He's urban, he's gay, he at least knows the smell("that doesn't smell like a cigar") and if that guy (a grower no less) had it, he would have offered it to Frank.
Seems to me that we're getting three tiers of justice in the US, one for Democrat politicians that lets them off the hook for just about everything, one for Republicans that insists they must be guilty of something, otherwise they wouldn't be Republicans, and a third for what Democrats call "the little people," who get crushed.
Come on. This isn't even debatable. Barney Frank doesn't know what a pot plant looks like? I've never been so sure a politician was lying. If any of his shit-for-brains defenders claim otherwise, they are just stone cold idiots. Why he bothered to lie about such a stupid thing is beyond me. It's not like a pot bust is gonna cost him anything politically. I guess when you've spent your career lying and manipulating people, it just comes naturally.
Good questions. I don't think Althouse generally posts things to upset us; maybe she shares things that upset her, but that's different.
I think Frank was forced for political reasons to say something stupid and it's in everyone's interest, when a politician does something like this, to repeat it as many times as possible.
What are the implications of Barney's statement, if true? He'd be so out of touch that he couldn't identify a marijuana growing operation right under his nose. And this man is making decisions which effect all of us!
Betcha he knows what amyl nitrate ("poppers") looks like, though.
And Jason, remember, this is the guy who was completely clueless about a male prostitution ring being run from his own home by his boyfriend. This is the guy who was completely clueless about Fannie and Freddie being insolvent. It's not inconceivable at all that such a dunce could be clueless about what marijuana or bongs look like. Either that, or he's the biggest liar since Joe Isuzu.
But Barney Frank did think it odd--now that you mention it--that the homeowners kept oregano in the living room, the family room, the home office, and the bedrooms.

reminds me of the day that we replaced the dish washer. a 30 y/o black plumber was under the sink connecting hoses and he moved a bunch of stuff and came across several quart baggies filled with green leafie stuff.
He had this surprised look on his face. I'd have thought, at thirty, he would recognize MJ, cause this stuff was catnip :)
The article says the perp is well known for his relationship with Frank, but doesn't say what the relationship is. Is this the lover who worked at one of the FMs?
This is the guy who was completely clueless about Fannie and Freddie being insolvent. Or that was his plan all along. Nationalize the mortgage industry!
For someone called "one of the smartest men in Congress" (as per Leslie Stahl with no attribution), he sure doesn't know WTF is going on around him at any given time, does he? His boyfriend pimps male whores out of his condo and he has no idea?
Whatever. This is a farce. I don't give two figs about some guy getting busted with weed but I do care that this was covered up in the DPRM. I also care that we can both hear that Frank is so effing brilliant AND that he has no clue about what's going down 12 ft from him. Pick one and go with it.
Barney Frank has one of the most pro-marijuana voting records in Congress; it is the best thing about him, really. He has displayed extensive knowledge of the drug and its medical uses. He has sponsored laws in support of medical marijuana and decriminalization of simple possession. He also spent a lot of time on college campuses in the 60s and 70s.
The idea that he doesn't know what pot looks like is just silly.
I take it Rep Franks probably thaought that the ganja dealers outside of Kingston's airport were selling folk art. And I'll bet Cypress Hill is not on his iPod.
Jason's right. I'm a Mormon from rural Utah, and even I know what marijuana looks like, although I probably wouldn't recognize a tobacco plant or a coffee bush. (Does it grow on bushes?) If he's this ignorant he shouldn't be allowed to handle pointed scissors let alone be a member of Congress.
I've always assumed that smoking dope was what makes him talk like that.
Why in our political world is it better to make such a bald faced lie, which if believed makes you a man who has been frozen in ice for 50 years.
Why is it so much worse to say: "I knew he was growing pot, but I can't turn in my lover for doing something that is legal in some states, pretty common anyway and harmless.
This week I was watching local Los Angeles TV and saw numerous commercials for pot. Hot chicks selling: "All 1/8ths for $50. Buy two and get one free gram. We have the best top-shelf marijuana in the state." etc. A brave new world.

Bullshit.

Have we identified Queen Mary Jane Milky Loads's connection?

Don't know how much longer this can last.
Is this post supposed to upset us?
I don't get it.
Why post this in this manner?
Feels fakey.

No, we're supposed to laugh.
I did.
Barney Frank: what a maroon. (I'm sensing a theme developing in my comments today.)
@Clyde, that would mean that Democrats lie??? But Democrats never lie -- don't you read the NYT?
Understatement of the year.
Sources tell FOX25 that when Frank was questioned he told police that he did not live in the house and that he only smoked cigars.
wv-"reckases"= seriously, you can't make this stuff up
wv-"deemen"= the reason you put a dondum on your cigar
But Barney Frank did think it odd--now that you mention it--that the homeowners kept oregano in the living room, the family room, the home office, and the bedrooms.
barney frank is a plant - malicious kudzu.
Plus "bongs" were found in the house.
Now, this would mark the second time police have caught Barney with either a hooker or a hookah in the house.
Plus, there's no "front porch" on the house they show in the FOX25 report.
@ EDH -
Glass dongs he knows; glass bongs he doesn't!
WV: nuton. Really.

He knows what a pot plant looks like all right-- he just doesn't remember.
It would have really surprised me if he told the truth.
This was in Ogunquit Maine-totally fab.
Doris Day has a house there.
Fab restaurants and there is an actual gay bar there called The Front Porch-coincidence? I don't think so.
I summer there.
The rare clumbers and I generally stay at the Yellow Monkey or Meadowmere-cost of room in season-$250.00/night, plus $50.00 for each rare clumber.
Thank you.
It's very expensive too, natch.
Only 1 hour from Boston, tons of mos go there. And frenchies from Montreal.

I'd guess that Barney Frank recognizes dickweed when he sees it.

No, that was Herb Moses. Seriously.
Oh, the puns keep coming!
Althouse is just pointing out the utter hypocrisy of it all. I mean Dems are all for sex, drugs and rock n roll right?

This has uncovered a larger scandal. If he can't identify the smell...
Barney Frank has never attended college even though he claims to have done so!

He would, however, recognize most fruits.
