Magnolias are one of the most beautiful of the flowering trees, not just because of their pale pink blossoms next to the grayed bark, but because the slightest bit of wind or rain, and the blossoms paint another picture on the ground below.
Penny, I have three different kinds of Magnolia in my front and back garden. The big southern variety with the huge flowers is not doing so well because of the record snow we had in February.
1. The idea that the tea parties are in any way mainstream is in line with other MSM lies (example). A group that - in addition to their other hilarious posturing - pretends to be opposed to the MSM misleading is participating in an instance of it. That shouldn't be surprising: they aren't smart enough to be able to go after the MSM, and they aren't smart enough to understand what's going on. Now, not all partiers are libertarian/Randroid fringe loons or corrupt Beltway hacks: many are simply useful idiots for those groups, just as they were useful idiots for GWB. Those useful idiots are the people who - after Iraq, Katrina, and allowing 14% of MX's working age pop. to move to the U.S. - still thought GWB was a "good man".
I got to see the DC cherry blossoms last week. Beautiful. A gift from Japan, it seems, in 1912.
Then they bombed the shit out of Pearl Harbor not 30 years later. Then the two of us killed a bunch of each other's men, and then the Yankee Imperialists wiped two cities clean like they were schoolroom slate. Now we're friends again, a la Dylan's With God On Our Side.
Many SE asians were at the Smithsonian Art of Gaman exhibition, showing Arts and Crafts from the Japanese American Internment Camps. It was strange to be among them.
One man who wrote in the guestbook said his grandfather had made a simple bench on display.
I own the sketchbook paperback Citizen 13660 by Miné Okubo, with some autobiographical details and art, shown at the exhibit.
I thought of US soldiers, POWs of Japan, who were not so well treated, and German concentration camp victims, faring even more poorly.
Yes, all in all it was one helluva depressing art show. So I went out to see the pretty trees again.
The famous cherry trees in Washington were a gift of the Japanese government, however, they were taken from the Korean island of Cheju Do. Japan ruled Korea with an iron fist. For example, it was illegal to speak Korean in public.
Uh oh, sounds like John Edwards is in trouble again.

The Japanese treated the Koreans like the Germans treated the Eastern Europeans. God knows how many Korean slave laborers died alongside the Japanese military at places like Rabaul.
The "comfort girls" were also Korean slaves. In the last ten years or so, they or their families have begun to demand recompense from Japan. As Japan tries to ignore what they did in WWII, that these women are even being heard, let alone winning, is no small victory.
Maybe he is, but that link goes to an article about John Ensign. :)
Was intentional. heh
What Elizabeth will say at the property settlement.
In any case, Ensign is off the radar in comparison to Slobbering Barney, Choo Choo Charlie Rangel, Christopher "wrong side of history" Dodd, and the rest of the Demo all stars.

I'm probably going to start blogging again very soon. I'm growing tired of commenting on other blogs. I would rather just write about what I'm interested in, and not be too concerned about who reads it. And I'm going to have the comments turned off.

Oh no! Haiku Herman hacked your site.
I, for one, am looking forward to EU President Herman Van Rompuy's upcoming collection of Haiku.
In the meantime, I'll have to amuse myself with the HaikuHerman.eu website.
Is that in honor of the Masters Tournament starting Thursday? The beauty of spring is worth the wait.

I have a sudden urgen craving for jelly beans. Bet I could get a good deal on a bag of them today.
Ann, I will raise you a white magnolia from my garden (last season).
Or how about this?

Via The Fug Girls: check out these squirrels -- maybe it's just me, but I laughed.
One of the women at work had squirrels chew through the window AC unit and get into the Easter candy.
It was bad enough to find wrappers and half-eaten chocolate by the windowsill.
But when she went to bed and pulled back the covers, more wrappers and crumbs. Eeeeew. She couldn't sleep, she said.

2. Everyone's talking about Rove, but this Census Bureau PSA is like something the USSR would have produced. (In part it also has a vague MontyPythonesque feel).

Our magnolias down here are much larger and plainer I am afraid. That is a beautiful shrub.
Trey
If I see Steel Magnolias one more time, however, my head will explode.

The last all-in-a-row cherry trees that I saw were in Alice in Wonderland. They set off the stately white buildings in Snow Queen land.
Grown by the hand of Meade, no doubt.

Hah.
A trillion dollars.
It's incomprehensible.
They must think they're God.
I don't understand why a regularly contributing member of this community of commenters would deliberately misrepresent a link.
Maybe he didn't think he had any credibility to lose. But he did.

What? Irony broke out, and I wasn't informed until now?
