Breakfast this morning here is fried pizza dough! You flatten them out by hand or with a roller like pancakes and then fry them up. Salt or sugar to taste. I prefer them salty.
For those of you with a like for cheese add your favorite and fold in half before frying. Mozzerella works best. Serve alone or with a side of scrambled eggs.
Hey, everyone! Buy the kettle! By using that link, you will be supporting this blog. Also, you will have a very nice kettle that will have the added advantage of reminding you of all the good times hanging out here in the comments.
The breakfast is as Jason describes it, plus potatoes. So it's essentially hash browns with the leftover steak from last night at the Bistro.
I had Cheerios with brown sugar and skim milk this morning. To get some fat in my diet, I'm at a coffee shop somewhere having a 2% milk chai, following a 2% Hot Chocolate.
And if you buy my recommended kettles you'll be supporting the Althouse blog (if I got the referrer code correct!) and you'll be able to think of me, Palladian, every time you boil water. And the sound of the whistling kettle will remind you of the irritatingly shrillness of my comments!
Palladian also recommends the Chemex coffee maker and filters as one of the best ways to brew and enjoy coffees. Palladian prefers the proportions and greater durability of the the Handblown Chemex coffee makers to the machine made ones available on Amazon, but since Palladian wants to help support the Althouse blog, Palladian suggests you buy one from Amazon instead of directly from Chemex.
"Sorry, the Revere whistling teakettle is the only teakettle."
Revereware stinks. Poorly conductive thin stainless steel with a copper wash on the bottom that doesn't actually help the heat conductivity at all. But whatever boils your water I suppose.
"I also like the red orange green dumpy flat le creuset ones, are they any good, anyone?"
No. They're thin steel crap made in Thailand, nothing at all like the enameled cast iron cookware that Le Creuset is famous for. Le Creuset has harmed their brand through the time-honored method of over-branding and licensing, lack of focus and the poor quality of their "extended" range of products. Their iron cookware is still very good however.

Althouse's kitchen, what we can see of it, looks quite cozy and functional.
We have a 15 yr old black Wolf range and some visitors shrink in horror that it's not stainless, they're not asked back.
I loathe designer cookie cutter kitchens and especially granite, we have Silestone with a huge stainless work table in the center as an island. Our kitchen is very hodge-podge by trendy standards but functions exceptionally well. We'll tart it up one day with kitchen de jour when we sell the house as the Wolf goes with us.
I made steel cut oatmeal with raisins and walnuts, topped with maple sugar and a small knob of unsalted butter. Comfort food.
We have a twenty-five year old Baby Gaggia w/grinder that we've dragged from country to country, re-wiring and nursing along, it makes great espresso and cappuccino.
Filter coffee is just not hot enough and I can taste the filters no matter what the maker promises.
Speculation? What must they do, send out official announcements via post? It's been announced here repeatedly. Hinted at almost continuously. And it's great! Glorious even. Brightens up the day.
Revereware stinks. Poorly conductive thin stainless steel with a copper wash on the bottom that doesn't actually help the heat conductivity at all.
I have a Revereware 2Qt double boiler that I use for sauces. It's over 20 yr old now, very solid, and holding up well. It's stamped "Korea" on the bottom. Maybe they thinned out more recently.

