The Left is creating a series of memes to justify violence. Mr. Glover is working in the Anglosphere. Here in this country we have Leftists actively threatening violence and death to conservatives. Just yesterday, "comedian" Christopher Titus publicly promised to assassinate Sarah Palin on a nationally syndicated television show. And is doubling down on it today on Twitter. For which he is praised as being 'edgy'. In Wisconsin, members of the Legislature, the Governor, AND THE MEMBERS OF THEIR FAMILIES, received written, telephone, and verbal death threats at their homes and offices; because they opposed the will of the government employees' unions. Leftist demonstrations are rife with death threats to those who oppose their projects. Is there any doubt that if circumstances allowed, they would be glad to be signing death warrants?

The only way to stop them, is to use exactly the same tactics against them. They have been given a free ride for far too long, and think they can do anything with impunity.

You didn't get my point. The game has changed. Cable TV news and the internet have leveled the field.

Indeed. Whereas before the majority of Americans would only have been able to react negatively to coverage of Sarah Palin on NBC, CBS, and ABC, now they can react negatively to her Facebook and Twitter comments as well.

She does not come across like Reagan to most people. She comes across like a squeaky Newt Gingrich.

I've seen the kind of hate attack being directed at Palin before. You must be young. The same hate attack was directed against Reagan.

Palin is going over the head of the leftist media and the political establishment, just like Reagan. She's establishing a network of her own to appeal directly to the electorate, just like Reagan.

You will continue to underestimate this woman at your own risk. Don't say you weren't warned. Of course, the left knows this, which is why they are in a virtual panic attack at their inability to destroy her.

You saw hate directed at Reagan while living in one of the most left-wing cities in America? I am deeply shocked by this revelation.

Palin is going over the head of the leftist media and the political establishment, just like Reagan. She's establishing a network of her own to appeal directly to the electorate, just like Reagan.

She's less popular than she was before she started doing that, quite unlike Reagan.

The key factor is that Reagan knew how to appeal to people who weren't hard-core conservatives. Palin does not. She's good with partisan invective, which is why Republican fans of partisan invective love her to bits. She sucks at appealing to the 70% of Americans who do not wake up in the morning thinking "man, I hope I get to hear something nasty about Democrats today".

The relevant parallel isn't Reagan, but Rush Limbaugh -- a person with public approval almost exactly mirroring Palin's. He's a genius at going around the mainstream media to get his message to the people. He's smart, well-informed, and a great speaker; quite frankly he's better than Palin in all three of those categories. But he'll never in a million years be President of anything but the Rush Limbaugh fan club.

Shouting Thomas म्हणाले...

The key factor is that Reagan knew how to appeal to people who weren't hard-core conservatives.

You just not getting it.

Yes, Reagan was hated across the country by the leftist press, and the press said the same things about him that they are now saying about Palin.

The electorate has not yet had the opportunity to learn about Palin from Palin. Her strategy is to run an end around the media and the entrenched powers of the Republican Party.

She is an innovator in her use of social media, but she is also drawing directly on the strategy Reagan employed, which is to go around her enemies, straight to the electorate.

You think the battle is over. It has just begun. I understand Palin's character because I've seen in before in my late wife. This attempt to destroy her is only steeling her resolution.

You don't know what you're up against here. I don't see Palin stopping until she wins. You'd better get used to the idea.

You keep repeating that the cards are irrevocably in place and nothing can change. You are in for one hell of a surprise. Believe me, I see it coming.

Revenant म्हणाले...

You will continue to underestimate this woman at your own risk. Don't say you weren't warned.

The only risk I'm running is that the worst President of my lifetime will wind up unexpectedly losing to the woman I voted for for Vice President in 2008.

Shouting Thomas म्हणाले...

I'm going to quote myself:

This attempt to destroy her is only steeling her resolution.

This woman is going to dig and scratch and kick and bite until she wins.

Her enemies have thrown everything they've got at Palin, and she's still standing. She's made out of very tough stuff.

Revenant म्हणाले...

The electorate has not yet had the opportunity to learn about Palin from Palin.

Did you just now fall through a wormhole from June of 2009? She's been trying the "end run around the media" strategy for a couple of years. It is not working. Look at her bus tour, for example: absolutely nobody is paying any attention to it besides (a) her existing fans and (b) lefties looking for material to use against her. The vast middle of the country that mostly thinks she's a lightweight but frankly would prefer not to think of her at all? They don't even know she's ON a bus tour. Not unless they catch a heavily-biased news blurb about her saying something stupid about Paul Revere.

Revenant म्हणाले...

This attempt to destroy her is only steeling her resolution.

This woman is going to dig and scratch and kick and bite until she wins.

If obstinate determination was sufficient to win the Presidency, the man who withstood torture at the hands of the Vietcong would not have lost to the guy who voted "present" a gajillion times.

Besides, willingness to fight isn't an appealing characteristic unless you already like the fighter. If you heard tomorrow that Obama was absolutely determined to win the Presidency and wasn't going to stop fighting until he did, would you (a) reconsider voting against him or (b) like him even less than before?

Shouting Thomas म्हणाले...

You've forgotten one element, here, Revenant.

I think that Palin is the only person out there with the character, intellect and the answers to lead the country out of the economic and moral mess into which it has descended.

Obama is the economic and moral mess that has to be cured.

Reagan didn't win just because he was determined or clever, although he was both. He won because it was absolutely essential that he win and because it was absolutely essential to the continued survival of the country that he win.

Same thing here, I think, in regard to Palin.

McCain is no Palin either. He ran a miserable campaign and didn't seem even to want to win. And he fell apart completely when it came to challenging Obama directly.

Palin won't.

The American electorate sometimes goes round and round before it makes the right decision, but in the long run it always does.

In 2008, Alaska adopted a ban on text messaging while driving.

On July 2, 2008, while engaged in a back-and-forth with staffers, her aide, Kris Perry emailed Palin: "U textin and drivin? Didn't you just pass a law... ;)"

Palin replied: "Um, no ;) I pulled over."

Hagar,

I've been over in Copenhagen (which is south of Norway) on and off the past year. January and February are just miserable, with the sun not coming up until 9:30 AM and then going done by 3 PM. And there are Solariums (tanning beds) on every other block.

So lets not say that having access to a tanning bed is all that exotic in Scandinavia.

garage mahal म्हणाले...

Paul, you're such a Palin FanGirl.

crosspatch म्हणाले...

Tanning bed means something completely different in Alaska than it does in the lower 48. It can be a health issue. They have long winters with very little sunlight. Women who don't get enough sunlight can develop terrible osteoporosis later in life. If she is couped up in an office during the short part of the year when the sun is high enough in the sky to produce vitamin D, it might be a good idea to buy a tanning bed (i.e. "sunlamp" in the old days).

The word "tanning bed" is unfortunate because of the connotation of vanity in the lower 48. In Alaska it is as much a part of one's health routine as a treadmill.

But it is neither true nor widely believed, so I don't consider it a useful point when discussing Palin's electability.
