"Eve Fairbanks is The New Republic's congressional correspondent. A graduate of Yale, she joined The New Republic in 2005. Her work has also appeared in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Details, and on NPR."
It's absolutely maddening that even on something as cut and dried as the unconstitutionality of DC having representation in the House, a liberal not only can't concede the point but has to present herself as in opposition based on the higher principle of fairness.
The Fairbankian experience is eyeopening. She has control over the discussion by verbal timing and by a smiling innocense she uses to hide her true motives. She gives a parody of an analyst but really she sells a semantic Dominatrix experience to whoever needs to go buy one. Her skill is in the demeaning of another's self image. Thanks for a tour thru the darkside of Fairbankian spin skills, Professor.I was alert to her trashing of traditionall Americans as "primarily uneducated white males in a demographic death spiral". Who can stand up to this Style of slandering of all traditional values as "defeated silliness". Maybe Palin can push thru the storm of Fairbankian trashing. We need to quit agreeing to listen to it and repeat it as if it is only innocent youthful opinions. Think Tokyo Rose!
She went to Yale. She's entitled. She's also flirty and seductive, even in a discussion with another woman. (Maybe she's gay--I don't know or care.) But she's yet another product of elite education who seems to have a miniscule sense of doubt or uncertainty. Can anyone who went to Yale say "I don't know?"
One of these days all of these cocksure semi adolescents will have their heads handed to them by life. Some will acquire wisdom thereby. Others will look for someone to blame.
"primarily uneducated white males in a demographic death spiral"
Unfortunately Eve is right about the need of Rush and the republicans to branch out.. to appeal to academia, so as to make a better counter to democrats... It could be difficult give the Christian right alignments but I think it must be done.
Fairbanks seems to suffer from a lack of epistemological modesty. I beseech you, Miss Fairbanks, in the bowels of Christ, think it possible you may be mistaken.
You won on points, Professor. The clash of your skills at categorical analysis with her skills at seemingly not caring about anything she was not in spin control over, won the day with educated thinkers. She still did her strongest act in portraying your even handedness as only "to little to late to save the doomed warriors of the party of ineptness". You overcame her on realness points. Thanks for taking her on, Professor.
Unfortunately Eve is right about the need of Rush and the republicans to branch out.. to appeal to academia, so as to make a better counter to democrats... It could be difficult give the Christian right alignments but I think it must be done.
Spot on.
Where is the Christian right going to go?
Hopefully, they will go away. What the GOP needs to realize is that these people can be marginalized without much risk: they will, by and large, vote Republican no matter what. So why pander to them?
Lem... Your comment was in agreement with Fairbanks by repeating the belief that all assertion of traditional values has become a non-winning position. You base that on a linkage that since all of those Christian-right voters also express them, implying that like oil and water don't mix, traditional values are so tainted with a Christian heritage that college educated people must run away from them or be seen as inferior: THAT'S the enemy destruction meme that has been accepted into our camp like a Trojan Horse. So, I say beware of cool metrosexuals bearing gifts.
Ann is definitely a bottom. I think she projects her own desires when saying that no woman would want a submissive man. This is obviously true statistically but it doesn't seem convincing (without some backup stats) that there would exist a large group of men who would derive sexual pleasure from being submissive and no women who would derive sexual pleasure from satisfying those desires.
Balls/testicles are the meme of all memes. The word "meme" means a reproducible cultural symbol/thought that spawns copying until it is in permanent use, or it has been replaced or misused until another symbol/thought destroys the generative power of that meme's first use. Anyway, The War of the Memes goes on for the minds and hearts of men. The teacher is the front line soldier in this war. The Books of the scriptures are traditional Meme generators along with Shakespere and pre- 1967 Hollywood Movies. Guard your minds from alien memes.
You base that on a linkage that since all of those Christian-right voters also express them, implying that like oil and water don't mix, traditional values are so tainted with a Christian heritage that college educated people must run away from them or be seen as inferior:
No, I don't think traditional values are "tainted" or anything of the kind. What I do see is a vacuum of leadership in our camp, an ideas vacuum.
When Newt won in 94 we had more Ideas and proposals than we knew what to do with.
I don't hear any new ideas today. Supposedly this Jindal guy is an idea guy.. I didn't hear one new idea during his speech the other night.
Hmmmm, I'm going to steal that scarf plus the striped shirt look - I have a whole bunch of new scarves and I have to figure out how to wear them, so I found this bloggingheads quite useful, thanks.
Eve Fairbanks: "It's just a speech." Why, yes, it is just a speech. A smart, wonky conservative guy gives a bad speech after a set up of very high expectations. Oops.
