It may not be the bend, ricpic, so much as the darkness in the foreground contrasting with the sudden brightness in the back. It gives an impression of looking past the proscenium on to a stage.

The slight bend in the fish eye photos has a 3-D effect for some reason. Maybe someone with a scientific bent could explain why?