It may be that today's Made-in-China Revereware is crap. I still use a saucepan -- apparently made in USA -- that my mother received over fifty years ago. My teakettle waa made in Korea.
But despite its rather thin stainless steel/decorative copper bottom construction, it is ideal for boiling water for tea.
A tea kettle should boil enough water to make a pot of tea relatively quickly, without injuring the user. The Revereware kettle is not heavy, even when filled, so it does not put stress on the wrist. The curved handle allows the hand to comfortably hold the kettle as near the center of gravity as possible. Pouring into mugs or pots is also easy.
Most important, the hand cannot be burned by the handle, nor scalded by the steam coming from the spout.
Further, the whistle announces when the water has reached the ideal temperature, a few minutes after being put on a burner.
Importng design features from other products, such as thermal conductivity needed for saute pans, or heat retention needed by Dutch ovens, is unnecessary, and may even be harmful, as in a heavy cast iron teakettle.
The question is why would you cook breakfast unless it was for two.
Quite apart from Althouse's life, personal, shared mysterious or not, some people just like cooking (or find it economical). I lived alone for 7 years back in the day, and I cooked for myself all of the time, even at breakfast. (Overnight guests did get points for doing the honors, however.)
Come to think of it, since I'm the only meat-eater around here, I still cook for myself.
(And them.)
*** Palladian, how much would it cost to pay you to come here and organize my kitchen?
I have that kettle. Have had it for over ten years.
One issue: it has no whistle. Sometimes a user (like my significant other) will forget they turned it on, and will not remember until they hear a crackling sound coming from the kitchen. That signifies that the water has completely boiled away, and the kettle is now cooking. Setting a timer helps prevent that. As does holding onto a thought for more than 2 minutes.
But it is stylish. Although it will develop a black patina over the years (but maybe only if you "cook" it numerous times, like in my household.)
Como noche como suenos, son los ojos negros, de mi amor Manuela. Como espiga en primavera, como luna llena es mi amor Manuela. Sus palabras cariosas, la mirada inquieta, de mi amor Manuela. I'm as lucky as few.. as everyday awaits me the sweeteness of her insight and the love immense that only Althose can give.

Because I live, as you see, stray as a bird. Because next to me, in truth, no one plots my course because I have the hindsight of an old dog, I know how to keep our silence, I know we understand; you have to keep their mind on me.
Because you have to keep composure of a great lady. but I know you need adventure besides other things. We know what we like and we do as we please, and at the same time I am a discreet romantic; you have to keep yout mind on me.
Because only I, I can give you, all the love you need, I can see you a thousand times w/o no one knowing anything, because no one will call on me for explanations nor permisions.
Because only I, I can secure, all the love that you need; I know perfectly what you want if you call me; waht a pity if such a beautiful thing so should end..
And no matter how much we understand and everybody undertands the separation that we endured .. coming in legally.. he still says that maybe we should not have separeated.
that the separation hurt me. of course it did but how could i tell my father that. he has allways done waht he thought waht was best for us.
Sure I hung around here in the wings for some time before I commented. But is there any way I can be brought up to speed about Maxine? She was before my time, yet apparently "historical" for you at least.
Penny, you could be whomever, including yourself, and I take no stance. Regardless--and here's the the sum total point of this comment--if you really want to know, you could start here.
Why rely on others?
(Except to fill in blanks;--but that's the cart, after you've got the horse.)
Me, I'm put in mind of the following song (sorry, Jan & Dean version not available, much less my second choice, or at least not quickly enough): This one.
Which doesn't put ME in mind of Maxine as first choice for sock puppet, if indeed Penny is.
Whether Penny is or Penny is not, unfolding is inevitable, as it is for each and every Althouse commenter (character, sock puppet, just-himself-or-herself or whatever).
That's an Althousupational hazard. Goes (comes?) with the territory.
IMHO, anyway, FWIW & so it goes, LOL (to be clear).
"Palladian, how much would it cost to pay you to come here and organize my kitchen?"
Oh, I doubt you'd want me to do that. My 'organization' is very personal and is generally 'organized chaos', undecipherable and unknowable to anyone but me :)

Wheaties breakfast of champions.
Using a metal fork in a non-stick pan?
What on earth are you cooking? I'm unable to identify the food. What do pork brains look like?
4 Morningstar strips (one minute ten seconds); two poached eggs (30% power, five minutes); meal cleanup time 12 seconds.
Love your kettle...
Looks like bell peppers, onions, and steak.
I just had a piece of cake for breakfast.
It was leftover from my work where I commemorated 12 years on the same job with a nice big cake!
No previous employer ever put up with me for so long. Heh.
Love that coffee pot. Or is it a tea pot? In any case that handle is way kewl.
This was my breakfast. Incorporate flowers whenever you can.