Maybe it's a good thing this happened. One poor speech, a learning curve, and a 37 year old! Hey, if the 37 year old is smart, this particular outing will be a net benefit. Hey, as someone who was a screw up in the first two years of college and then ended up going to med school, I feel I have channel that vibe and run with it, okay?
Althouse: ...this assertion that there's an [economic] emergency...
Is there really a debate we have an economic emergency? Only on the fringe.
Remember, Ann, you're in your own bubble: a tenured professor living in Madison, which tends to be more insulated from economic swings by virtue of the university and state government.
It's always an "emergency" when a corrupt administration wants to do something illegal. With Bush it was the terrorist "emergency". With Obama its the economic "emergency". Both lies to cover up unprecedented curtailment of our precious liberties and to funnel taxpayer money to cronies. Isn't that right, Alpha? I know you agree with the first part. Doesn't it follow you should agree with the second?
Alpha.. Obama is postponing the inevitable (taking the toxic assets off the banks ledgers and disposing of them via a trust like we did with the savings and loans) so as to give impression of a crisis... Because when there is a crisis action is expected.. Action w/o discussions w/o debate.. Action to fundamentally change the nature of the US economy.
Things are not bad enough yet for Obama to go socialist.
AllenS said..."Fairbanks and people who think like her are now running this government. The stock market also realizes this fact."
Right.
And does that include the markets in Great Britain, Japan, China, Ireland, etc.??
This is a worldwide economic crisis, and regardless of what some here think...it is most certainly and "emergency" situation that is being dealt with by the Obama administration.
To be bitching about his or any administration's performance after about 40 days is absolutely ridiculous.
Can bloggingheads please go the way of podcasts? It's boring and stupid to spend an hour watching two (literally) talking heads saying something that could be read in five minutes. There's a reason this format disappeared from TV.
They've titled this one "Ann Plays the Race Card."
We are not in an "Emergency" - we're in the midst of a recession.
A normal part of the business cycle. We need to stop panicking and start thinking long term. The problem with the economy is too much debt and not enough savings. Borrowing a Trillion to "stimulate" the economy is doomed to fail.
But don't peg me as a "conservative". I'd rather bailout autoworkers than Bernie Madoff investors. I think TARP will go down in history as a complete disaster. The DOJ will have lots of work if someone ever looks into where a lot of the TARP money is going.
Bizarreness from Rocketeer67: ...in the bowels of Christ,...
WTF?
AL,
I referenced Cromwell right there in the damned comment. You are historically illiterate; I've known it for a long time. I'm not obligated to educate you, especially when your illiteracy is so amusing to me.
a) The stock market is not a bellweather for the greater economy. It goes up and down for it's own reasons which may or may not be related to greater economic health.
Yeah, it can freak people out. But it's like driving your car based not on the dashboard and surrounding traffic, but on the nationwide VMT of a given day.
b) Obama and his Treasury Secretary oppose "nationalization" of the (big) banks. It's common practice now for small banks. He's being (rightfully) criticized for this.
c) Lem: What do you think Nationalize the Banks means?
"Nationalize the Banks" means to conduct an orderly bankruptcy proceeding where they are taken into receivership, their bad assets and good assets separated, and the bank finally returned to private ownership. Here it is explained by one of nation's top economists.
Did Ms. Fairbanks admit she committed voter fraud in the 2006 Virginia senatorial election?
to the extent I listened to this, I wondered the same.
But I agree with someone else here that "talking heads" is an obnoxious format. ---------------------
And, I should clarify in my point to Lem that the daily and weekly stock market changes should not drive policy. As in "Oh the stock market is off 3% today. Let's change everything."
As regards the accumulation of wealth over time, its relevant and interesting.
For example, the DJIA closing less when Bush (who?) left office than when he started. That's an interesting fact and should reflect on Bush's policies and whether or not we keep doing the same damn thing. .
That sort of insult conveys a revulsion of male homosexual contact, which is a strange message for a so-called "progressive" to be sending out. It also seems to suggest that for those wielding such insults, political discourse is simply a sublimated sexual dominance game.
Does anyone want to participate in sexual dominance games with AlphaLiberal or Michael?
Michael is definitely a big "no". AlphaLiberal, it depends. If AlphaLiberal is a boy and under 35 or so, he might actually be a desirable sexual beast. Sometimes raving lefty guys are hung and can fuck like wild animals, provided you can get them to shut up long enough to get it up. I suggest putting something in their mouths. Teabag the lefty boys!
Well I love how some Liberals on this thread are now seeing it as a global crisis-
You mean Bush didn't do it all by himself? Shocker.
Now here is the sad thing-it's very possible that the Democrats aren't too interested or motivated in improving the economy.
