He was actually tiptoeing, which is sneaky and stealthy. The media have them a new target. Palin now seems so normal after her TLC series. The 24 hour media need a new twisted evil person to practice their slander skills upon.

In other words; is he the life of parties he's never attended? If he punches you in the face, do you have to fight the urge to thank him? Do sharks have a week dedicated to him? Do even his enemies list him as their emergency contact? Does he speak fluent French, in Russian?
All kidding aside...a pox on his house, and his re-election bid, for missing those votes.
I don't have a problem with skirting, as in "skirting the issue", but I do think that it is an imprecise use here. Why not just say, "he refused to attend"?
Before I was self-employed, my employers would not have accepted "it's been planned for over a year" as an excuse to miss an important meeting.

He is a politician, after all.
He seems to be going the Ah-nold route, make a big show of how macho you are during the campaign and then make like a wuss once elected.
A name is only a name, but if anything, Manchin tends to call to mind munchkin more than anything overtly masculine.

I would guess in West Virginia, a no vote plays better than a yes. So he opted for "present" instead.

All the time. Being distracted by the power of words and names has a long history and comes in many guises. So at least we're in good company.

Is it getting worse as you get older? Eventually you may become so focused on the word choices people make that you won't actually be able to communicate with anyone. If you were a minor character in a book or movie, people would discuss what you symbolize.
