I am telling you that Meade is getting ready by rigging the sails and pouring the grog...

God that awful!

Waiter, Grog - and lots of it, and some earplugs.

Do lady pirates cry and talk about embarrassments to women?

"Eventually, she was so upset that she began crying. Of course, at that point the possibility of civil intellectual discourse completely evaporated.

I was also astonished by the poise with which my tablemates handled Althouse. Our companions did not raise their voices nor dismiss her (as I would have), but tried to calm her down. In fact, Althouse made the situation even more personal by yelling repeatedly at one of my dinner companions (who is also a colleague) that she was an "intellectual lightweight" and an "embarrassment to women everywhere." In fact, in my opinion, with that statement Althouse had actually identified herself. Before Althouse stalked away, I asked her to apologize for that insult, but she refused."

That what the web needs: more Kurt Weill.

I don't see any really good musical renditions of it on YouTube. I remember my father had a good LP of Dreigroschedoper.

YouTube is mostly angry and not very musical women.

The ship with eight sails part can be very beautiful; but the rest needn't be hashed up.

This song has something to do with tenured Professors compared to all the rest of Madison's residents when Lake Mendota is re-visited by the BB-64.

@ 1jpb Here's my devastating answer to that.

Thank God Dylan never sang about pirates.

Meade বলেছেন...

See the cross-eyed pirates sitting
Perched in the sun
Shooting tin cans
With a sawed-off shotgun
And the neighbors they clap
And they cheer with each blast
Farewell Angelina
The sky's changing color
And I must leave fast.

Like Lenya, her pirate forebear, Althouse
is a cruel and merciless foe!

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

They asked me my name
And I said, "Captain Kidd"
They believed me but
They wanted to know
What exactly that I did
I said for the Pope of Eruke
I was employed
They let me go right away
They were very paranoid

Yup, that was pretty devastating--it certainly was a thorough rebuttal.

Anyway, I'd already listened to the relative bhtv w/ you and Goldberg, so I knew that your being in this libertarian/con group motivated you to spread your political pushing and prodding beyond the lib types (like those you indicated were sort-of surrounding you in Madison.)

And, of course, there was the rising blogs issue.

Not an entirely different situation than the recent Palin book stuff. [Althouse even cried in both situations. Of course the Palin related tears were out of some sort of joy/amazement that Palin had been selected for the VP slot.]

BTW, I didn't think Palin's book excerpts were that dumb, especially when compared to the comment regarding Putin's rearing head. And, the fact that she earnestly apes right wing radio, without giving any hint that she understands these folks are entertainers w/o any need to actually govern, is quite dumb.

Someone needs another broadside from BB-64 ( my new pet name for the Professor)to shake up these sophists of blogamania always pretending they are snarky about minds that they cannot catch up with.

I seem to recall that Judy Collins did a wonderful and excellent rendition of Pirate Jenny. I'm sure I have it on a vinyl album somewhere in my pile of obsolete records.

/Sigh. Should really get it on a remasterd CD I suppose. I just did for Cold Blood. Why not Judy Collins?

Here is a really good rendition from Anne Kerry Ford. Not as good as Collins vocally however.

Sorry everybody, but Nina Simone owns this song.

Dust Bunny Queen বলেছেন...

Awesome!! I didn't know that Nina Simone did this song. Love love love Nina...

Still like Judy's version better.

I've been listening to Three Penny Opera on YouTube since my last posting.

Thanks.

In the mid-60's, at the small college I attended, Lenya made an appearance at the invitation of a professor of German who knew her.

In a small auditorium in the library, that held perhaps 100 people, she enthralled us for about an hour and a half. Accompanied only by a piano, in a voice that was well beyond its prime, she sang in both English and German with great passion and told anecdotes about her life with Weill with warmth and humor.

For most of us the songs were new. In truth some were attracted to the event in large part because she had recently been a lead villain in the Bond movie, To Russia With Love. Whatever our reasons for attending, many, including me, knew that we had been at an event we would never forget.