When you have the economy shrinking and they propagandize that the answer is government, then government grows exponentially and power is all the more centralized.
Add to that that the Democrat voter base is guilty rich liberals that can afford taxes and many that don't pay taxes and you begin to see the picture-Democrats aren't overly motivated to see the economy do well.
The more people on the dole, the more people dependent on them the more power they acquire.
I think even the Blackberried Obama Bots have to be shocked at the efficiency in the information age where the stock programs sell, factories stop ordering supplies, and companies project going forward and -
Lem, If you actually think nationalizing any business in America means Obama is "taking over the economy" you've even dumber than I thought...and that takes some doing.
Here's what Nouriel Roubini, the man who predicted exazctly what's happening today...three years ago...has to say about "nationalization:
"There's another reason why the concept should appeal to (fiscal) conservatives, he explains. "The idea that government will fork out trillions of dollars to try to rescue financial institutions, and throw more money after bad dollars, is not appealing because then the fiscal cost is much larger.
So rather than being seen as something Bolshevik, nationalization is seen as pragmatic. Paradoxically, the proposal is more market-friendly than the alternative of zombie banks.
In any case, Republicans must now temper their reactions, the kind of government interference in the economy that we saw in the last year of Bush was unprecedented. The central bank -- supposed to be the lender of the last resort -- became the lender of first and only resort! With our recapitalizing of financial institutions, and massive government intervention in the markets, we've already crossed a significant bridge.
Yet another reason why bank nationalization is a good idea, is that we started with banks that were too big to fail, but what has happened, in the process, is that these banks have become even-bigger-to-fail. J.P. Morgan took over Bear Stearns and WaMu. BofA took over Countrywide and then Merrill. Wells Fargo took over Wachovia. It doesn't work! You can't take two zombie banks, put them together, and make a strong bank. It's like having two drunks trying to keep each other standing.
So if you took over a big bank, and you split the assets in three or four pieces, maybe you create three or four regional or national banks, and they're stronger! Nationalization -- or 'temporary receivership,' if you like, if the N-word is a political liability -- is an occasion to undo the sort of consolidation that has created an even bigger systemic problem. And the only way to do it is by essentially taking them over and breaking them up."
*I didn't hear all this whining when the government bailed out Chrysler with loans.
Why do people assume that fat people eat things like Big Macs and Dortios? Sure, a lot of fat people probably do, but does my personality suggest that I would eat such things? I haven't eaten a Big Mac in years. I don't have hamburgers very often, and when I do I get them at Peter Luger's or something, not fucking McDonalds! It's like people saying that Althouse drinks "boxes of wine". Get with it! Just because you can't afford any better food than McDonald's doesn't make it safe to assume that the rest of us can't either.
Now excuse me, I have to get back to my Balthazar baguette and Mont De Cats cheese.
Would have been nice to hear someone say "gee, wouldn't it be nice if people in DC had full citizenship status?
Why would that be nice? It is illegal. Change the Constitution if that is what you want to have happen. Until then, it is Un-Constitutional.
Just because you 'want' something to be, doesn't make it legal. There was a reason that the founders chose not to have the seat of government have a voice in Congress.
The Obamabots have no problem in bending and shredding the Constitution of the United States when it suits their own desires for power and no consideration for upholding the laws of this land. They are traitors and enemies.
Until there is complete capitulation, the market will continue to drop.
Many in the market consider capitulation to be the level at which prices "bottom out," creating a good time to buy stocks.
Basically, everybody who were selling stocks, have done so...leaving the market with only buyers...and hopefully, the renewed buying will drive prices up.
But...because this specific economy is so tied to banking and credit and real estate...it's all new to many.
I finally understand the teabag references in use today. I looked it up on an internet site featuring Gangsta Rap vocabulary. It means using testicles in a insultingly dominant way towards another. The internet to the rescue. You guys are all budding Shakespeares.
I knew what "tea bag" was and was sort of expecting someone to eventually bring it up. And I'm not surprised at all that it was AL who did it, claiming that conservatives are saying something that they aren't saying. Most people would call that a lie.
Michael... I understand that it's not on your the Gangsta Rap insult list, but we call showing respect to people who have earned respect "good manners". You may consider good maners to be a strategy that only works among educated adults, and is therefore beneath contempt in your Gangsta Rap circles where constant insults calling out your foes is the preferred startegy. To each his own comfort zone.
Until there is complete capitulation, the market will continue to drop.
Many in the market consider capitulation to be the level at which prices "bottom out," creating a good time to buy stocks.

