Kynefski...donno, but I use Turbo Tax Delux and it works great, right down to e-filing federal and state returns. Much easier and I'd fall asleep.
I've extensive experience with the IRS and I'm pretty sure I prefer the 3rd party applications. Less mistakes.
When Geithner said Turbo Tax made the mistake for him ($250K error??) I can absolutely with out any doubt tell you he was "prevaricating"...it is virtually and literally impossible.
My sign will say "Fuck the Alternative Minimum Tax and All Who Allow It To Exist."
For me a nice tax and health reform would be to prevent my astonishingly high medical expenses and relatively high state tax rate from reaming me via AMT every year.
This is my last year with TurboTax. They pretty much punted on the AMT this year-- leave you to figure out everything yourself. Luckily I've got until May 11 this year. Neener, neener, neener!
don't let the facts get in anyone's way here. when the tax rate (lowest in years) runs over you with the truth you can always say you didn't see it coming.
The alternative minimum tax is just a poorly disguised tax increase which is the trend the past twenty years. Years ago it was just applied to obscure and recondite items of tax preferance like intangible drilling costs. But they made more and more deductions subject to the calculation. They don't want to raise rates. That's too easy for people to understand. They want to limit or eliminate deductions to raise the taxable income base that your tax is calculated on.

Lies. Taxes are higher this year than last and higher than 2008 to the tune of 600 billion, and of course, the real problem is that we will eventually have to pay, with taxes, for the spending that is far greater than ever before.
So really, we have a many trillion dollar tax increase, with interest, that we're just pushing off like some meth addict pushed his Diner's Club balance off.
Anyone telling you taxes are low, or that Obama hasn't raised taxes, is simply a liar. There's no way anyone really believes that crap. It's one thing to legitimately favor the spending level and taxation policy of Obama, but quite another to insult people who speak the truth by lying and lying to cover for your political party.
And let's not forget the democrats are proposing massive new taxes, such as VAT.
Once again, hdhouse shows what a fool he is in all things. The rate doesn't change.
The ability to take deductions to reduce your taxable income is what they constantly fiddle with to raise revenue. It really started with the tax reform act of 1986 where they started with the passive income bullshit. That showed the way to increasing revenue without increasing the rate. Just limit the deductibility of even such a "normal" deduction like a loss from a rental property.
Nothing infuriates a client more than learning that his legitimate deductions like mortgage interest or real estate taxes or even his personal exemption is eliminated because of his income level.
The next deduction they will destroy will be the “charitable deduction.” It’s coming to a tax return near you soon.
Oh, and taxes are too high already. We're taxed enough and too much, already. Have been for years.
Cut spending to 500 billion a year for the federal government, about 90% for defense, let states tax and spend however they want to handle everything else. No federal anything, basically.
You democrats who don't like the endgame for the current insane spending level had better demand you antifederalist democrats get things a little more realistic and in control.
Spending and entitlement liabilities are tens of trillions beyond sustainability now, before things get really out of hand. We're headed for a major debt and spending crisis, which will transform our system and our country, like any crisis does. If you want to preserve your big government, you should ask your leadership to stop running it off a cliff.
While I prefer a federalist system as opposed to this corrupt system, I do not want my people to suffer the amount I think they will.
The kid in the top picture -- the one looking exceedingly distressed -- has just gotten the news tht he will have to start working now and will never ever see the end of his tax obligation created especially for him and his children by Team Obama.
Reading about **x, **xing, and **xy people makes me SO HOT!
I love April 15th - something about the idea of a faceless bureaucrat sifting though - poring - over the the most intimate details of my life with a focus on the latest fiscal year...RAWR.
Hey mistah IRS man - my wife says she wants to file jointly - you game?
Actually Joe, taxes are what a civilized society has to pay for putting up with the likes of you.
And you are quite wrong. There was a tax reduction for about 95% of the people this year...guess you missed it in all the dust and hoopla of the teabaggers rushing around with their lawn chairs.
There wasn't a tax reduction you senile commie cunt.
They just reduced the withholding rate. The tax rate remained the same. So many people who used to get a refund owed money this year. And they are pissed.
But you wouldn't know that because you are a self-admitted tax evader.
I cannot believe liberals think they can get away with this "taxes are lower now" argument. Even if it were true, there's no question that they will go up enormously in the future. Do they think we cannot possibly comprehend anythig that will happen beyond this moment? And President Obama has the nerve to say we should be THANKING him.
It's like if my husband showed up with a new Dodge Viper (he's always wanted a Viper), and, when I said we couldn't afford it, he said, "Relax, I got 1000 for my old car, and we don't have to start paying on this one for a year. See, we came out ahead!"
don't let the facts get in anyone's way here. when the tax rate (lowest in years) runs over you with the truth you can always say you didn't see it coming.
Well the truth of the matter is that higher taxes are inevitable because you can't run trillion dollar deficits indefinitely. I guess the Tea Party folks are smarter than you cause they know the light at the end of the tunnel is a train while you think its Tinker Bell.
Damn, if people had gotten this worked up about Medicare, Part D, I'd have been happy.
Peter, I’m a conservative who opposed Part D. I saw it as an attempt by Bush to cozy up with liberals. They didn't buy it and he got what he deserved. Unfortunately, the rest of us are stuck with the bill.
Now what would make me happy is to find all those fiscally conservative liberals who disappeared on November 2008.
My experience with Turbo Tax (and forerunner MacInTax) is similar to Aridog's.
I wouldn't say it's impossible to make a mistake or for the program to be wrong, but using the program with any reasonable care won't cause you to underpay.
Clayton Craemer blogged about an unfortunate experience with TurboTax causing him an overpayment this year. Luckily he caught it before sending in the check.

I had the same thought I have every tax day: It would be so damned easy for the IRS to facilitate electronic personal income tax preparation.
Taxpayers would benefit, but Quicken and H&R Block would lose an income stream.
And which is more important?

I thought he just saw the Professor in her chicken suit.
when the tax rate (lowest in years)
"Taxed enough already" means "don't raise our taxes" or "we're taxed too much", not "we've never been taxed more than this".
While it may be impossible for a statist to comprehend the idea, it is actually quite possible to have your taxes cut and still be overtaxed. :)