This right after (sort of) a post about hot sex on non-flannel sheets.
I had Cheerios with brown sugar and skim milk this morning. To get some fat in my diet, I'm at a coffee shop somewhere having a 2% milk chai, following a 2% Hot Chocolate.
And I have flannel sheets.
Someone might want to do a carbon dating on those cook top units. They're a fire hazard!
Please, if you click to enlarge the photo, don't concentrate on how battered those burners are. But the do work just fine.
"Hey, everyone! Buy the kettle! By using that link, you will be supporting this blog."

We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock."
don't concentrate on how battered those burners are.
Luckily for Prof. A, Lillian Vernon is still in business, still providing decorative burner covers in the 21st Century:

If you go there, check out their banana slicer.
I recommend this kettle, or this version if you don't have a gas stove.
And if you buy my recommended kettles you'll be supporting the Althouse blog (if I got the referrer code correct!) and you'll be able to think of me, Palladian, every time you boil water. And the sound of the whistling kettle will remind you of the irritatingly shrillness of my comments!

From this review we learn that the kettle burns your hands off.
The theme for today's blog posts is "hands": a woman with one hand, burning your hands off, fishermen not holding hands.
Sorry, the Revere whistling teakettle is the only teakettle.
Oh, cool. I have been looking for a new tea kettle and I generally dislike the current modernish versions, but I like the one linked.
I also like the red orange green dumpy flat le creuset ones, are they any good, anyone?

Is it OK if I sit here at the counter, or do you want me in the breakfast nook?
Hey, who messed up the sports section?

And maybe if you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on kettles that you'll have to polish constantly you'd want this one.
I cook on the weekend.
Tonight, we're having "Breakfast for Dinner"
- Omelets (egg beaters)
(roasted peppers, onions, basil, cheese, shrooms, and some herbs)
- apple smoked bacon done in the oven
- home made hash browns w/ more onions and peppers
Lem: That wasn't just a man's hand...that was an unmarried man's hand. And, by the looks of the last vestiges of a faded wedding ring tan line, a recently divorced or widowed man's hand.
Althouse cooks for two...
Or is it really Althouse doing the cooking?
That was a man's hand petting that dog the other day.
You are goin to tell me Althouse drove ALONE cross country and ate onion rings?
Althouse has a boyfriend people... when are you going to wake up?
Good stuff, Palladian. Thanks!
Which is larger: your self-absorption or your self-delusion that you are not self-absorbed?
Lem: Nice job making me look psychic.
Lem: Nice job making me look psychic.
As long as you dont make me joing a "network" I'll be fine... wait, will I?
And then there's Titus sophomoric humor Althouse is so fond for..
I dont know if she had it b4, but if she did and still does then Althouse is trully one young at hart cookie.
The hardest part in all of this is trying to figure out who... This guy probably comes here and comments.
It was easier figuring out who was Sir Archy and the blogging roach.
This guy will be a tougf nut to crack, specially if he does not exist. Like Sir Archy
OMG.. This guy is a fisherman..
He likes to fish.
He fishes in the ice..
The question is why would you cook breakfast unless it was for two.
I mean, I live alone... I'm not going to impress myself by cooking breackfast?
You usually do that for somebody else.
Looking back, I had no idea how wonderfull it was when it was done for me.
As though by the Internet it were pre-ordained...
I need a new kettle too. My other one is broken. As of now, I use my single cup coffee maker to provide me with hot water on tap which is kind of cool.
Geez, Lem, don't talk about cracking a guy's tough nuts! Fingernails on the blackboard, dontchaknow!
The hardest part in all of this is trying to figure out who
You really haven't figured that out yet?
The meal could be hopel-poppel, a Midwest heartstopping favorite. It's man food, too, for those of you obsessed with Prof. A's romantic situation.
"The breakfast is as Jason describes it, plus potatoes. So it's essentially hash browns with the leftover steak from last night at the Bistro."
Well, I didn't read the prior comments very carefully, did I? But definitely Man Food.
Bear with me Ron.. I can do this.. not a morning person thou.

Or a unmarried Super Bowl champion who gave Althouse his Super Bowl ring?
Or someone who is about to do the dishes?
Or a superhero who wants to kick back just one day without the decoder/communicator ring?
Or Althouse's ex-husband, who is still so grief stricken by the loss that the wedding band leaves a ghostly trace?

kidding roachi.. kidding.. I just finished my SLAP program and I'm in a celebratory mood.

