OT: But really the same thing.

"What appear to be more than 1,000 pro-union protesters from around the Washington region have converged on 601 13th St. NW, trapping inside their arch-enemy du jour, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.
An employee on the scene said that the crowd numbered about 2,000 people, and they'd taken over the building's lobby."

The beat goes on..and on,and on.....

You can say it again, but pensions are are paid for by the workers. None of it is paid by taxpayers.

Gheez. All of it comes from taxpayer money except in a few special cases where fees and fines provide income for the salaries, pensions, etc.

Try to understand this: If a teacher's salary works out to $1,000 per week. According to the figures Jay provided, each week the taxpayers would pay an additional $130 towards the that teacher's pension plan.

If the teacher payed 6.2% towards her pension out of her own $1,000 salary, that would save the taxpayers $62 per week or $3,224 per year. Add that up for every teacher in Wisconsin and you get a pretty big number.

I understand why the teachers are upset. It's no fun bringing home less money. But, we're tapped out.

Where I work we have a built in system that flexes according to our profitability. As an employee owned company, we get a distribution of profits based on company profit AND our personal performance. Some years that's equaled about 20% of our annual gross salary. Other years a lot less and some people lost their jobs due to the bad economy a year and a half ago and also a few months after 9-11 we had layoffs.

Frankly, I consider myself luckier than hell to have my job and work where I do. My retirement plan primarily consists of stock in the company which I am given some every year based on my longevity and salary level.

I pay approx half of my family health insurance which is an average plan.

As you can see, I have a tremendous incentive to work hard and perform at as a high a level as possible to keep my job and do my share to maximize company success and profits.

When public employee union members, who have incredible job security and only need to perform well enough to avoid showing total incompetence, start whining and acting out like the protesters in Madison about giving up some of their security and paying a little more out of their own pocket, I have minimal sympathy.

Welcome to the real world.

I don't really know, but from my extremely limited understanding, and I might well be wrong, I thought unions were originally meant to prevent partisan hiring and firing. That, with a change in administration, all the teachers still got to keep their jobs.

Shiloh, not a non sequitur to me, not at all. As far as the making money/asking for buys is concerned, I know that I love to make me some money! And if this blog were mine, and if offered, I'd be sorely tempted. It changes things a bit, it does. But I think it's ok and we can all take it in stride. It's who she is, there's a match (I think) so it's not that jarring.

Civil service rules are what prevents that. You might notice that even in non-union states, the teachers don't all get canned every 4 years.

I like that quote about the squirrel could "go ballistic".

Mary

Thanks for that info. As I understand it the Wall Street Journal says that getting out of the WEA Trust insurance deal and folding them into the same insurance program as all other state workers would save WI $68 million. I think that's annually.

I wish I could find that article but I think it's pay walled now.

Off to go find that spread sheet.

i think that first column is savings realized if the teachers pay that 12% toward their premiums, as required in the bill. Savings from buying insurance elsewhere is entirely different.

When I said I'd be sorely tempted, I meant that like Althouse, I'd probably take the Amazon thing.

Yeah, she could do a column, but something tells me she likes the video format a lot, and won't abandon that easily. Maybe some vid on NYT. The Post is moving toward much more video (a mistake IMO) so maybe the NYT will too.

Doesn't sound realistic to me. Firing entire teaching staff of school districts during administration changes?

Chennaul বলেছেন...

Mary

Ooooh interesting.....because the total savings for that didn't add up.

Why wouldn't they include the saving from getting out of WEA Trust in that pdf?

Do they still have to accomplish that....

Yep that's it...possibly. They should have included that somewhere in the pdf like you said.

HT, the Amazon thing is amazing and win-win for both. Blogs capture a lot of eyeballs for people not already on board with Amazon.

Hoosier Daddy বলেছেন...

Civil service rules are what prevents that. You might notice that even in non-union states, the teachers don't all get canned every 4 years.

Not to mention the obvious inefficiency of having to hire and orient thousands of brand new teachers each year. Granted, its the government we're talking about but I still throw the bs flag on that.

Granted there was a time being a 'public employee' was a low pay occupation (hence the term; 'good enough for government work') although considering the fact that nearly every state is looking at billions in pension and benefit shortfalls illustrates that the pendulum has swung in the other direction.