Damn, Michael, you really don't know shit about markets, do you? All those expert sounding words, nary a thought within them.
Gallup: Obama Approval Rating Increases to 67% February 27, 2009
Pretty good ratings for a liar. People like to hear Obama speak but the fact is he lies just like Michael does. Michael said gas would be $5 a gallon by last December, wrong. Obama says we import more oil than ever before, wrong.
Approval ratings are what Michael masturbates to. Oh yeah, blow me, suck off, take some meds, blah, blah, blah....
That was a wonderful episode of Bloggingheads. I don't think Althouse was wimpy at all. But I would like to point out to her that there are many hetero couples whom are into S & M with their partners. It's not all done for pay. And a lot of it has become more mainstream.
"But I would like to point out to her that there are many hetero couples whom are into S & M with their partners."
My point was that I think a man who desires a submissive role will probably have a hard time finding a woman who is excited by him and thus there is a greater need for commerce.
AlphaLiberal said... "More interesting, the redder the state, the more likely they are to rank high in online porn. Now that's curious."
Alphie: Did you even bother reading the study?
This might be news to you but in every so-called Red state, blues live. And in every Blue state, you will find reds.
Curiously, it turns out the major consumers of online porn from the redder states are people who call themselves "liberal." Some may even call themselves "Alpha... liberal."

