Although Gov. Scott Walker put the measure in his budget, leaders in the state Legislature say it is unlikely to remain there in its current form.ADDED: WisPolitics reports on an interview with Scott Walker:
Under the plan, UW-Madison would get a 21-member board of trustees and more autonomy from the state to raise tuition, set salaries, build facilities and make purchases.
But the UW Board of Regents and other chancellors in the UW System oppose the split, arguing that all of the campuses in the System need more freedom from regulation.
He said the flexibility that would come with moving UW-Madison to a public authority model would help preserve it as a world-class institution in the face of cuts to state aide and that he supports offering other campuses more flexibility, as well. This is a good time for me to post a picture of a sign Meade acquired in the Capitol rotunda during the protests:
Note the blue painter's tape, carefully preserved by Meade to establish the provenance of his acquisition.

There's a phrase about a pot and a kettle that comes to mind, at least in regards to more freedom and less regulation.
Isn't the motivation here to free up UW-Madison from keeping the small colleges afloat as the educational bubble bursts? They know that the political clout of Madison and its football team will insure its ongoing budgets will be funded so long as they are not tied to sharing losses as the whole funding pie gets smaller.
The question is why the devil is interested.
Your carpet looks like Puffed Wheat cereal.
Yes, yes, shame on you, Biddy…
and shame on the Republicans in the Legislature…
and shame on the voters who put them there…
and shame on Judge Prosser…
and shame on the voters, especially those in Waukesha County, who renewed his appointment and may be the same voters shamed in item three, but maybe not, so let's single them out to make sure that everyone who needs to be shamed is, in fact, shamed…
and shame on that guy who stood his ground in the Capitol rotunda during the occupation…
and shame on Ramona Kitzinger (oh, wait, she's already been shamed and has recanted)…
and shame on Althouse & Meade…
and so on…
Provenance?
You guys opening a WI protest art museum with all the union mass-produced signs and the ones in crayon?

You obviously have no Yorks.
I would be very interested in knowing how the faculty senate vote broke down by discipline, money-providers (i.e., hard sciences) vs. money-takers (liberal arts).
It's high time the system schools pulled their own weight. If it takes freeing the UW-Madison from its shackles, then so be it. No more free rides.
" arguing that all of the campuses in the System need more freedom from regulation."
The hypocrisy of the reactionary left never fails to astound.

They could, but the Smithsonian already took all the good stuff.
Biddy's a dyke. Gross.
The Chancellor of UW-Madison wants to be free, free at last. That deserves a massive demonstration over at the Capitol in favor of setting the rich and powerful Madison educators free from slavery shackles to Junior Colleges all around Wisconsin. Dane county should secede too.
I never understood the necessary organizational connection of UW- Platteville or Stevens Point to UW-Madison. It strikes me as a good idea to make UW-Madison somewhat independent and I hope Biddy and Gov. Walker get the job done.

I know! That's what I like about it.

Meade kept a small pile of things, but it's so small it's absurd. He's got his ticket to Walker's budget address as a "guest of the legislature"... you know, that thing that drove Abe Sauer crazy.
I wonder what the lefty professors think of the idea that rich, successful entities should spread their wealth among less successful entities.
What was that picture of that piece of paper taken on, a giant rice cake?
