Okay, I'll try not to indulge a glib Brownshirts-style comparison. But it does give me a little visual reminder of what I loathe about Chicago's political culture, and the ridiculous way our Fearless Leader seems so utterly beholden to its political dramatis personae and their uniquely self-centered worldview.

DinobotPrime said...: Honestly, with the selection we had for mayoral candidates, Rahm was the best of the worst candidates running for mayor in this city. Let me put it this way, in the 14 years I have live in this city, unless you are member of the Democratic party and a certified member of the Chicago political Machine, there is no way in hell that any Conservative Republican, Tea Party, Independent or Blue Dog Democrat will have any chance to be elected much less find his or her name on any ballot especially if that candidate is more than willing to take on the Chicago political Machine.

That aside, does Obama reckon how tiresome and unpleasant the Chicago scene appears to people ouside it?

Obama, supposedly the most cosmopolitan human being ever created, is completely enthralled by (and in the thrall of) this petty, mercenary political culture of Chicago.

Indeed, Obama seems to weirdly believe Chicago is some kind of modern Athens. At least, he must believe all the most talented people in America hail from there.

Or so he would like it to appear. In reality, he seems intimidated by outsiders. At least with the Bush brand of loyalty you can understand it's a tribal thing: i.e. my daddy/brother/whatever trusted you pal, so I'm gonna trust you. Or something to that effect.

With Obama, it's more like: I'm not comfortable dealing with people I haven't been in Mutual Appreciation Mode with for the past twenty years.

At least Rahm wears his SOBiness on his sleeve, which is a bit more respectable than all the high-class pretensions to civility and rational debate.; 2/23/11, 12:19 AM

The 2010 census showed Chicago population has dropped to below that seen in the 1920s, a 6.9% decline in 10 years. Some escaped to the suburbs, some left the state altogether.

While the US population grew by 9.7% since 2000, Illinois' population rose just 3.3%, to 12.86 million.

As a result, Illinois lost one House seat in Congress.

Yet the best thing Rahm can propose is a vaguely defined (and union oriented) plan to cut (hold on to your hats) $50 million, which is virtually nothing compared to the rest of the state's $5+ billion debt.