From TNR's bio page.
"Fairbanksing" is a slang term. Also here.
For someone so young, she surely has made her share of enemies.
It's absolutely maddening that even on something as cut and dried as the unconstitutionality of DC having representation in the House, a liberal not only can't concede the point but has to present herself as in opposition based on the higher principle of fairness.

Oh Great... just when I thought profe was defending Palin via Jindal.. she brings up Palin's seeming lack of intellect :(
In the movie Exotica (1994) a tormented father pretends that a stripper is his dead daughter.

Traditionalguy, are you saying I was too submissive?
Fairbanks and people who think like her are now running this government. The stock market also realizes this fact.
"primarily uneducated white males in a demographic death spiral"
Unfortunately Eve is right about the need of Rush and the republicans to branch out.. to appeal to academia, so as to make a better counter to democrats... It could be difficult give the Christian right alignments but I think it must be done.

Brooks and Cromwell spring to mind.

I don't know.
Althouse's defense of Rush was absolutely correct. Wimpy Republicans need to stop criticizing Rush - and get some new leaders.
Millions look to Rush because there is a leadership vacuum. The leaders aren't leading, they're too busy appeasing the MSM and the RINOs.

You *do* get the reason for having two Senators from each state, NY, California, North Dakota or Wyoming, don't you?
Please tell me you don't actually think this is unfair. Please?
And what was the original purpose of making the National Capitol in a not-state?
There was a reason for that.
Does that purpose no longer apply?

Yeah, does "Grow a pair" mean the same thing for a woman? Maybe...maybe something else!
At first I thought Bob invited you on BH.tv because he didn't know who you were, but that was a long time ago.
I still send him an email complaining every time, though ;-)
Ron, I think that the verbal image of a woman with balls means pretty much the same thing as when it's used to refer to men.
Sarah's pair reloads in just a few seconds ;)

That sort of insult conveys a revulsion of male homosexual contact, which is a strange message for a so-called "progressive" to be sending out. It also seems to suggest that for those wielding such insults, political discourse is simply a sublimated sexual dominance game.
Which we already suspected.
GE's chairman bought 50,000 shares of GE stock today.
His is the world's 10th largest company, founded by Thomas Alva Edison and one of the original 1896 Dow Industrial companies.
The lights are going off there.
Goodbye, GE.
Why do lefties always default to men's-locker-room-level sexual insults?
Because they're too ignorant to craft anything subtler?
I mean, that's definitely what it is in AL's case - just look at the benightedness he constantly parades. In my experience it commonplace on the left.
Haha. But one click away and a link to another bunch of right wing teabaggers.
Paladian,
Why would anyone care what a fat, failing artist has to say about anything?
Get back to that Big Mac.
I think even the Blackberried Obama Bots have to be shocked at the efficiency in the information age where the stock programs sell, factories stop ordering supplies, and companies project going forward and -
Fire for the Future.
Palladian, you guys are holding rallies featuring giant teabags and cries to "teabag liberal Democrats.'
And that's my fault? Hell, man, that's a "target rich environment!"
If you follow the polling trend for Obama's popularity-
This weekend only 8% more strongly favored Obama than strongly disapproved-
Strongly Approve 38%
Strongly Disapprove 30%
[Rasmussen Reports]
On Sunday that improved a little by 2% in Obama's favor.
Funny how on weekends Obama seems to poll less favorably so far.
Could be that they are getting actual taxpayers to answer the phone on the weekend.
"Paladian,
Why would anyone care what a fat, failing artist has to say about anything?
Get back to that Big Mac."
Huh. Why would anyone care what a failed psychology teacher from Santa Monica College has to say about anything?
Get back to that midterm, Mr Olson!
Lem,
If you actually think nationalizing any business in America means Obama is "taking over the economy" you've even dumber than I thought...and that takes some doing.
Palladian:
Teachers teach...fat people EAT.
"Teachers teach...fat people EAT."
I'm a teacher too, honey. Tee hee.

