Meade buys food.

Some people thought the Meadhouse refrigeratorscape looked a little food-deprived. They were right. It was time for some food-gathering. Meade wanted all of you who were worried that we weren't eating enough to see what he brought home:

Front center.

There's filet mignon wrapped up there.

Kalamata olives?

Looks good to me. I would need a second mortgage to afford filet mignon from Whole Foods, however. Their 365 products are excellent value for money.

Is the scrapple hiding underneath the coffee?

Lincolntf বলেছেন...

Excellent!
But now that I see it I'm a little jealous.

নামহীন বলেছেন...

You'd think that Whole Foods would spell filet mignon correctly. Does it really say "fillet", or does it just look that way in the photo?

Unknown বলেছেন...

You mean Meade didn't grow all that?

I'm crushed.

Even people from Philadelphia don't like scrapple.

Meade has one of the best waistlines known to modern man. Would he care to share any of his secrets?

Is he "conservative" in terms of what he eats?

নামহীন বলেছেন...

Eggs over easy on a fried slice of scrapple is a great breakfast. (I am from Philadelphia, by the way.)

Squirrels are in the back yard. They're just not dead yet.

I grew up eating scrapple, and we all loved it.

(Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry on my father's side.)

No, no, no.

I saw only fourteen bottles of ale, one of wine and one of champagne. That's not even enough for a bachelor.

I thought you might go thirsty.

I was never worried. Not with all those restaurant photos.

Professor,
Are you having the problems commenting that we have? It is sort of illogical programming or something.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

"Meade has one of the best waistlines known to modern man. Would he care to share any of his secrets?"

I just asked him and he said: "When your pants get too tight, eat less, work more. And never deprive yourself of any food that you like... And by 'work more,' I don't mean sit in front of the computer."

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Meade just cut up a big bowl of strawberries, pineapple, and champagne mangoes. With that, we had chicken salad sandwiches. That was a fine lunch. Breakfast was coffee, oranges, and granola. Dinner? I hope it's the steak.

I second more dead animals. Also where's the veggies?

Good job of shopping, Sir Meade.I used to always buy Sea Salt, but then I read that getting "Iodized" sea salt is healthier, when available.

Where is all the alcohol? Or is that what the fruit is for?

I was kinda worried by the food to alcohol ratio in the friggie the other day.

When your pants get too tight, eat less, work more.

All these years I've been doing it wrong and buying bigger pants. Dang.

Another vote for Scrapple here. Grew up eating it in Philadelphia. How can anyone NOT like it? (Wish I could get it where I live now.)

Trooper, there are no Drakes cakes in Wisconsin. They'll have to settle for Hostess Ding Dongs and Ho Hos.

Trooper York বলেছেন...

Well I didn't ask that because we know that Meadhouse has a Ding-Dong and a Ho-Ho. Just sayn'

AA, Besides milk, and maybe peanut butter, what has been the greatest decline in purchases since your sons left home? I'm about to launch the last one (boy, after 2 girls) this summer, and am afraid a local dairy may go out of business as a result.

This leads into a thought I often have: why don't we eat the way our parents did?

In Madison, Copps sells Little Debbie snack cakes (according to the LD website), which I would put up against Hostess or anyone. Checking their weekly specials I see Copps has 8 O'Clock coffee on sale, along with Green Giant canned vegetables, Del Monte canned fruit, and Creamettes pasta.

Filet mignon is overrated. Great texture but no flavor, hence not worth the price. The fillet is only worth it when it's attached to the short loin, i.e. a porterhouse steak. Yum yum.

And fillet is perfectly correct when referring to this cut, though not when coupled with the word "mignon". I call them fillet steaks (pronounced "fill-it", which is a command to the meat regarding my stomach).

নামহীন বলেছেন...

I used to always buy Sea Salt, but then I read that getting "Iodized" sea salt is healthier, when available.

I thought sea salt contained iodine naturally but mined salt did not, which is why those mountain people who didn't eat seafood or get iodized mined salt used to get goiters or rickets or whatever you get from not enough iodine in the old days.

নামহীন বলেছেন...

Hostess, Drakes, Little Debbie -

None of them come close to another Philadelphia tradition - Tastykake.

Harsh Pencil -

I know there are places that put together care packages of local favorites for Philadelphias who have moved away.

mariner বলেছেন...

Class factotum,

I thought so too, but we wuz wrong.

From Wikipedia:

Because sea salt generally lacks high concentrations of iodine, an element essential for human health, it is not necessarily a healthful substitute for regular iodized table salt, which is usually supplemented with the element, unless another source of dietary iodine is available (such as dairy products or regular processed foods). Iodized forms of sea salt are now marketed to address this concern.

নামহীন বলেছেন...

Ah, Mariner. So if we start to see food snobs with goiters, we will know why.

Rockeye বলেছেন...

All these cries for more vegetables. Bah. Vegetables are what food eats.

psst: Tri-tip. The best roast around and makes darn good steaks.

On second thought, forget I mentioned it. There's only 2 per steer.

Palladian বলেছেন...

"Ah, Mariner. So if we start to see food snobs with goiters, we will know why."

There are plenty of other sources for the miniscule bit of iodine we require. Take a multivitamin. Eat some cheese.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

"Filet mignon is overrated. Great texture but no flavor..."

Even with morels?

Palladian বলেছেন...

6 ounces of cod. A couple of large potatos with skins. 16oz of milk. Seaweed. Or easiest of all, a Centrum.

Palladian বলেছেন...

""Filet mignon is overrated. Great texture but no flavor..."

Even with morels?"

Ah, now you're on the right track! Fillet is like popcorn: a wonderful textural element used to deliver the flavors of other things.

Fresh morels from the forest trip yesterday?

Palladian বলেছেন...

Ah, I didn't see the new morel-istic post.

Verification word: hismsg. His MSG, her General Tso's chicken.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

If you look at yesterday's refrigeratorscape, you'll see a big container of greens. We had a big salad tonight along with the steak and morels.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

@EDH Finally! Somebody noticed the Man Ray trays.

MadisonMan বলেছেন...

You need more dairy products. Yogurt. Cottage Cheese. Ice Cream. Cheese. This is the dairy state. Support your local farmer! (Although Whole Paycheck doesn't carry too many Wisconsin cheeses)

Last night we had spaghetti. Tonight is the Inventory Reduction Dinner, i.e., leftovers.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

@MadisonMan There are 2 kinds of milk and there's yogurt. Why no cheese? Meade bought the cheese at Steve's, where he got the Belgian beers. Steve's, btw, is the place in Madison where you can find St. B's.
