"Welcome to Wisconsin"... a quiz.

Reading a menu the other day, I expressed surprised at the existence of a particular item. The server responded, "Welcome to Wisconsin."

What was the item?

AND THE ANSWER IS: Cheese and burger soup.

To be clear, I was surprised that this item existed at all, not that it managed to appear on a menu in Wisconsin. "Welcome to Wisconsin" was the server's attempt to explain that such a thing had been concocted. I was assured of its goodness.

Not really that "odd". My grandma used to make avocado (aguacate) ice cream from scratch by hand.

Cheese, stuffed with cheese, with a crunchy cheese coating, served in a three-cheese sauce. With several spicy cheese dipping sauces on the side. And cheese bread.

It was a side dish served with the daily special - cheese plate with braunschwieger.

Excellent with a glass of Cheddar Porter from Capital Brewing Company.

It was probably listed in the 'no added sugar' section of the menu.

TerriW ayon kay ...

Deep fried cheese curds are actually very good ... though I suspect each one will take a good hour or so off of your life.

As a sort-of aside, one time when my husband and I lived in Texas, we drove by a Culvers (a Wisconsin-based chain -- was surprised to see one in Texas!). He looked up at the sign where they advertise the day's special and asked, "What the heck is Walleye?"

Being a Cheddarhead myself, I never considered Walleye exotic.

former law student ayon kay ...

Broasted chicken is only a Wisconsin thing?

BC was common in the Chicagoland of my youth -- our pizza delivery joint sold it.

What's distinctly Wisconsin (AFAIK) is the Supper Club. Wisconsin shares with Minnesota the concept of the Parking Ramp.

Original Mike ayon kay ...

We caught walleye last weekend when we were canoe camping. Yum, yum, yum.

Original Mike ayon kay ...

Trooper, do you have broasted chicken in NY?

Trooper York ayon kay ...

I don't think so. But we do have rosietirrie (sic) chicken. I remember there was this old school deli on Pierpont St. that served the Court house area on Court St. Anyway they had this big roaster oven with a glass case that they broiled whole chickens on a spit. I swear that the same chicken was in that thing for a solid year.

Broasted mean's what exactly?

Trooper York ayon kay ...

The was a girl in my eight grade class that had the Walleye. It was a shame because she was kinda cute otherwise. But I hear they have an operation for that now.

Broasted = breaded and deep fried in a pressure cooker. Think of a deep fryer that is constructed with a vault-like top to prevent explosions.

She was lucky. The bullhead was a far more difficult condition to treat.

Wow, that sounds tasty.

Maybe with cole slaw and pickles and a few ice cold beers.

Ice cream sandwich for desert.

The one food I can't get anywhere but Wisconsin is the Ponza Rotta Pizza (like a calzone, but deep fried instead of baked). To my knowledge, they only come from Jimmy' Grotto in Waukesha.

As someone who grew up in Wisconsin, the proper answer here should probably combine things that are wisconsin. Hunting, sausage, cheese...

Which is why I think it is venison bratwurst with cheese.

Of course the "scrambler" at Mickey's Dairy Bar in Madison probably isn't found anywhere else either (an omlete scrambled with fried potatoes topped with cheese and gravy)
