The Blutarsky/Feingold Philosophy.

John Belushi as Blutarski in "Animal House":

Russ Feingold at the Wisconsin Capitol last Sunday:

And a few weeks ago, here at the Capitol:

DSC_0172

"It's not over until we say it's over." That's the political theory. Meanwhile....
Unions representing public workers in Wisconsin filed a lawsuit in federal court on Wednesday to block the state's new curbs on collective bargaining... [claiming] the controversial measure is unconstitutional because it creates two classes of public workers in the state -- those covered by the new rules and those exempt from them.
What? Treating police differently from teachers is supposed to be an invidious discrimination under the Equal Protection Clause?! There's no suspect or quasi-suspect classification, so the courts will give this minimal scrutiny. How is this anything but a frivolous lawsuit?

Blutarsky/Feingold marches on.

NOTE: The "Animal House" epilogue tells us what ultimately happens to each character, and the biggest joke is that Blutarsky becomes a U.S. Senator! (Thanks to Bruce Hayden, in the comments, for reminding me of that.)

I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.

And they're just the guys to do it.

MadisonMan বলেছেন...

Men in capris also deserve derision.

He has a point. The frivolous law suits for delaying changes are not over until Feingold says they are over.

SunnyJ বলেছেন...

Alinsky rules: Use their own rule book against them.

The goals is to wear you down, drip..drip..drip...drip until the system gives way to let them have their way.

Personally, I think it would be great if the courts agreed...and said everyone in the pool...the new pool under the new law.

Then we could observe how well solidarity works, when one group brings down the other.

নামহীন বলেছেন...

Game over. There's no way the public employees can lose now that the Madison stagehands and projectionists have expressed their support.

The lady with the blue jacket and long grey hair looks like she was sent from central casting in response to a call for an "aging liberal with a look of concern."

Remember that in the final scene, Blutarsky became a Senator. Could his name have really been Feingold?

jimbino বলেছেন...

The case seems to offer a good opportunity for the courts to refudiate their degree of scrutiny nonsense when it comes to civil rights violations.

There should be only one degree of scrutiny: All laws infringing on civil rights should be overturned unless they serve a "compelling state interest."

In the actual case, however, the court would then logically find that compelling union dues is illegal since it violates the rights of unwilling workers with no compelling state interest in forcing unions on everyone.

Seeing Red বলেছেন...

Glad they have the money to do this.

DENIAL

There's no recovery if you're stuck in DENIAL. Which is the first stage of grief.

You know, when the WHIGS went down the toilet (on a chicanery played by Henry Clay, Speaker of the House. When he tossed out Andrew Jackson's 1932 victory. And, handed the presidential prize to the son of John Adams.)

John Adams, our President #2, was the first ONE-TERMER! His son also served only one term. And, Andrew Jackson ZOOMED BACK IN ... And, old man. To win the next two presidential elections. 1836. And, 1840. Henry Clay's WHIGS got squashed like a bug.

You know what Old Hickory meant, don't cha? Fans of Andrew Jackson, so upset at the STEAL ... would go into communities ... and plant HICKORY TREES.

We just don't teach history, anymore. Bastards took it over to lie. And, then make kids memorize dates. And, crapped on our history.

Oh, after DENIAL. THere's ANGER. Maybe, that's where freaks like Russ Feingold are now. (But Feingold's no Henry Clay! He's just a sore-loserman. Which is what happens when senate seats pass from under your tuchis. To someone else.)

Of course, Teddy's seat flew out under great fanfare. Did you see his Catholic funeral? Stinker didn't deserve that, either.

Will our history books ever be reclaimed?

"It's not over until we say it's over." That's the political theory.

All this means, I think, is that the current (see picture) grey-haired reflexive-leftists protesting about it will still think it's "a battle" in 30 years when they're totally doddering.

Just like the rejects of the early 70s do now.

Well, also, it allows all sorts of wonderful mockery the next time things seem to go their way; just throw that line back at them and watch them blithely pretend it's totally different because they're on the side of right and you just can't say that, you anti-Democratic monster.

Feh.

rcocean বলেছেন...

Of course its not over. Nothing in this country is over until the courts say its over.

How odd--and revelatory--that so many here--all or most of whom seem to of the "America is Great" crowd and are, I presume, working people--see fit to deride other American citizens and working people for exercising their First Amendment rights to petition the government for redress of their grievances. How odd, also, the scorn that is heaped by (presumably) working people on other working people who are simply trying to protect their stake in "the American Dream," (that is, jobs with decent wages and benefits) by striving to protect their rights to collectively bargain for their own working conditions. This is the essence of participatory democracy in action!

Agree or disagree with their aims, (I agree with them, as if that needed to be said), all Americans should applaud their right to take action and their interest and vigor in doing so.

Did you all similarly disdain the Tea Party gatherings?

Phil 314 বলেছেন...

They embody the worst instincts of all totalitarians. The sooner they are flushed down the national shitter, the better off we'll all be.

SunnyJ বলেছেন...

This is where you have to see that Sarah Palin made a good decision for the state of Alaska and it's citizens by removing herself.

She saw the endlessness of the lefts desire to use the system and cost the state money, time and the attention to governance...and did the egoless thing by opting out. While it seemed like a win...they drove her out...she was able to see that the real win at that point was stopping the grinding down of the state's governance life.

All of those suits were directed at her personally, very different than at legislation here in Wisconsin. Repubs need to just stay focused and keep rolling along, remain commited themselves to rule of law, follow the rules, don't get cute and the people will stay with them.

Robert Cook বলেছেন...

So I guess we can mark down Lincolntf as a hater of America and of democracy.

Thought so.

Foobarista বলেছেন...

This is classic leftist thought: it's only "democratic" if the lefties win.

