Regarding Taitz, perhaps Althouse would care to discuss the fact that the judge applied a different standard to her than to Obama.

The judge pointed out that Taitz had not authenticated the "Kenyan birth cert", but he accepted as fact a picture of a cert from Obama's site despite the fact that that picture has never been authenticated by any gov't agency. In other words, he gave BHO the benefit of the doubt where he didn't give it to Taitz. Note that that doesn't involve "burden of proof", it involves using different rules for evidence from different parties.

I know that Althouse is smart enough to be able to discuss that discrete aspect of this issue without discussing the other aspects, but expect BHO fans to not be smart enough to distinguish between the part and the whole.

So does anyone actually believe that it was just a horrible coincidence that Obama dumped the missile shield on the 70th anniversary of the invasion of Poland?

Sure, I believe that. We're talking about a guy who thought the U.S. Army liberated Auschwitz, so he clearly doesn't spend a lot of time thinking about WWII.

Why waste time learning about how a bunch of white people killed each other back in the olden days? Obama would rather ponder important stuff like Skip Gates getting hassled by the Cambridge cops and Kanye West acting like jackass at some awards ceremony.

It's all about priorities.

Unfuckingbelieveable.

Nancy Pelosi is warning that a "climate of violence" is spreading and that she's seen it before in SF in the 70's [when Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were murdered by ex-Supervisor Dan White].

Bullshit, I lived in Noe Valley at the time and there was thug violence against gays but SF was not in the grip of a climate of violence. In fact after Milk's election the City's mood was that of elation, an aura of hope that gay rights were inevitable and soon.

The killings were personal, the result of one unhinged man's rage.

"In 1998, the San Jose Mercury News and San Francisco magazine reported that Frank Falzon, a homicide detective with the San Francisco police, said that he met White in 1984. Falzon said that at that meeting, White confessed that not only was his killing of Moscone and Milk premeditated, but that he had actually planned to kill Silver and Brown as well. Falzon quoted White as having said, "I was on a mission. I wanted four of them. Carol Ruth Silver, she was the biggest snake ... and Willie Brown, he was masterminding the whole thing."

Falzon, who had been a friend of White's and who had taken White's initial statement at the time White turned himself in, said that he believed White's confession." -wikipedia

To equate the opposition to Obama's policies/agenda with murder is another bully tactic to silence opposition.

Vilifying ordinary Americans who want straight answers as un-American, angry mobs or racists didn't work, nor will this tactic; it only reveals their desperation.

Keep digging Nancy, you and Carter's ilk are causing far more harm to Obama's agenda than his critics ever could.

I was just about to say something snarky about the photo-

Oh look it's Obama's version of the missile defense shield.....

Actually more to your point it's worse than what you allude to I think-

It's amateur hour over there...

It reminds me of when during the debate for the $786 billion stimulus package the Obama Administration and Obama himself drew a line in the sand-

We need this to hold unemployment at 8%...

Why do that? There really wasn't a need to throw the dice and call a number was there?

That's usually a HUGE mistake in the negotiation process because almost always you are going to get your bluff called-yet Obama and his team of Econ Czars did exactly that.

I asked an old time Republican California campaigner about that and his take on it was even more chilling because he took into account the complacency of the media-

His take:Why not do what Obama did?

Who's going to call him on it?

Apply that same process to leader of the free world on the diplomatic stage and the chilling effect reaches sub zero.

Who's going to call him on it?

[Someone will but they'll call his bluff from the other side...]

If he had waited until tomorrow it would have been the 70th anniversary of the Polish flight to Romania, so that might have been worse. The day after would be the 50th anniversary of Khrushchev being banned from Disney, so that might have been better.

jayne_cobb said...

I almost hope it was done on purpose, because the possibility that they would be so stupid in regards to such an important matter just scares the hell out of me.

jayne_cobb said...

Although I suppose the fact that they couldn't actually write the word "reset" correctly on the big red button they gave the Russians earlier this year does suggest ambassadorial ignorance.