Did you know I had to pay to get in?
I mean, some people (like the ones in front of Judy) found it an insult that they had to pay to work.
I think it was fantastic I did not have to go to jail.

Lem are you drinking this early in the day?
Now I have two reasons..
I'm having leftovers for lunch. Over Mardi Gras, I made possibly the best gumbo I've ever turned out.
Woodcutter's Omelette:
1/2 Med. Onion diced
1/3 Green Pepper diced
1/2 cup of crumbled Cauliflower
--Microwaved and placed on top of:
two slices of bacon
five slices of Pepperjack cheese
(fm 8oz block)
1/3 cup of hot sauerkraut
--And topped with
1/3 cup shredded white NYS cheddar cheese
--Outer envelope:
Three large eggs and a teaspoon of buttermilk whipped up in my Magic Bullet
And black coffee.
The measurements are guesses; I throw these together.
After this, I don't need to eat again for the rest of the day.
Dud
Those curtains look pretty sheer.
Althouse may want something less sheer as it's beginning to sound like Lem may be on stake-out outside soon with a pair of high-powered binoculars.
BTW roachy.. Hormigas Bobas dont bite. they make a grate pet for you ;)
That's if you are not into trans-species sex ;)
Beth,
As soon as I go to the words "the next day" I knew it was going to be good!
I was afraid Althouse would not find time for us (her first love) and some jhonny come lately would steal her away ...
Absconding Althouse..
On my Mind... With Althouse ;)
But it seems my worst fears have not been realized.. yet.
I had an english muffin with peanut butter on it.
Hopefully the "it" is Titus's English Muffin, and "breakfast" does not involve the Rare Clumbers.
My theory is that Alhouse son Jac is TiTus.
I mean Jac could not be more different than TiTus... unless he was trying and fooling some of us.
Waht was that Doyle quote?
Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth
To be a good human being is to have a kind of openness to the world, an ability to trust uncertain things beyond your own control
Martha Nussbaum
More than Althouse, I dont know how much more trusting can a person get... that she will trust us with her son?
That's love.
"Hit me with you best shot"
Hedda Nussbaum
TiTus is Jac... I'm willing tobet on it.
Hedda Nussbaum..
Good lord.. talk about missplaced trust .. the killing of that child changed a lot things in NY.
btw.. I saw Hedda once at the Clear Water Festival.
She still looked like she did all those years ago..
My kitchen, taken a few minutes ago... 1, 2, 3. It's amazing what one can do with limited space.
ooh
that s my kind of kitchen
Jesus Palla.. you either have every fucking cooking tool in the patton office... or they come to you first to try the out.
Have you ever considered having Martha over?
or if not martha waht about this guy?
Hey.. this is just speculation.. I'm not into guys.. honest.
ooh
that s my kind of kitchen
So she can bring in all the causins form DR ;)
Lem : My theory is that Alhouse son Jac is TiTus.
My reasoning for Titus=Pallidian is this:
Palladian has very strong positive feelings towards Jewish people. Palladian studied classical art and we know he gets very deep in his research. There are several buildings of architectural importance from the Roman world built for or with the help of Emperor Titus (Palladio even drew a plan of the ruins of the Baths of Titus). Very good Jason.
But that could also mean Palla Titus and Jac are one and the same.. thereby making Jac's site poor in command since Jac would have to be in so many palaces/places at the same time.
Sorry Jason.. This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it ;)
I love that Palladian got dishware from a restaurant that closed. That's the best type of memorabilia.

BTW Jason.. I admire that you use.. waht I take to be your own face as your avatar.
I find that noble of you and every one else that dares do it.
not that there is anything wrong with not doing that... mind you.
Jason, I bet you're a good cook.
Palladian, what an amazing kitchen. I hope you're tall. And thin.
Pallaces... sand castles in the air... Jac
Titus... Help me out here Jason.

If anybody can figure out who TiTus is it would be Freeman.
(And them.)