Eric বলেছেন...

Animal House was a long time ago. The moral and intellectual standards of our Representatives and Senators have deteriorated to the point that Mr. Blutarsky would no longer wish to be among them.

Martin L. Shoemaker বলেছেন...

Robert Cook, you're the only one here hating democracy. I know you'd like to use rhetorical thuggery to suppress our freedom of speech, but it's not gonna happen.

Peter বলেছেন...

"to protect their rights to collectively bargain for their own working conditions. This is the essence of participatory democracy in action!"

The First Amendment provides freedom of assembly and association as well as freedom of speech. And so, the right to form and join a union is presumably protected.

BUT free speech surely does not include a right to force others to listen to you.

And so, although government employees will remain free to bargain individually or collectively, units of government within Wisconsin have no obligation to bargain with them (except as established through statute).

And that, too, is democracy in action. For, who should determine what behavior is acceptable for on-duty government employees- their union, or the People, through their elected representatives? Who should determine what level of staffing is appropriate- those who pay for it, or those who provide it?

“Meticulous attention should be paid to the special relationships and obligations of public servants to the public itself and to the government. All Government employees should realize that the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service … The employer is the whole people, who speak by means of laws enacted by their representatives” – Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Drew বলেছেন...

This is not the citizens seeking redress of grievances from the gov't. This is the government negotiating with itself to determine how much they're going to take from the citizens. Or to put in terms of the employee/employer relationship -- here we have employees negotiating with other employees to decide how much they're going to take from the employer, with the employer never getting a say.

Oh, we do get a say at the ballot box, but the employees have determined to ignore the ballot box and keep on doing what they want to do.

Those are not capris/manpris, they are "plus fours". Normally worn with calf-high socks in more northern climates. Good for mountain climbing/hiking/rock climbing, as the knees are protected, while allowing maximum flexibility and heat transfer. Unfortunately, English dandies (esp. stoopid King-who-abdicated for an American gay divorcee) popularized the plus-four variety. They are sometimes called knickers here, but in Oz, knickers can mean something else.

Knickers are a practical, functional clothing choice for vigorous outdoorsmen. If you're laughing at somebody wearing them, it's because you're not man enough to wear them yourself.

Robert Cook বলেছেন...

"I bet one of the many disagreements I'd have with your statement is 'decent wages and benefits'. The teacher benefits were better than the average worker. I assume you don't equate 'decent' with 'better'."

I equate "decent" with whatever the workers have been able to negotiate for themselves and which allows them to pay their bills and have disposable income left over. Whether any particular school employee is making more money than any particular private employee is irrelevant. The oft-repeated "fact" (sic) that the teachers are awash in riches and drive bejeweled caddies as they sneer at their less-well-paid privately employed peers in the community does not suffice as a convincing argument against their legitimate desire to retain their collective bargaining right--or even as convincingly factual in its own right.

"And don't you think 'Its' not over till we win' is an anti-democratic statement. Particularly if the 'we' is in the minority?"

Not at all. This is the nature of democracy. Rights won must always be defended every generation against being lost.

Moreover, it's an aspirational statement and is meant to keep those in the fight from becoming discouraged.

Finally, benefits enjoyed by the majority typically are first fought for and gained by a minority. The outcome of the various fights for workers' rights around the country will foretell the treatment all American workers can expect in future. As it is, we're rapidly becoming a nation of unemployed or underemployed serfs to the financial elites. Rather than scorning those who have good pay or benefits and who are fighting to keep them (or the right to continue negotiating for themselves), we should all be demanding the same rights and have the same expectations for ourselves.

Those in education seem to think, because they study education, that they are so deserving of their salaries for being so educated.

The education curriculum in every state is a joke, and anyone who has a pulse can get an education degree, and then go on to get a ridiculously high salary for that degree.

And the school administrators at every level are even worse. The unions would rather stick to their guns, and keep their high salaries in Wisconsin, than save programs that benefit their kids. Admin cares even less about saving programs.

The problem is conceptual. Reasonable people see each political event as a self contained mattter in which a conclusion is reached and life goes on. Such people look to live in peace and make positive assumptions about the good will and good sportsmanship of those that oppose them. They see opposition as being linked to an issue and therefore temporary rather than to a condition that will never change. The lesson is that after every victory such as the recent one in Wisconsin every method conceivable must be employed to keep these folks on the run. No rest, no quarter, no compromise. Hectoring, pursuit, confrontation, marginalization, scorn, economic reprisal, etc. It must be tireless, broad gauge and conducted with no limit in sight. So Robert Cook, since you and your fellow Obama/Feingold Party members are threatening to murder Republicans and their families and bomb public buildings, how should we respond to you? An acquaintance of mine is the president of the local school district's para-educator union. After they spent a solid weekend or two re-negotiating a contract, her comment was "Our board came through for us." What? I thought the school board was there to represent the taxpayer, not the unions. But then in this district, the unions had campaigned heavily in the previous election to get a board favorable to the unions.

School administrator don't want to fight the unions, so they give in on things such as seniority and evaluations.

This represents what happens over and over: conservatives think an issue discussed and voted on is settled. Progressive-socialist-democrats think an issue discussed and voted on is just the first draft, and they keep coming back until they get what they want. They are willing to take something, any thing, to kick their agenda down the road until it takes the final form they want. As bad as the Health Care Reform act was, it is just a prelude. The socialist-democrats want a single payer system. Bankrupting all the private insurance companies is just one step on the way.

This is also why they will go to the mat against tort reform forever, no matter how many blameless doctors or corporations are victimized by the scum-sucking pirates of the plaintiff's bar. Take away the government employee unions and the lawyers, and the Democrats will be bankrupt tomorrow.
