An L.A. meetup?
I'll be blogging from L.A. soon, and as discussed here — where you gave me so many good tips — I may do a meetup with blog readers. If you think you might come, email me at my gmail address (annalthouse) so I can see if the numbers are there and, if it's going to happen, give you the time and place.

so what are your plans overall?
5 days in the UCLA Law Library reading Spanish Land Grants, or the Constituiton of the Bear Republic?
It could never be as good as the super exclusive Brooklyn meet-up.
LA = Lower Alabama. So the thing could be held in New Orleans.
Lower Alabama is Pensacola Florida
South Western Mississippi is New Orleans
Fine, YOU hang out in Pensacola.
In the 'patter' portion of one of James Brown's funkier songs (Escape-ism, the Complete Take, all 19 glorious minutes of it), there's a discussion of where the band members are from, here's the pertinent portion
J.B.: Where’re you from, Albert?
Albert: Georgia.
J.B.: What part, man? Georgia’s got a big—. What?
Albert: Macon, Georgia.
J.B.: Macon. Don’t say it so low, bro. You make me think you don’t want the people to hear you or something. … Fred, where’re you from?
Fred Wesley: L.A.!
Band: Uh oh! Uh oh! [Laughter.]
Unknown: Ask him where he started from!
Fred: Lower Alabama!
J.B.: What you say?
Fred: Lower Alabama.
J.B.: Lower Alabama? Alright. … Yeah, alright. Alright, alright. Remind me about ‘Lost’ Angeles. … Where’re you from, uh…. You know I keep forgetting this cat’s name? What your name is, man?
Pulled that from this post where someone went to the trouble of transcribing the whole thing, now that's why the internets is great.
Lots of blacks from the South settled in the Los Angeles area (like my grandparents). So plenty of folks like Fred Wesley, who started out in Lower Alabama, but ended up in Los Angeles for a time.
(his Wiki incorrectly identifies him as being from Columbus, Georgia, rather than Mobile, Alabama, have to assume his own myspace page is the accurate one)
Notice Fred just played a James Brown tribute in Munich, wonder if he stopped by Berlin to catch The Obama's speech?
One more JB related comment, the entire 19 minute version of Escape-ism needs to be in Rock Band 2.
That'd be epic.
(just have to figure out a way to penalize a vocalist if he/she enunciates too clearly)

XWL, I like reading Walter Mosley in part because he incorporates that Southern connection in the lives of his Los Angeles characters, including Easy Rawlins.
LA Meetup?
I can't make it, but John Edwards would like to stop by.
Where will you be at, say, 2:00 AM?
Enquiring minds want to know.
David, LOL... and skeeving.
Be sure to post pictures of the Star Wars bar of regulars who show up. Maxine better be there.
I'll bet Maxine looks like Fred Schneider of the B-52s.