Palladian, how much would it cost to pay you to come here and organize my kitchen?
You know Roachy.. i could introduce you around in exchange for information.. hush hush on the q t. free trips to DR ... nobody has to know.
they say all the important information gets desiminated via the kitchen .. who else is there .. you were there roachy..
speak.. speak
Help help Freeman..
I don't think I'm much help on that trail. I think that Titus is Titus. I don't think he's a character created by another commenter.

No kidding Palla.. you rule! In Althousia and beyond!
"Palladian, what an amazing kitchen. I hope you're tall. And thin."
Well, I'm tall....
I think that Titus is Titus. I don't think he's a character created by another commenter...
Might as well.. the powers that be need secrecy, thats how they role..
See waht I get for calling on management.. a thank you but no thank you letter ;)
I'm going to second what Freeman said-but then what do I know-
I thought Ann was doinkin' Doyle.
just jokin.
just jokin.
Oh.. you think you are funny?
How are you funny?
I have to call my mother.
thank God she dosent know about SLAP and a bunch of other things.
I'll be back in a bit.
Although it will develop a black patina over the years (but
maybe only if you "cook" it numerous times, like in my household.)
I'm here - watup Trooper?
I'ts amazing waht a phone call to DR can turn into..
First off a bunch of causins (female) want to talk to you so you .. you know do waht you can when you cant put a face on the other side of the line..
you ask how you doing over and over...
Talking on the phone I thought of this song..
Manuela
Slo vivo, slo pienso
If TiTus spoke spanish he would know where I was coming from, maybe.. ;)
Ave Maria... what would we do? what would we say if we were Betania?
Somos dichosos como nadie,
porque cada da nos espera,
la dulzura de sus besos,
y ese amor inmenso que nos da Althouse...
We are lucky as few..
as everyday awaits us
the sweeteness of her insight
and the love immense
that only Althose can give.
This is the way Theo would appreciate it (not off key) ;)
Sus palabras cariosas,
la mirada inquieta,
de mi amor Manuela.
Tiene mis sentidos presos,
y todos mis sueos son para Manuela.
Desde que lleg a mi vida,
desde aquella tarde que encontr a Manuela.
Her caresing words..
Her unquiet streaming looks
we love Atlhouse
She holds us in a sense prisoners,
Our dreams are to make it on Althouse, ever since that afternoon, ever since I got to know Althouse..
I'm as lucky as few..
as everyday awaits me
the sweeteness of her insight
and the love immense
that only Althose can give.
The thing about Althouse is that it might not be easy to love her..
Todo el amor que te hace falta.
Porque vivo, como ves, como las aves
siempre vagabundo.
Porque junto a mi, en verdad, no existe nadie
que me marque un rumbo,
porque tengo la avidéz de un perro viejo,
sé callar lo nuestro,
porque sé que en el amor nos entendemos;
tienes que seguir pensando sólo en mÃ.
Porque tienes que guardar la compostura
de una gran señora.
pero sé que necesitas de aventuras
más que de otras cosas.
Ya sabemos qué nos gusta y como somos
y nos complacemos,
y a la vez soy un romántico discreto;
tienes que seguir pensando sólo en mÃ.
Porque sólo yo,
te puedo regalar,
todo el amor que te hace falta,
te puedo ver mil veces
sin que nadie sepa nada,
porque nadie a mà me exije
explicaciones ni palabras.
Porque sólo yo,
te puedo procurar,
todo el amor que te hace falta;
yo sé perfectamente
lo que quieres si me llamas;
que pena si una cosa asà tan bella
terminara..

