Pick a potted tree up from the Friends of the Urban Forest in San Francisco, enjoy it through the holidays, and it will then be planted as a street tree. No need to build a forest on your own property, and no annual maintenance fee. But while non traditional trees include evergreens, the odds of getting a conifer are low.
According to this Canadian study, artificial trees are better for the environment only after twenty years of use. So the professor will have to use hers till she's in her eighties.
