"Though Mr. McLure never became a well-known writer in the sense of having New York cachet, he had a following ..."

Not a New York following, so it hardly counts, but ... you know ... he had a following. He's gay so we had to write this obit, even though he wasn't "New York gay."

But gay.

So there's that.

His sister lives in Niceville. My goodness.

RIP, playwrite.

Does, "garrulous", mean his plays seemed to drag on forever?

His career sounds like a typical MFA student sans working as a Starbucks barista. Must be a slow death-news cycle. I bet the NYTs editorial staff looks back on 2009 fondly, when celebrities of stature were dropping like flies.

Ut, your first comment cracks me up.

I wonder if it would be funny in New York though.

"I wonder if it would be funny in New York though."

It would be hilarious in the Bronx, but not in the sense of having "Manhattan cachet."

If a little-known long-winded playwright dies in California, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Seriously, though, I seem to recall we may have touched upon one of his works in some Playwright courses I took a looong time ago, but there were so many weirdos it may or may not have been him.

if he gets a commemorative stamp, he might end up with a "Postal Service Cachet", philatelically-speaking.

Not if it was a heterosexual.

Seriously, as a rule abortion threads, currently (285) and creationism/evolution threads are real "crowd pleasers". Union threads are helped at Althouse 'cause of AA's blog location.

Another topic which would have gathered interest rapidly a year ago is mama grizzly, but nowadays even Reps concede palin's a grifter/charlatan frickin' joke!

Condolences to McLure's family. May he RIP.

Damn, not another public employee union thread.

Damn

No, that would be a Wall St. CEO thread and after Walker got punk'd today, include him as a charlatan.

and so it goes ...

No, that would be a Wall St. CEO thread and after Walker got punk'd today, include him as a charlatan.

Are you referring to the Wall Street that donated heavily to Obama, or some other Wall Street?

Oh, and yeah, Walker got 'punked'. Ooh. Poor guy. How will he ever survive this?

Oh. Yeah. That was on the national news tonight, and even my lefty roommate - a union member at a local school district - thought the phone call thing was pathetic. LOL

Anecdotal evidence is always quite compelling lol, truthful or not notwithstanding.

And yes, Obama kowtowing to Wall St. is one of many reasons his supporters stayed home in 2010 as the financial reform bill was underwhelming ...

It may be anecdotal, but as a public sector education employee at a state college, with roommates from the local school district, I like to think I have a good sense of how people in my neck of the woods feel about this whole Wisconsin thing - and so far, I'm not seeing a lot of sympathy for the unions there, even from union members here.

Does that mean there is no sympathy? No, but at least here this whole thing isn't playing well for the democrats. And in a state that is the bluest of blue, that doesn't bode well. :)

I've actually been in two different productions of the one act, Lone Star, and I can tell you that it is a powerful and funny play.

Also, "I saw Hud nine times."

I haven't read anything by James McLure (or maybe I did and didn't know the author) but could determine his gayness simply by hearing his name was James McLure and that his plays were garrulous.
Then again, Marvin Gaye was not in fact gay, and was not a nerd, despite having the name Marvin, so the name doesn't always match the stereotype.
But very often it does. Could the very naming of a child be one of the factors in determining their gayness? (probably not, but no reason not to throw it out there).

By the way, RIP James McLure.

edutcher, I think it means that the actors, they yammer.

I knew James McLure since Junior High. He was a brilliant actor and incredibly gifted playwright. All this BS most are posting are from people that have no clue about his works. Garrulous was intended to imply "wordy"... but his plays were full of character and style. The first of the southern playwrights and he and Beth Henley both attended SMU and were contemporaries and best friends. Oh, and he was not gay. What a random prejudiced "slam". Get a life.