I have NO doubt that Ann knows how to cook. ;) But really? What is she doing out of bed at 8am?
Some one (or two?) may just be rushing things a bit.
Because I live, as you see, stray as a bird.
Because next to me, in truth, no one plots my course
because I have the hindsight of an old dog, I know how to keep our silence, I know we understand;
you have to keep their mind on me.
Because you have to keep composure
of a great lady.
but I know you need adventure
besides other things.
We know what we like and we do as we please,
and at the same time I am a discreet romantic;
you have to keep yout mind on me.
Because only I, I can give you,
all the love you need,
I can see you a thousand times w/o
no one knowing anything,
because no one will call on me
for explanations nor permisions.
Because only I, I can secure,
all the love that you need;
I know perfectly
what you want if you call me;
waht a pity if such a beautiful thing so should end..
(google needed help. google trasnlation sucks)
"What is she doing out of bed at 8am?"
Woke up at 5.
Even with my help.. the song is more subtle, more romantic.
its really asking the would be lover to cheat.. to follow her hart.
Waht if Alhouse is asked to choose.. btween us (blog) and some guy..
We ask for so little in comparison .. (I know we could never give as much as she gives us but)... is it true that giving is better than receiving?
Althouse teaches religion.. she ought to know ;)
Hi professor.. I'm here celetrating you ... I believe I have your permission ;)
In truth.. this is way better than pretending to talk to a stranger in a bar..
A stranger taht will most of the time not have my best interest at hart. I know waht I'm talking about.
On the one hand (thinking the way the professor might) it's unfair for me to talk to the proffessor directly in my drunkard state.
but I just want to assure her everything in A OK tip top shape.
I have to show at a party later... I'm just getting myself in the mood ;)
No.. seriously profe.. I've enjoyed coming here and shall not do anything that would jepordise that...
I'm in all sorts of programs AA'S and waht not. They got me in Hoboken's Giants Steps.
I'm doing it because it because.. I broke my fathers hart when he had to go and pick me up when I got arrested.
In NJ when you get arrested for that someone (sober) must come and get you..
I had to call my father... and I cried all the way to my apartment.
My father blamed himself.. for waht we have been put thru.
And no matter how much we understand and everybody undertands the separation that we endured .. coming in legally.. he still says that maybe we should not have separeated.
that the separation hurt me. of course it did but how could i tell my father that. he has allways done waht he thought waht was best for us.
there is enough gilt around my folks to become jews... jews for jesus..
hey wahtever happened to jews for jesus?
OMG ..This is a great Julio song..
Jurame..
In Italian, but it was recorded in Spanish originally.
ay dios mio
basta lem basta
muy borracho
since midafternoon
Aw, Lem. It was sweet of you to write me a poem. Thanks. Now, don't drink too much. Jesus loves you and so do I. Hugs!
and oh such a maxine vibe from
penny above which was obviously
not lost on our dear professor
interesting how this will shake
out nous verrons
Blogging cockroach?
Sure I hung around here in the wings for some time before I commented. But is there any way I can be brought up to speed about Maxine? She was before my time, yet apparently "historical" for you at least.
To Ann...I TOO wake up at 5am, or thereabouts. I do the very natural pee thing and then go back to sleep, and if I'm lucky, I dream yet again.
If rumors can be trusted here, (OK big "if"), but it seemed to me at least, that your fanboys were rooting for your routing.
Shamefully, I fell into fanboy "groupthink".
Can you ever forgive me?
For Lem:
"All will be well, and all will be well, and all manner of things will be well."
Or deep.

Thanks profe. I was at your other post, sorry i mist you.
"All will be well, and all will be well, and all manner of things will be well."
Spoken like the mother of a very young child.. a very lucky young child.
thanks Freeman, a little pat in back like that and I'm as good as new.
So, blogging cockroach?
Tell me more about Maxine.
IMHO, anyway, FWIW & so it goes, LOL (to be clear).
; )
"Palladian, how much would it cost to pay you to come here and organize my kitchen?"
Oh, I doubt you'd want me to do that. My 'organization' is very personal and is generally 'organized chaos', undecipherable and unknowable to anyone but me :)
Doesn't get more perfect than that, Palladian, after all--and XXOO, darn it!
Spoken like the mother of a very young child..
Or a Catholic mystic (Julian of Norwich.)
(That last comment of mine was not sarcastic.
For that matter, neither were the previous two.)
Thanks for the google links about Maxine, but frankly, I prefer the short form on this topic.
Anyone I can trust here to give me that?
Hey, thanks for the advice on the kettles, palladian and all.
Arty, quirky, quality and well-made, is that too much to ask for? In kettles and otherwise?
That's a really cool tea kettle! Breakfast looks good too. This morning I didn't actually have breakfast. :( I woke up late and had to run.