I'm thinking you are giving them too much credit...and you're right that's probably worse...

There's this saying in certain circles-

Why borrow trouble?

That's what they did here.

I'm not really that bothered by Obama ditching the missile shield. Why should we be protecting Europe? They can afford to protect themselves for one in their lives.

BJM said...

@jayne - I think it's the latter if this story is any indication:

"President Barack Obama, seeking to make a case for health-insurance regulation, told a poignant story to a joint session of Congress last week. An Illinois man getting chemotherapy was dropped from his insurance plan when his insurer discovered an unreported gallstone the patient hadn't known about.

"They delayed his treatment, and he died because of it," the president said in the nationally televised address.

In fact, the man, Otto S. Raddatz, didn't die because the insurance company rescinded his coverage once he became ill, an act known as recission. The efforts of his sister and the office of Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan got Mr. Raddatz's policy reinstated within three weeks of his April 2005 rescission and secured a life-extending stem-cell transplant for him. Mr. Raddatz died this year, nearly four years after the insurance showdown.

Obama aides say the president got the essence of the story correct."

Fake but accurate? It gets worse:

"Obama speech writers appear to have been informed by erroneous media reports, including an article on Slate.com that stated,
"The delay in treatment eliminated Raddatz's chances of recovery, and he died."

Its author, Timothy Noah, said Wednesday that he wasn't contacted by the White House and didn't realize Mr. Raddatz hadn't died because of the treatment delay."

The President gives a major speech addressing 1/6 of the economy and his staff uses slate.com as a source?

We are so screwed.

There's always a price to pay.

You can pay now or pay later.

Later always costs more.

In this game, it's a different order of magnitude-the numbers, and it's a long game. The end game always opens up more options kind of early to be taking some off the table unilaterally- some will almost always be taken for you.

A headless bear and an empty bag of potato chips; this is symbolic of something, but what?

The headless bear is obviously Russia. They were once powerful but now they are weak yet still feared. Maybe the shadow between the chips and the plate represents that fear. Note that it is closer to the chips than the plate.

The empty bag of chips is obviously President Obama. Chips are tasty and enticing (especially when you are hungry) but they are not satisfying in the long-run. But it is even worse than that since the bag is empty and so one does not even get the superficial pleasure of the salty snack.

Work it backwards-

When it came to nuclear proliferation how many things during the SDI argument did the Liberals turn out to be wrong about?

How would their reliance on the theory of MAD look right now in the present day situation?

Short hand their arguments went something like-

No other country could get the technology because they would lack the knowledge and/or funding.

We would be able to keep it "secret".

Besides the final guarantee would be that no country having the above capabilities would be insecure or elect someone that was irresponsible.

Their form of government wouldn't allow it, or no one of an extremist mentality could attain the position of power over such a country that could get the capabilities.

Therefore such a leader would always be susceptible to rationality, MAD or what have you.

What have you- now?

Pakistan, Iran,North Korea, and "x".

Willing to put an ante post bet down that suddenly the Dems get it all right-with that track record?

The form says no...

Deena told me today her fundraiser is getting out of hand. (a thing called 3rd Way, an organization that helps teens stay out of trouble)

I go, "Well, that a good thing, in'nit?" She shrugged. "I guess so. I'm just so tired. And I'm worried we're not going to have enough food."

I go, "No problemo."

Here are the sourdough loaves baked today for tiny sandwiches tomorrow, the dough having fermented the last three days. I haven't tasted them but I don't have to. The strong aroma of the sponge told me everything I needed to know. They will make hundreds of delicious little sandwiches assembled at the last hour, and that's just a part of the whole deal.

I love it when the people I assist freak out while I remain the very model of composure. They don't know how I do it.

Ok, explain to me why the United States needs to pay a price for Europe's defense, either now OR later.

In retrospect, we could even have sat out of the European theater of both previous world wars and probably come out ahead on the deal. Why do we have to police the world, especially when the world just ends up being ungrateful for it?