Palladian - Teaching people how to eat doesn't count.
And I've seen some of what you describe as "art"...and it isn't.
Palladian asks: "Why do people assume that fat people eat things like Big Macs and Dortios?"
And this yahoo says he's a teacher??
No, most fat people eat prescribe to low fat, high fiber and protein diets, with lots of exercise.
DUH.
"Palladian - Teaching people how to eat doesn't count."
With a wit like that, it's no wonder you teach at a community college.
"And I've seen some of what you describe as "art"...and it isn't."
Funny, people seem willing to give me an awful lot of money for it.
To be fair since it seems that we've moved on to unqualified criticism of each other's professional work, let's see some of your academic writing!
"No, most fat people eat prescribe to low fat, high fiber and protein diets, with lots of exercise.
DUH."
You might want to make sure your sentences actually make sense before you choose to end them with a sarcastic DUH.
Of course you have no shame, so it probably doesn't matter.
Dow closed at 6736. Down 299 and a fraction.
Isn't it marvelous, the speed with which Zero is destroying the nation he hates?
"Dow closed at 6736. Down 299 and a fraction."
Ugh, my predictions are coming true. Expect a dip into the 5000s by the spring.
ricpic - What have YOU ever done for America?
Little weasel.
Palladian - I'm not teaching at a community college, you moron.
And, as for typos...get real.

Gross. I'm leaving.

Right.
And does that include the markets in Great Britain, Japan, China, Ireland, etc.?"
When we sneeze, the world catches pneumonia.
traditionalguy - Based on your incessant and never ending sucking up to Ann...it makes me wonder if you even have a bag...tea or otherwise.
I knew what "tea bag" was and was sort of expecting someone to eventually bring it up. And I'm not surprised at all that it was AL who did it, claiming that conservatives are saying something that they aren't saying. Most people would call that a lie.
Synova, well, if anyone would know about lies, it would be a Republican like yourself.

Why are you doing a blogging heads with Justin Guarini?
Traditional Suck-Up - "...we call showing respect to people who have earned respect "good manners"."
Look, all you ever do is post love notes to Ann or anyone with whom you agree.
I don't find your comments insightful or even the least bit informative...so in your case, "earned respect" just doesn't fit.
*As for your "Gangsta Rap" silliness...I have absolutely no idea what it has to do with me.

Damn, Michael, you really don't know shit about markets, do you? All those expert sounding words, nary a thought within them.
Michael says,

Pretty good ratings for a liar. People like to hear Obama speak but the fact is he lies just like Michael does. Michael said gas would be $5 a gallon by last December, wrong. Obama says we import more oil than ever before, wrong.
Approval ratings are what Michael masturbates to. Oh yeah, blow me, suck off, take some meds, blah, blah, blah....
Imagine what November is going to look like....
That was a wonderful episode of Bloggingheads. I don't think Althouse was wimpy at all. But I would like to point out to her that there are many hetero couples whom are into S & M with their partners. It's not all done for pay. And a lot of it has become more mainstream.

Obama approved, liberal endorsed.
Where's your messiah now, eh?
Where does this S&M theme come from? (Wait, don't answer that).
fcai, nice snark, if I knew what you were talking about? WMD?
Yep, Obama has 'em. And progressives love them, even though they understand little of the real world, by their own admission.
"But I would like to point out to her that there are many hetero couples whom are into S & M with their partners."
My point was that I think a man who desires a submissive role will probably have a hard time finding a woman who is excited by him and thus there is a greater need for commerce.
Obama says we import more oil than ever before, wrong.
OK, I'll bite. Why is it wrong? Are you looking at total barrels or percent?
And, pre-emptively, we all know consumption decreases when the economy stalls, so making hay out of that is lame. Right?
Not to get into that conversation, but Ann's last comment there just makes sense.
More interesting, the redder the state, the more likely they are to rank high in online porn. Now that's curious.
-----------------
Oil imports chart. Looks like volume of imports is down, with economy. But percent?
Ricpic:
"Zero" I like that nickname for Obama. It may stick to him and be used to denote similar suckcessors.
Here you go Alpha.
The situation could not be more serious.
Wrong again or lies again?

Alphie: Did you even bother reading the study?
This might be news to you but in every so-called Red state, blues live. And in every Blue state, you will find reds.
Curiously, it turns out the major consumers of online porn from the redder states are people who call themselves "liberal." Some may even call themselves "Alpha... liberal."
Weird, huh? What do you think that means?
