People hate cross country skiing. They prefer to drive.
But I have to pay for the grooming expenses and land purchases like the Ice Age Trail, for $2.6 million dollars, whether I like it or not.

ty is right. Imagine spending time with your mate being active in the sunlight, when you could be sitting in the dark passively absorbing a movie. I don't see how skiing stimulates the economy, either, once the skis have been bought.
Some people just can't wait to start walking with canes.

@Meade: Is there still cross-country skiing at Owen Park? Nice view of the city from there.
25 years ago, there was trail there that included a gentle downslope through the trees which led to a small footbridge (no handrails) over a frozen creek. You had just a few seconds to decide to cross it or to balk. It was a great test of confidence and skill. Just don't get all Sonny Bono).
There used to be good skiing over at Olin Park (also with wooded hills and great views across Lake Monona).
Finally an occasion to dress up.

I prefer the skirt. I was wearing leggings and thick fleece pants, because it was so cold — 10°. But actually, skiing, it felt hot. I could have dressed more lightly.
It seems like just yesterday when Althouse bought those skis and that beautiful jacket.

It's all relative. Compared to walking or snowshow'ing, X-country is low labor indeed.

Didn't the photographer get pissed that you kept skiing into his shots? If that was me, I'd be all, like, "WTF Ann? Quit skiing into the frame!" The first one is my favorite--of the...two. "Ah! A sweeping, majestic snowscape, accented with delicate trees lineating toward an empty swath of--WTF ANN?!"

This looks like Odana Hills (though I have a hard time finding hills worthy of being called hills there), so it's a park that has been around for a long time and collects money from those who choose to cross-country ski. Stop feeling sorry for yourself. This will not add to Scott Walker's ever-expanding deficit.

Rahm is going to be the Mayor. No one can stop him. Yet, I wonder if this is right. Can people with power simply use legal tactics, media, and army of volunteers to get what they want? Is this what the Democratic Party stands? What does it tell about the GOP or others who have no back-bone? This Chicago story is so sad and it is troubling that it is not being discussed in the media. Your thoughts?

The skiing is as leisurely as you want, and the opportunity for contemplation is as good as you have while walking... better, actually, because it's less jarring. You glide along....
It's not like downhill skiing where gravity determines your speed. More like walking/running. And I'm doing it for the pleasure and beauty, not for some grim shape-up program.

People were walking around here wearing short sleeves today. They are a bit nuts. I, however, am sensible and wore long sleeves.
Know what would be great after a nice day of skiing? A big bowl of steaming mussels, that's what.
I'm glad to see that people up in the land of ice and snow are sensible enough not to wear shorts in cold weather. Here in Florida, it is down below freezing outside, and yet some of the people I work with are in complete denial and still wearing shorts! Not me, not in the winter. Don't need frostbitten knees, thank you kindly.

Midwesterners are pretty rule-abiding though. As this XC trail is on a golf course, I'm guessing they don't want people skiing on the greens.