Again, saw a link where the average Wisconsin public school teacher has a total compensation package of a hair over $100K. That's nothing to sneeze at.

In Indiana the average starting salary for a K-12 teacher is $30K (not benefits). My first full time job out of college in 1990 had me making $19K and I didn't have summers off.

That's a bullshit argument anyway.

Chennaul বলেছেন...

Hell I don't even live in WI just over interested.

Each locality has to decide on the WEA Trust insurance-Walker can't get that done at the state level?

Hell I saw somewhere- where in the Green Bay area the local dems were extending the contracts to nullify what Walker did get passed. Or something like that.

Ugh-as to union in your parking lot maybe they'll get bored with it soon enough.

A good bit of Ann's work, including some video, IIRC, ends up on the Gray Lady, and she'll probably be in more venues after the last month's work, so she's in a good place, literarily speaking. She can do as much, or as little, as she likes.

What the Lefties can't stand, as I noted earlier, is that she's getting all that attention and they go unnoticed. They're supposed to be the ones getting offers to go on the news and live streams and all the rest, not some older woman who shoots down all their cherished nonsense.

Tantrums seem to be all the Left has left.

I believe that's the average Milwaukee Public School Teacher, not the average for the state as a whole. Politifact had an article on it at some point.

I thought it was interesting that salaries were pretty flat the past couple years, but benefit costs really jumped -- to the tune of 30+% -- which I'm guessing has to be Health Care. If Milwaukee PSs are like Madison's, they have a pretty Rolls Royce-y plan.

Althouse got schooled today.

First, the host lulls the guest into thinking everything's cool. Just the facts, please. It's all good, hey, we're a couple of girlfriends just chillin' and talkin'.

(Next, the setup)
MK: Wisconsin mandates the teaching of labor history.
AA: That's OK, it's American history.

(Finally, the bodyslam)
MK: Including mandating slagging Reagan.
AA: (eek!, she's got me, what do I do: own it, backpedal, or re-direct the question to something I want to talk about)
AA: Well, I ... teaching propaganda isn't right, we should encourage critical thinking skills.
AA: (whew, she almost had me, good thing I had already blogged about that)

In the bigs, there are no easy interviews. Questions are either a setup, or a bodyslam. The host is always prepared (she has a research staff). What counts is how the guest responds to the bodyslam, in both content and delivery. If the guest responds in an audience-pleasing way, expect some callbacks.

All sides heard what they wanted to hear from AA. But notice the craftiness, Wisconsin's educational standards remain unjudged. Well played, Althouse!

You've got a chip in the big game now!

I can't believe I am coming so late to the commentary game, especially since I saw Ann's Fox News appearance live, as I dressed to go out.

I have read about 50 comments, and agree with Fred4Pres that you closed strong -- in fact, stronger than Megyn Kelly, who I adore. She is one tough Irish broad (HIGH praise).

As Ann settled into her role as interviewee, her points became more focused, and I got a true sense that she was concerned about the kids who are being shanghaied to prop up their teachers'/parents' political agendas -- not on their time off, but in consequence to their teachers' active dissimulation.

What Kelly struggled to emphasise, which is Ann's larger, more meaningful point, is that teachers do not just teach 1-2-3s and the odd bit about George Washington. They stand for integrity and for kids' welfare, not for the power of their union.

What good is it to have power, if you obtained it by lying, harranguing, and suborning?

Well done, Ann. We're seeing the first of many interviews on national TV, methinks.

I'm guessing you won't find the video of my darlings singing "Solidarity Forever" while doing an art project at the kitchen table very charming then. In Madison each child will absorb $600 in budget cuts - when they ask us why they don't have music class any more, or why they have 40kids in their class, we'll be able to say, "remember those chants at the capitol...?"

Good job not taking the bait on the claims about required teaching in Wisconsin.

Mick বলেছেন...

This is the Left-wing way. They know that rational adults could never accept their silly premises, so they attempt to indoctrinate the children.
The whole "KONY" thing was aimed at kids on facebook, and it turns out that the"Invisible Children" organization is a sham, and a campaign for the re-election of the Usurper. It's basically a brainwashing video with lots of Red (communist) themes.
