I spent years trying to figure out who "pimpconnection" was so I could avoid those neighbors.

That's some funny stuff. Wonder why they didnt throw some security on it to keep poor caitlin out? Mine is wide open, but you pretty much have to be in my yard to get enough of a signal. Still, maybe I need to come up with a good name for it. I like all my neighbors though.
There's a WiFi network somewhere near here that's called "I wear a tinfoil hat"
Our wi-fi is "MsRakkityCoonsChimneyNet" after the raccoon who had her kits in our chimney a couple of years ago.
My network used to be open but it kept locking up. I thought maybe someone else was using up all my bandwidth. I put a password on it and sure enough, the problem stopped.
I understand now that newer computers and versions of Windows can tell you what other computers are connected to your network.
There's an open network named "stupidstuff" down the road.
There was one in my building called "AL QAEDA" for a while so I named one of mine "CIA" and another one "NSA". The "AL QAEDA" network then turned into "NOT AL QAEDA".
There's a network near me that's called "we can hear you having sex" and another named "josh loves hj's."
I called my base station "al Qaeda" for a while. ("al Qaeda" literally means "the base". The joke is admittedly in questionable taste.)
I never saw the CIA or NSA, though, so I'm not in Palladian's building.
My favorite of these is "WeCanHearYouHavingSex" (in an apartment building with apparently very thin walls).
While waiting for airports, I used to enjoy starting an ad hoc network (that's the mode where several computers talk, but with no base station) and calling it FreeAirportWireless.
It was fun to watch connections being made, and then looking around to try to figure out who might be making them.
I know, very juvenile!
Okay, here's a basic question. If I want to use my laptop wireless only when I travel and there's free connections, do I just turn on the switch and go? I don't have to config it or anything?
I tried that at home and nothing happened.
I used to live in an apartment building right next to my graduate department. Over the year it became a love-hate relationship, so I could not resist naming my network 'PoliSciSux'. I still wonder to this day if any of the faculty saw that when logging onto the University wireless network.
