What do alumni attending their 15th law school reunion want to hear a lawprof talk about for 15 minutes...

... over dinner at 8 p.m. tonight?

UPDATE: Thanks for all your help! I quoted quite a few of the comments a the end of the speech, which I think was pretty well received.

How you aren't really rich. That's the ticket.

Bless their hearts. At my reunions, I want to see my classmates. I'm not interested in the profs. Nobody will mind if you say "hello" and then sit down again. Unless they're going to get CE credit, of course.

Which students you and other professors were sleeping with 15-18 years ago.

This will hold their attention for the full 15 minutes.

The only thing that the alumni want to hear from the lawprof is: "I'll get the next round of drinks."

Are you going to blog about this?

The University of Illinois has denied 1960s radical William Ayers emeritus faculty status after trustees Chairman Christopher Kennedy noted Ayers dedicated a book to, among others, the man who killed Kennedy's father, Robert F. Kennedy.

Let me add, it will also make the next faculty meeting more interesting than usual.

Tell them you needed to teach them the law. But, you know that for the litigators, they have come to the realization it's much more about the facts, than the law.

Then a slideshow of your photos.

Seriously?

They want to hear about themselves, if they can be remembered at all. I'm amazed teachers can do so. People always love hearing about their past. What was going on in the world, the city, and campus in 1995. Much better if you can dredge up any details about them personally.

If they are listening at all, it would be to reminiscences, taking them back to a time before they measured out their lives with coffee spoons.

Put a picture on the stage and call it a cafe.

Talk about past hopes, fears and uncertainty as students are why they are now skilled men and women in a great profession. They got far more out of their struggling experience than they realized at the time. That will win the audience over with a sincere approach, which is seldom tried.

How about:

"Nobody gets to write your destiny but you. Your future is in your hands. Your life is what you make of it. And nothing -- absolutely nothing -- is beyond your reach, so long as you’re willing to dream big, so long as you’re willing to work hard. So long as you’re willing to stay focused on your education, there is not a single thing that any of you cannot accomplish, not a single thing. I believe that."

Thats funny on so many levels.

...university's board chair Chris Kennedy, who said (referring to his father, Robert Kennedy) "I intend to vote against conferring the honorific title of our university to a man whose body of work includes a book dedicated in part to the man who murdered my father.

Hey Chris, do ya think bombing the Pentagon should have been your first clue? At least you draw the line somewhere...

Prof. Your blog is the best. You are open to different views. No left/right blog does that. Keep it up.

What you can say (and then post so that we may benefit) is along these lines?

+++++

Why do I [AA] blog? (main rationales)

When do I blog? (is it 24/7?)

How do I blog? (technologies you use)

What have been some unanticipated items?

What are some benefits?

Do I want to quit blogging?

Why do not I?

What next?

Why not YouTube blog?

Do I have dreams about being a NYT columnist?

It was very well received. Funny, insightful and a little "inciteful." Excellent speech, thank you for your work and for coming to the reunion.
