"You light up my life/You give me hope/To carry on/You light up my days/And fill my nights with song."

So wrote the man The Daily News calls "songwriting sleaze."

Joseph Brooks needed to ask David Letterman advice on how to approach aspiring women.

More than one lottery.

She lit up his life bigtime. When do the old fools get some sympathy for being the targets of the seduction for profit by the ladies 30+ years younger than them?

Isn't that song supposed to be about Jesus?

I hated that song in High School.

I still do.

That is one repulsive-looking human being.

That guy is a zombie. Zombies aren't responsible for their actions.

John's on to something. I believe the original lyrics were:

Brains
Light up my life
Brains give me hope
To carry on

Brains light up my day
And fill my life with BRAAAAAINNNSS

I think they are accusing him of being sleazy for trying to take advantage of young women...

not for writing "You Light Up My Life."

Because the correct word for that would be "schlocky".

He's skinny, in his 70's, and just had a stroke, which might explain his facial expression, inability to get his coat on straight, and to brush his own hair.

I still remember waiting with bated breath and whispering humbleness to hear Casey Kasem announce the most popular song of the 1970s. I can't remember if I was surprised or not when he said You Light Up My Life, but I did start to draw a clearer distinction between what was popular and what I liked.

With stories like this its better to just look away. Think of the good guys in show business. The songwriters that replace sleaze with schlock. Let's give it up for Barry Manilow.

I love Wikipedia pages that lead off with the warning: "This article may need to be rewritten entirely to comply with Wikipedia's quality standards." With Manilow that seems appropriate.

His crimes and fatuities are probably due to altered mental status. He deserves a break but won't get one because he looks sleazy and writes schlocky.

Fortunately Ann cut off the lyrics before "It can't be wrong/When it feels so right.." Because, ya know, it was.
